I deal with little kids a lot as I help out babysitting (well kid sitting more than babysitting) help out with kids workshop so I think I have quite an eye (and ear) to know what the little darlings want - and when we remove all the real unicorns and ponies which most of us don't have a place to accommodate or expensive fancy gadgets that most of us think are not exactly the best for a 5 year old (yes, some are asking for iPads) we are left with this list.

Top 3 Birthday Gifts and Toys for 5 Year Old Girls for 2013

My personal selection

These is my personal pick of what are some of the best and most asked for toys and gadgets in the 2013. Monster High dolls are all the rage and girls love them. The age recommendation for these fabulous dolls varies from store to store some say they are good for 5 years and up, some recommend 4 and up while some 8 and up. Should you get one? Well most of the 5 years old I know already play with Barbie Dolls or Monster High dolls and all love them.

My second pick is the Inno Tab. We live in a computer age and I think that we should encourage the use of digital devices to some extent with children. Inno Tab is perfect for this.

Last but not list and this is really personal - the new Furby. I wanted one when I was a kid but they were really, really expensive. It's a childhood dream of mine to have this furry creature and I see that the new release is already causing a lot of buzz.

Girls are all about dolls - pretend play, dress up games, making new dresses by themselves... There are a lot of great dolls that are perfect for a 5 year old, browse though some of the most popular dolls at the moment and surprise your girl.

Melissa and Dough

Melissa & Doug standard Mine to Love Brianna 12-Inch Soft Body Baby Doll with Hair and Outfit
Melissa & Doug standard Mine to Love Brianna 12-Inch Soft Body Baby Doll with Hair and Outfit

Melissa & Dough are extremely popular with girls. At 5 the baby dolls (and baby like dolls as you won't find a lot of babies with such a great hair do in real life) are still popular.

I like this one the most as I always though the realistic baby dolls are a bit too much for young girl. I remember I wasn't to impressed with them while this cutie would have me jumping up and down.

Lalaloopsy Dolls - Sew Cute!

I will be honest I like Monster High a lot (I am all for freaky) but I also love Lalaloopsy. These are Sew Cute! I really like the concept behind the doll and the girls love Lalaloopsy too. I also noticed parents generally prefer Lalaloopsy to Monster High.

Merida Doll

Have you seen Brave? If you or your kids haven't I strongly recommend it. It's not often we get a brave female heroine star in a movie. The new Disney's princess is here!

The more kids have them the more fun as these are quite skilled with interacting with each other.

Lets Get Cooking!

All that plastic food looks yummy!

Either by pretend toy kitchen set or by cooking for real with easy cook sets. I had a super small kitchen set when I was young. I remember it had a oven that could open and close and a small cupboard. We would be cooking all kinds of things. Well mostly that one plastic toy chicken that was a perfect fit for the oven. Later on my childhood friend got a life size (well kid life size) toy kitchen and that's when things really started cooking. We would spend days in the kitchen cooking, baking and frying all kinds of fake foods (we would even make the food out of cardboard we then colored) and always argued who would do the dishes (we actually washed them after use imagine that).

I might prefer the pink kitchen but this way the boys will be happy to help in the kitchen (best to teach them early eh?). I really like the amount of appliances and shelves this kitchen has. It will have the little ones engaged for months.

Umagine Cool Baker Cake Pop Maker
Umagine Cool Baker Cake Pop Maker

This is one of the most asked for gifts amongst girls. But.... There is a but. You can only use the batter mix that comes with the kit (you can get refills though). I imagine there must be a way to make your own batter but I don't know how. That said this is still a great item. Why? It will make cake pops without baking which makes it safe for kids to use by themselves. And that's something kids appreciate.
