Christmas Gift Ideas for Teen Girls

Updated on March 9, 2014

Think Like a Teen

There is probably no one on your gift list as difficult to shop for as teenagers. What do they like? Do you know? Do they know? Clothes are dangerous; wrong size, wrong style, wrong decade. Games are iffy; who plays board games? I’m too old and way too cool for board games. What’s a parent, friend, or family member to do?

Well, start here for some Christmas gift ideas for teen girls, and then hit the stores with more confidence.

Put Your Best Face Forward

If the teen girl in your life likes to wear makeup, help keep her supplied. Opt for a natural mineral makeup, which looks and feels light and won’t make your 15-year-old look 25. Include a few different eye shadows, eye liner, or mascara. Try a tinted lip balm or a few bottles of fun nail polish.

If you are not quite sure what type of makeup your teen would like most, you can let her get it herself. A gift card to a drug store or department store will enable her to get what she wants – and have a fun day of shopping (maybe even with you!). Another idea is to get some beauty basics like high-quality cosmetic brushes or skin care products. The Dove SkinVitalizer Facial Cleansing Massager, for instance, removes makeup and residue and helps keep young skin looking young.

Another fun idea for a teen gift is a variety of nail polishes. Forget about standard pink and red. Find colors that dazzle, including orange, lime green, fuchsia, yellow, blue, black, and more. OPI has a great line of “shattered” polishes. You apply a coat of regular OPI nail lacquer and then a coat of the special Shatter lacquer. A pattern emerges; everyone will wonder how she did her nails, and she’ll have you to thank. It’s fun to be girly now and then!

Get Funky

Jewelry and accessories are always fun. Does your teen have pierced ears? Does she wear bracelets or necklaces? Is she into hair clips? When buying jewelry for a teen girl, it is all about style. Go to Etsy and take a look at the handmade pieces. This leather bracelet, for instance, will cost you less than $10 and has just the right amount of funk and fun. Engraved jewelry is also a neat way to make a traditional piece more unique!

Gift Ideas for Teen Girls

Think Globally

If you have a budding trendsetter on your hands, give her something unique, something that 500 other kids at her school won’t already have. You can find bags made from recycled feed bags or “upcycled” rice bags at eBay. Why not a hand-embroidered wool belt or hair clips made from gourds? Not only will she be a standout in terms of fashion, she’ll have eco- and socially-friendly products.

Unless she’s told you a specific title, buying books can be iffy – but not e-books. Thanks to Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other electronic readers, we can download books in just seconds. Let her choose her own and give her a gift card to pay for them. This way, she can get just what she wants, and you don’t have to worry about getting her something she’s already read or will never read.

And if she doesn’t have an e-reader? That’s a perfect gift!

Getting in Shape

For teens who like to exercise, help them get into prime shape with new ear buds, an iTunes card for motivational music, a reusable water bottle, a Pilates/yoga mat and workout video, Zumba video, an exercise ball, a set of resistance bands, a medicine ball, an armband for their specific mp3 player or phone, or even just a relaxation gift basket.

A gift card to a store that sells workout equipment, sneakers and shoes, or clothes may also be a nice touch for the active teen girl.

If you are really stuck, go with a gift card. Teen girls are not apt to whine because it is impersonal; they are likely to be glad to get to choose their own clothing, books, jewelry, or other items.

Great tips - I have a preteen niece with no idea what to get her! I think an ebook or certificate for an ebook would be great, she loves her Kindle and loves to read - thanks!
