Body Parts Cupcakes - Make your own spooky toppers!

Updated on August 21, 2013

Let's make a batch of cupcakes... With a few body parts!

Are you looking forward to Halloween? I know I am! The costumes, the parties, the fun and most importantly the cupcakes! Halloween is perfect for letting your imagination go wild and creating stunningly gruesome mouth watering masterpieces. I've already started making mine, well they won't wait till Halloween but I think it's better to give an idea a test run before you actually need it and this one, well it turned out great, even better than expected!

I do like fondant as it allows for making great cake (and cupcake decorations) but I never really liked the taste of it to be honest so I was thinking what I could use to substitute it and it hit me - fruit caramels / fruit chews! They were easy to work with and they kept the shape so if you will be making body part cupcakes (and I do hope my tutorials will inspire you to make them) you can use them (or just stick with fondant).

Photos on this page are taken by me unless stated otherwise.

Making the hands for the cupcakes

You will need one fruit caramel/ fruit chews for one hand. Roll the caramel/ fruit chews between your hand so it gets the shape of a tube.

Flatten half of the tube by pressing the knife (or anything else) on it.

Cut the flat part so you get 5 little strips (aka fingers)

Start shaping the fingers with your fingers, squeezing and gently rolling each of them. You will see it isn't hard the shape of the fingers will come out almost automatically. You can also shape up the hand part a bit. If the fingers stick to each other help yourself with a toothpick.

If you are aiming for a male hand you are done but if you want your body parts to belong to a woman be sure to use Wilton edible markers to make the nail polish.

Eeew severed hands!

You can even get the sugar free ones for your guilt free cupcakes!

Now let's make the head

Roll the fruity caramel / chews into a ball and push it down onto your working surface so you'll get an face resembling oval shape.

A few super easy sculpting moves will give your candy a basic face shape. Use a table knife and press it as shown on 2, 3 and 4th picture - this way you will be getting a slightly elevated nose and arches for eyebrows.

Some doodling with Wilton markers will bring your face to life... Well to death as this head has lost it's body!

Legs are really fun! You make them by slightly rolling the caramel so it looses it's square shape and bend it in half. Flatten one half with a knife just a little and shape it a bit with your hands to get the shape of the foot. With a knife (or toothpick) gently make the toes.

Now to the fun part - color the upper part of the leg with red edible marker and as the caramel has a bit of shine it will look like fresh blood all the time, well at least until someone eats it.

Delicious and spookalicious

I made basic chocolate cupcakes (I did forgot to add the baking powder - oops so they didn't rise oh my) but you can make whichever flavour you want.

I do have a recommendation for the frosting though, make it dark - I made it using butter and cocoa powder with a little vanilla extract. When I frosted them I covered them with cocoa powder so they look like dirt. All you have to do now is stick your body parts onto the cupcakes (they will stand by themselves, no picks needed).

Just waiting for a cupcake lover (or a cannibal) to snatch them!

Comments - Will you be making these? Other ones? I would love to hear from you!

That was pretty clever, making those body parts for halloween cupcakes, never mind about the baking powder it wouldn't be the first time thats happen to a cook.

They look good enough to eat and I am sure it would be the decoration on them that the kids would be looking forward to eating anyway.
