Books and rpg games inspired by world of the Lord of the Rings.
Lord of the rings mother of all fantasy books and dungeon and dragon games.
The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings are magic books. Not only in the sense that you can find magical places and objects of power in the book. No the books themselves are magic. They inspired countless artists to make there work. After J.R.R. Tolkien wrote The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings a whole new genre in literature was created. The Fantasy world Narnia by C. S. Lewis came close and more followed.
Films started to emerge as well and later a whole game industry was invented based upon the fantasy genre. So what made The Hobbit so special ? Why do millions of people read The Lord of The Rings over and over again? And why are Role Playing games so popular ?
The why questions are not easy to answer, fact is though that the fantasy genre developed and new writers appeared on the horizon. With George R.R. Martin as the most famous fantasy author of the moment , creator of the successful series A Song of Ice and Fire and it's adoption for the television under the name Game of Thrones. The books of George R.R. Martin are in my opinion as good as The Lord of The Rings, it's fresh, inspiring and creates a complete new world.
Brings me to a second point of why the books of Tolkien are so poular. The maps, the maps are a great invention and nowadays, no fantasy book can do without a good drawn map. If you want to write a good fantasy book, start with creating a map is my advise. Maps are dreamcatchers, I always start to dream away when I'm looking at maps. Imagining how the people would live there lives on that far away village by the sea.

An intruiguing series by a master of fantasy writing. Well known for finishing the Wheel of Time series. But his Mistborn trilogy is amazing. His original concepts of magic and the plots of the book are thrilling. A real page turner.
New Link List
A dark fantasy trilogy with great and interesting characters. A breathtaking story. I think that the first and the third book are the best.
Tolkien and RPG, the game under the mountain where the goblins live. - The places in the Lord of the Rings and Role Playing Games
A classic already, It's almost written as would it be a RPG game. taverns, lute players, magical forests, kingdoms in dispute and a school of magic. (even a dragon comes along!!!)
Mountains and fantasy novels
If you look at the books of J.R.R. Tolkien a bit more closely you'll see that all the ingredients used in Role playing Games (RPG) and fantasy novels are there. Dungeons and dragons isn't an idle name. In both books the protagonist, Bilbo in the Hobbit and Frodo in The Lord of the Rings spent there time for quite a while inside the mountains.
Bilbo is playing a riddle game with Gollum and Frodo and his company are fighting orcs and a Balrog (a fire beast from the pits of hell...) The element of going underground is a classic one in fantasy books and RPG games. It is the place to be if you want to do some orc fighting. Although orcs weren't mentioned in the book The Hobbit yet. Bilbo was escaping from the goblins.
Dragons can be found in the mountains too, but just like in the Hobbit, the dragon appears on the end. In fantasy books dragons do have different characteristics. One thing thay do have in common though is that the are old, what do I say ? No they are ancient, dragons don't die easily and have a wisdom that's forgotten by most men, even by wizards. The wizardry of dragons is special.
Dragon Age - a grand epic adventure in RPG style, tolkien worthy. - One of the best Role Playing Games around
The Mirkwood in the Hobbit and Lothlorien in the Lord of the Rings. - The woods are a place for magic, a place for nature in its purest form.
The woods as a setting for fantasy books
The woods, it's another classic place that often returns in fantasy books and Role Playing Games. It is the place where the elves and the dryads lives. The living trees and the man of the forest lives. In many fantasy books there is a hole tree.
In the Lord of the Rings you have the White Tree of Gondor , in The Game of Thrones there is the Heart Tree and in The Name of the Wind you've got the Cthaeh who lives in a tree in the realm of the Fae. And of course we all know the ent of the Lord of the Rings movies.
In many role playing games the woods are one of the places where magical things happen, the magic of nature is a different kind of magic than the wizards use. Tom Bombadil, a character of The Lord of the Rings has a special kind of magic. He can wear the ring but he won't be invisible. The ring has no power over him, nobody has. He is one with nature, a personification of nature together with his Goldberry. Yes the movies skipped a lot, if you haven't read the book the Lord of the Rings yet and only seen the movie, you have not experienced it in it's fullest.
The Witcher 2 - a true game in the fantasy genre. - one of the best RPG around.
The ring and the sword , two magical objects in fantasy books
The ring the sword and the dragon
Almost all fantasy books and movies have there own magical objects. As in the Hobbit, it's the magical ring that in the end plays an important part in the desolation of Smaug the dragon living in the Lonely Mountain. The same ring will be the protagonista in The Lord of the Rings.
Beside the one ring made by Sauron, the sword that was broken, Aragorn's sword Andaril plays an important role. In another fantasy classic The wheel of times series by Robert Jordan you have other items as well. A dagger full of foul spirits, a heron mark sword and the Horn of Valere.
In Role Playing Games like Neverwinterland or Skyrim you can find loads of magical items. It's actually the key thing in many RPG games. magical wands, swords, rings, boots, gloves, robes, you name it. And of course musical instruments. Music is a form of magic too, even in the real world ;-)
