Bug Birthday Party Ideas

Updated on April 27, 2015

Getting Buggy With It

At times, children can certainly remind you of bugs; they are busy as bees, they seem to have eight arms when they get into everything from your kitchen cabinets to your cellphone; and they are always flittering from activity to activity like a beautiful butterfly. A bug themed birthday party is an excellent idea for your little buggy. Cute, bright, and fun, no one will be objecting to the adorable insects at this gathering.

And if you have an open mind, you could even extend this later into a bugs baby shower theme!

Bug Party Invitations

Spread Like Ants

The best part of having a bug birthday party is that there are endless ways to incorporate your theme into the invitations, decorations, activities, and food. Start with the invitations. As always, you can find pre-made invitations at any party store, and because bugs are a common theme, you are sure to find a good selection. You can also make your own. Stop by a discount or dollar store and pick up a bag of small plastic bugs. Use your computer to print a message like the following (found on on the desired number of cards:

I'm turning (age).

Let's celebrate at my bug birthday party!

Creep by on (date).

Infestation time (time).

Buzzz us at (phone number).

Glue a few bugs on, put a few more in the envelope, and mail them off to your child's buggy friends.

Decorating Your Nest

Get Creative!

Decorations are easy and fun. Black and yellow streamers and balloons are perfect for the bee-loving kids, while red and black are great for those who like ladybugs.

Both of these bugs, incidentally, are easy to make using balloons.

All a red balloon needs, for instance, is some black spots drawn on with a Sharpie and a friendly face. A yellow balloon can be decorated with black stripes.

Make a Pinata Hive

Cheap & Easy

Make your own beehive piñata out of paper mache. Make sure you have plenty of newspaper strips and your paper mache mixture. You can actually buy this pre-made, but most craftsters make it themselves using a mixture of regular white paste and water. Layer the strips of newspaper on the balloon until you have the hive shaped the way you want it.

Let it dry for several days and then paint little bees on it with craft paints. You can pop the balloon and make a small hole for candy or birthday favors. Your childs guests will destroy your creation with glee.

Have Some Fun!

A fun activity for the party is to have the kids make their own creepy crawly bugs. Stock up on pipe cleaners, pompoms, wiggly eyes, felt, and other fun craft supplies and let their imaginations go. You could have a prize or special party favor for the craziest, sweetest, or scariest bugs.

Another fun game is the caterpillar race. You'll need a few old sleeping bags. Divide the children into two teams and have the first racer from each time get into the sleeping bag so he's lying on his stomach. The goal is to race across the floor without touching the floor with their hands, arms, or head. You can also play a game like Elefun, in which the guests can catch "butterflies."

Funky Foods

Creepy Eating

Food is the most fun part of a bug birthday party. Try gummy worms and candy bugs. Let the kids make Critter Mix with trail mix fixings or make ants on a log with celery and peanut butter (check for allergies) and raisins or chocolate chips. You can also prepare some sugar cookies and allow them to make decorated cookies in the shapes of bugs!

For your piece de resistance, try Dirt Cake. This fun "cake" doesn't require any cooking and is guaranteed to be a crowd-pleaser with kids and adults alike. With an easy recipe like this, Dirt Cake is sure to be the most fun cake you've ever made.

Your child will love a bug themed party - and you'll enjoy it, too.

Love it! Wish I could have read this BEFORE our bug party. ; ) One more neat thing- at Orchard Supply Hardware, OSH, I found a small bucket of live ladybugs in their fridge back by the fertilizer. They keep for a week. We set them loose with the kids for a cheap memorable moment. Maybe we got rid of a couple of aphids too...
