Who Was Santa Claus?

St. Nicholas was a real person

Saint Nicholas was a fourth century Christian bishop who was born in what is modern-day Turkey and was well-known for helping the poor. After his death, tales of his generous nature continued to spread.

Dutch settlers brought legends of St. Nick's kindness and generosity to America. They called him Sinterklass, a Dutch nickname for Sint Nikolaas, and this later changed into Santa Claus.

The saint's popularity was cemented in modern American culture by two people - Clement C. Moore, who wrote "The Night Before Christmas" and cartoonist Thomas Nast, whose illustrations of St. Nick in "Harper's Weekly" created the image of a fat, bearded man that we know today. Nash also invented the idea of a toy shop at the North Pole and Santa's elves.

St. Nick's legend continued to grow from there, and today "Santa Claus" is known by children all over the world.

The real Saint Nicholas lived during the 4th century and had a reputation for secret gift giving.

Santa Claus is Coming to Town - Arthur Christmas version by Justin Bieber

"With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick."
