Updated on September 8, 2015

Homemade Gift Baskets Make Unique Gift Ideas for Families and Kids!

Want to make a great book lover gift? Book gift baskets can be used for many different things. Whether you're an author looking to promote your new book, an avid reader looking for fun gifts to give, or a fundraising organizer looking for a great raffle prize idea, homemade book gift baskets will suit your needs perfectly.

The first step is to choose your book. There are tons of classic books that make for great gift basket filling. Choose your favorite book from your childhood. Or, choose a book that's a current bestseller. Your options are limitless! Just make sure that you choose a book that you can find a variety of related items for to fill your basket.

After that, get a basket. Flea markets, thrift shops, and online stores are all good choices. Then it's just a matter of finding goodies to fill out your container.

If you're looking for more ideas, you might be interested in Book Gifts for Kids.

Read on to find great suggestions for filling book gift baskets!

Children's Book Lover Gift Basket Ideas

Example: White Fang Gift Basket - It's Easy to Make a Fun and Unique Gift!

When filling a gift basket, be imaginative! The best part about receiving a gift basket is pulling out and admiring item after item. It's like a whole bunch of gifts packed into one! The thrill is even greater when you don't know what to expect next, when the gift-giver has put his or her unique touch on the gift basket. Homemade food and gifts, unique toys, related books, funny poems and random objects are all creative touches you can add to your book-themed gift basket.

The classic tale of how a wolf-dog learns to overcome a past full of loss and pain to find true love and companionship. The setting in the cold, harsh, north, the memorable characters, and the thrilling plot all make great themes for concocting your gift basket.

Filling the White Fang Book Gift Basket - Toy Wolves, Mugs, and More!

Here are a few ideas for things to put in your White Fang themed gift basket. Feel free to come up with additional items! I think that some mittens, homemade cookies, and perhaps a cute dog sled ornament would really round out this present.

Looking for baskets? Click here to go to the Baskets section further down the page. Thrift and craft stores are also a good basket source.

To fill the basket, you'll want to include:

  • A copy of the book (possibly a nice hardcover or illustrated version)
  • A stuffed wolf
  • themed bookmarks or other themed items
  • a nice scarf
  • mug, coffee, and cocoa to keep your recipient warm through the chilly scenes!

Including stuffed version of animal book characters is a great touch.

You can also find other items that feature the animals in question.

A great themed travel mug is perfect for reading in bed without spilling on the pages!

Themed Bookmarks

A themed bookmark is a great addition to a book basket. Scope out your local bookstore for a great selection!

The Secret Garden Gift Basket - A Book About Gardening, Life, and Growth

This is one of my favorite childhood books. I think the story of how Mary Lennox, a girl who escapes certain death due to cholera to be invigorated and reawakened by a secret garden in the English moors is uplifting. The garden theme makes it an especially good book to build a gift basket around.

To make this gift basket, you'll want to include:

  • A copy of the book, of course!
  • Gardening tools - real ones if the recipient is a budding horticulturist, or toy ones if your recipient only has an imaginary garden to work with
  • a potted plant
  • stuffed birds or other countryside animals - the Secret Garden is known for its fauna as well as its flora!
  • old-fashioned keys, or key-themed jewelry

The Key to the Garden

Mary finds a key that lets her in to the garden. Thrift stores and garage sales are the perfect place to find old-fashioned keys for your book basket.

Radio Flyer Kid's Wheelbarrow
Radio Flyer Kid's Wheelbarrow

Use this wheelbarrow as the "basket" to put the other items in!

Definitely consider thinking outside the "basket" part of "gift basket!" Anything from a wheelbarrow to a big planter pot to a watering can can make your thoughtful surprise even more special and unique.

Teenager Book Lover Gift Basket Ideas

Example: Harry Potter Book Basket - Wizards and Witches

Another gift basket tip: be thrifty! There's nothing wrong with saving money when constructing your book-themed gift basket. Thrift and second-hand stores are the perfect place to search for baskets, gently used books, toys, and accessories such as scarves and jewelry. It's not only good for you wallet, but good for the planet as well! Also think about buying items in bulk, and making items by hand if you're a crafty person. And don't forget, a smaller basket is easier to fill than a larger one!

Okay, so in order to give this in the gift, you have to find someone who doesn't currently own the Harry Potter series. Alternately, if you know someone who is a huge Harry Potter fan, you can create the basket without books, or find related books that might interest them that they probably don't own yet.

Some books are hard to find a theme for. In that case, pick general items that any reader would love! Book lamps, snuggly blankets, and the perfect mug for a warm beverage to enjoy while lost in fictional worlds are all good choices.

Books are great gifts, and it is indeed a better idea to give a book basket. You can play around with the stuff that you can put in the basket. I am sure kids would love to get one!

Putting together your own gift basket would be a wonderful way to express your creativity. I love your book-theme ideas.

Too much work! I'd rather buy a gift basket already put together.

What a clever idea -- I love your gift basket ideas. A gift basket would be such a versatile gift idea because it would be different for every type of theme you chose. In the case of books, everything could revolve around the Title of the book, as you showed in your 'White Fang' example. The possibilities are endless. Thanks ... I'll never have a problem deciding on a gift again. :)

What a wonderful gifting idea, this would be so fun to do! I like the pet gift idea to, we always gave our pets gifts. The one thing to be careful of is the doggy jerky, one year my sister opened the can and took a bite as we all watched and then laughed. She has a good sense of humor and laughed to after spitting it out and getting a drink. Beautifully done. This would also be a great idea for other occasions!

I have made many baskets in the past, I store up on end-of-season sale items (JMaxx is one of the best) and use them in the baskets. When I make a book basket, I usually include a coffee or tea cup, a small candle and a book marker..you can add so many little things to make it personal...Children's baskets are the most fun...I find many books for sale at discount book stores and the library, or even the thrift stores.

That's a good idea, for several reasons. It can be a good idea for children to extend books, so I really like the idea of putting together books with play items. I like how you emphasized that the things don't all have to be new.
