Cognac for the Connoisseur in Your life

Gifts for men are always difficult but if your man loves Cognac Brandy ...

Ok, you're looking for a gift for a Cognac-lover and I'm guessing that might be for the man in your life - your partner, husband, father or son. Not that the love of Cognac is just for men - I adore a little nip after a wonderful meal, and it is medicinal you know. Oh yes, excellent for the old digestive system :)

Never-the-less, the Cognac Connoisseur, the one that makes the imbibing of this fine spirit into an art form, might well be male rather than female. The clue is in the very word Connoisseur which comes from the old French word conoisseor "a judge, one well-versed," which in turn comes from conoistre, from L. cognoscere "to know," and it's masculine. Men take a pride in their knowledge and enjoyment of fine spirits and Cognac, one of the finest of brandies, is well worth the devotion.

I've brought together a gift guide for brandy lovers and lovers of cognac. Doesn't this make a Cognac gift the perfect gift for the connoisseur in your life?

Sadly, the brandy is not included - come to Cognac for that - but what is included in this gift set is a mouth-blow over-sized snifter (no lead), a chrome stand, a candle, and glass holder. The glass snifter (I think the word 'balloon' is slightly nicer) is dishwasher safe. The chrome stand should be wiped clean with a damp cloth.

Measures: Snifter - 6"H, 25 oz.; Stand - 7"H

Cognac Glasses

Two Beautiful Final Touch Relax Cognac Glasses - With special peaked centre

I love the design of these glasses - something just a little bit different. Instead of a stem there are little peaks of glass hold the bowl at a jaunty angle. Fun!

I love it when new design meets time-honoured tradition.

Vintage Cognac Posters

Cognac Template by Alphonse Mucha

My personal favourite

As a teenager (many moons ago) I had Mucha posters on my bedroom wall. I still love them!

Here is a tiny bit of information about the artist: Alfons Maria Mucha was born 24 July 1860 - 14 July 1939. He is a wold famous Czech Art Nouveau painter and decorative artist best known for his distinct Art Nouveau style. He produced many paintings, illustrations, advertisements, postcards, and designs.

A Vacation or Break in Cognac

What is it That Makes Cognac Cognac ...

And not just brandy?

To merit the name Cognac, the brandy must do more than just come from the town of Cognac or the Cognac region of France.

The name Cognac is an Appellation d'origine contrôlée, and it must be produced to meet certain legal requirements: it must be made from specific grapes ( Ugni Blanc, Folle Blanche, Colombard, Folignan, Jurançon blanc, Meslier St-François (also called Blanc Ramé), Sélect, Montils or Sémillon. Ugni Blanc, known locally as Saint-Emilion, is the predominant variety.

The brandy must also be twice distilled in copper pot stills and aged at least two years in French oak barrels (wood which comes from the Limousin or Tronçais).

The oak comes from the woodlands around Les Trois Chenes (which means The Three Oaks) - just one of our claims to fame!

Visit the Chateau of Baron Otar - Take a tour and buy your Cognac here at bargain prices

I made the trip to Cognac in South West France and took this tour of the Chateau of Baron Otar and I can tell you that it was a wonderful experience. You absolutely don't have to be a drinker or lover of Cognac or brandy to enjoy this tour. It is a feast for the intellect and the senses. You'll love this if you're an artist (like me), an historian, a Francophile, a lover of historic building or simply someone who is interested in how things are made. It's a great educational outing for kids and everyone will love the fabulous chateau and the spooky caves with their stocks of huge, oak barrels.

Take a Vacation in Cognac and See Cognac Being Made - What to do and where to stay

Why not take a once-in-a-lifetime holiday break in the French city of Cognac? You can visit so many of the top Cognac producers and see the French brandy being made. Take a tour of Hennessey, Remy Martel, Baron Otar and many more famous names. Go to Limousin and see the oak forrests which produce the cognac barrels, do a little shopping for the world-famous Limoges porcelain and taste some world-famous Limousin beefin top-nothc restaurants at super, non-rip-off prices.

Cognac Books

Cognac by Axel Behrendt, Bibiana Behrendt

Still Need More Choice of Cognac Gifts?

Town of Cognac Gifts - And to Cognac Region

Cognac itself is a beautiful town build from the soft, blond stone of the Charente. It's situated on the River Charente and at this point the river runs wide and magnificently. If you take a tour of the Hennessy chateau, then you begin with a boat trip down the river.

You'll love the typically French narrow and ancient streets, the lively cafes, the ancient walls, magnificent castles, beautiful churches and all the wonderful vineyards of the area.

@aesta1: Thanks for dropping by aesta1. I love Armagnac too. I have never visited the producers though, have you? Cognac is not too far for us to go so it was nice to see it being made.

In our family, there's a preference for Armagnac but we also love Cognac from this area.
