Top Christmas Gifts for Creative Teenage Boys

Updated on September 11, 2014

Best Gifts for Teen Boys

Teenagers are probably the most difficult people to find gifts for. Caught in a limbo between childhood and adulthood, teenagers tend to develop attitudes, interests and hobbies that are generally obscure and incomprehensible to the rest of the world. The fact that they are generally non-communicative during this period, or do so monosyllabically or with one-word-sentences at the most, makes things rather more difficult.

I happen to be the lucky mother of a 15 year old boy who was amiable enough at my request to take a glimpse into the teenage world of gift wish lists. I don't know whether gift dreams are in line with your teenager's but here are some gift ideas that might help.

All the gift ideas in this lens are creative and fun, they encourage bonding and communication between teenagers and their families and help keep them away from hours of mind numbing absorption in electronic games

A mountainbike

A mountain bike is a great gift idea for teenage boys. Mountainbiking is fun! It also has a lot of social, emotional, and health benefits. According to the Mayo Clinic, outdoor exercises like biking help decrease anxiety and stress, raise self-esteem and give people a sense of challenge, adventure and achievement. Furthermore, according to recent studies, teenagers who bike are 48 percent less likely to be overweight in adulthood.

I have to tell you that the quirkiness of my teenage son was such, that instead of opting to get a ready-made bike for his birthday, he prefered to buy the parts of a bike separately - yes, I mean everything- bike frame, fork, whhels, tires, ect- and built it himself from scratch! But I am sure that doesn't have to be the case for all teenagers!

Top Rated Mountain Bike

One of the things I love on this bike are the large 29" wheels which decrease your angle of attack over obstacles, and increase momentum, traction, stability and surface contact all of which make it really great to ride off road.

The aluminum overdrive frame, strong linear pull brakes, shimano gear system and Wolverine tyres all combine to make this bicycle a perfect entry level 29" at a great value. The Diamondback Overdrive V is available in four sizes, small (16"), medium (18"), large (20"), and XL (22").

Bicycle Parts to Buy

You can also find many quality bicycle parts on Amazon, either to replace broken or worn parts on your mointain bike or to actually build one from scratch!

Model Train Set

A model train set is great fun to play with. My son asked for his first starter set (locomotive, 3 wagons and tracks) three years ago and it is a hobby that grows with him and that he never gets tired of. We built together his first model landscape, which is much cheaper and certainly more creative and fun to do than buying a ready made landscape. It is easy to find everything you need in hobby and craft shops, like plaster cloth to build mountains with, fake trees and plants, different colored gravel and grass, roads, tunnels, houses and other buildings, streams, bridges etc. It is a very creative hobby you can spend hours with, it is educational and fun and very very versatile.

Best value for money model train kit

The set includes two decoder equipped locomotives (EMD GP40 and EMD FT-A), and two freight cars, an oval 56" x 38" track and one E-Z Command Control Center with wall pack and plug-in wiring. The digital control system allows independent control of the speed, direction and lighting of the two included locomotives. The track is quite "starter kit designed" though and I would recommend you buy a track expansion pack if you are planning to build your own model railway layout.

Model train parts and scenery ideas

On Amazon you can buy everything you need to create your dream model railway lanscape. From track expansion packs, bridges, tunnels and various realistic railway and city buildings, to model trees, bushes, grass and lakes

How to build a model train landscape and scenery

Building a model railway landscape is a fairly simple DIY activity with the proper tools and equipment. It is a very creative and fun activity to share and it helps a lot with bonding and communication between teenagers and DIY dads or mums. Everyday stuff like wood pieces, cardboard, plaster cloth, cork, styrofoam and acrylic paints can be easily transformed into stunning landscapes for hours of railway fun. Watch the video for basic step by step instructions and browse the internet for thousands of ideas, for example how to model water and waterfalls, how to add buildings and roads, how to incorporate lighting and electronics.

A Model Helicopter

Learning how to fly and control a model radio controlled helicopter is educative, fun and totally addictive. Most RC hobby grade helicopters are surprisingly easy to fly, relatively inexpensive, quite easy to maintain and repair and an ideal gift idea.

Top rated model helicopter - Buy it on Amazon

This one is my son's favorite! It is a tiny (18,5 cm long) and very light aluminum helicopter with 3 gyro channels which enable it to move in three directions. It charges either through a USB cable or the controller. It is really easy to learn how to fly and so far, ours has never broken in a crash!

I would definitely recommend this one. All parts are available separately in case you do manage to break them!

An old car

I don't want to give you any crazy ideas, by my son's latest whim was that he wanted an old VW beetle to rebuild an renovate by himself, so that it would be ready for him to drive at his 18th birthday!!!! I was veeeery sceptical at first, but I have to admit that the car has been in our backyard for 5 months now, my son is working on it very efficiently and surprisingly professionally, he does not neglect his studies, on the contrary and that was what I was mostly afraid of, he seems much happier and more "normal" and he is very grateful for our support and understanding, much more talkative and communicative.... but then again, as I said who can possibly understand teenagers?

@MichelleGaut: Thank you so much! One of the loveliest comments I ever got on a lens! Yes, the beetle was a major break through!

This is hands-down the best gift idea lens I've seen. I so agree with you about giving gifts that take kids away from electronic screens! We actually sold our game systems to finance a nice mountain bike, and he has never regretted it! And the beetle -- you guys completely rock as parents.

Wow, this was a surprising lens! I love the intro photo for starts... but the personal touch by including what your own son likes is great because even if someone else's teenage son doesn't like the same things, you've got people thinking about what would really make their sons happy and more communicative. Teenagers do want to be treated as people with real interests, not just brushed off as crazy or stupid.
