Music: The Best Gift of All

My Christmas gift to you, my family, and all my friends is a baker's dozen (thirteen) of my favorite Christmas songs. Some are sacred, and some are just plain funny. But I can listen to them over and over again. In most cases, the YouTube videos add to the presentation. So, in lieu of a Christmas playlist on a CD, I send to each of you this Hubpage of my favorite Christmas songs. Enjoy!

Happy Listening for a Merry Christmas!

#1 - Hallelujah Chorus -Quinhagak, Alaska - Kuinerrarmiut Elitnaurviat - 5th Grade

"It takes a village - to perform The Hallelujah Chorus," could very well be the subtitle for this video according to The Common American Journal (24 December 2010).

Nineteen 5th grade students of Jim Barthelman involved some of the 700 residents of their Yup'ik community to participate in this video made in December, 2010. The students and their teacher originally thought they were doing the video for other school communities. They were surprised when they learned it had viewed more than one million times on YouTube.

#2 - Straight No Chaser - 12 Days (original from 1998) 12 Days of Christmas as you've never heard it before

Straight No Chaser - A musical group that entertains its audience and has fun while doing so

Christmas Cheer

A "Male a Cappella Group"

A “male a cappella group” that is neither strait-laced nor straight-faced. They present vaudeville-style kitsch. Original member Randy Stine comments, “We take the music very seriously; we just don’t take ourselves too seriously.” They have reinvented a cappella on the modern pop landscape.

The group originally formed over a dozen years ago while students together at Indiana University. They reassembled after a top music producer from Atlantic saw a now-famous YouTube video of the group's "Twelve Days of Christmas." The rest was history with a recording contract and release of 2008’s HOLIDAY SPIRITS and 2009’s CHRISTMAS CHEERS as well as some newer albums.

Some information presented here from Straight No Chaser Bio Page.

#3 - Straight No Chaser - The Christmas Can-Can (Animated Version) Guaranteed to make you laugh or at least smile a little. "The Christmas Can-Can!"

The Most Recent from "Straight No Chaser"

# 4 - Ukuthula - Peace - Pro Cantu Youth Choir, Traditional, Recorded during concert on 21 Aug 2011 in St Georges Cathedral Cape Town, Soloist - Astrid Joseph

I first heard Ukuthula sung by the Roanoke Valley Children's Choir under the direction of Director Kim Davidson. This song and its presentation which was very close to the presentation in this video wowed the audience. Hats off to Kim for introducing us to this new piece of choral music.

This choir sings of "Peace," the wish of probably most of us during the dark days of December.

Ukuthula - Peace

Kulumhlaba we zono - In this (broken) world of trouble

Igazi like Jesu lin yenyez' - The blood of Jesus flowed (so that you could have:)

Ukuthula - Peace

Usindiso - Redemption

Ukubonga - Praise

Ukutholwa - Faith

Ukunqoba - Victory

Induduzo - Comfort

There are many versions of this traditional "hymn" on YouTube and similar sites. In my humble opinion, this is among the best. Enjoy! Peace!

# 5 - Bing Crosby White Christmas - From: Holiday Inn (1942)

Written by Irving Berlin; Bing Crosby's recording is thought to be the best-selling single of all time.

The first public performance of the "White Christmas" was sung by Bing Crosby, on his NBC radio show The Kraft Music Hall on Christmas Day, 1941. The song was prominent in the musical film Holiday Inn, and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1942. In the film, Bing Crosby sings "White Christmas" as a duet with actress Marjorie Reynolds, though her voice was dubbed by Martha Mears. This now-familiar song also opened the Bing Crosby - Danny Kaye film White Christmas.

An all-time favorite which has been remastered in color.

#6 - Band Aid - Do They Know its Christmas 1984 HiDef - From: Holiday Favorites, Nov 1, 2011

The reasoning and production of this song and video are as appropriate today as they were when first produced in 1984.

Band Aid was a British and Irish charity supergroup, founded in 1984 by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia by releasing the record Do They Know It's Christmas? for the Christmas market that year. The single surpassed the hopes of the producers to become the Christmas number one on that release.

The record was released on November 29, 1984, and went straight to No. 1 in the UK singles chart, outselling all the other records in the chart put together. It became the fastest- selling single of all time in the UK, selling a million copies in the first week alone. It stayed at No. 1 for five weeks, selling over three million copies and becoming easily the biggest-selling single of all time in the UK.

Song Lyrics:

It's Christmas time

There's no need to be afraid

At Christmas time

We let in light and we banish shade

And in our world of plenty

We can spread a smile of joy

Throw your arms around the world

At Christmas time

But say a prayer

Pray for the other ones

At Christmas time it's hard

But when you're having fun

There's a world outside your window

And it's a world of dread and fear

Where the only water flowing

Is the bitter sting of tears

And the Christmas bells that ring there

Are the clanging chimes of doom

Well tonight thank God it's them instead of you

And there won't be snow in Africa

This Christmas time

The greatest gift they'll get this year is life

Where nothing ever grows

No rain nor rivers flow

Do they know it's Christmas time at all?

BRIDGE:

(Here's to you) raise a glass for everyone

(Here's to them) underneath that burning sun

Do they know it's Christmas time at all?

END:

Feed the world

Feed the world

Feed the world

Let them know it's Christmas time again

Feed the world

Let them know it's Christmas time again

#7 - Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer! - Randy and Ronnie Brooks

Here's a little fun...The Brooks hold court at the Listening Room Cafe in Nashville (Cummins Station) 12.08.08. BTW, Randy wrote the legendary Christmas song.

My kids and I use to sing this song during long car trips during the Christmas season. Now, I'm the Grandma and I wonder if they're singing with their kids!

#8 - Carol of the Bells - Mormon Tabernacle Choir

An extravaganza with bell choir, full orchestra and choir. The video lets the listener wander throughout the performers.

A long-time favorite of mine and many others who appreciate the talent of this fine choir.

#9 - Andrea Bocelli- Santa la Noche( O Holy Night).. MI NAVIDAD - In Italian

One of my two favorite selections of this hymn. The language doesn't make any difference to the meaning and feeling of the words. Also includes nice visuals.

#10 - Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo - O Holy Night / Cantique De Noel (Christmas-Vienna 1999) - Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo singing Cantique D

The second of my two favorites of this traditional song. The lip-sync portion is a little off in this video, but the audio is still great!

#11 - The Bonus - one of my all time favorites!

Mazowsze - Lulajze, Jezuniu - Lully, lullay, Little Jesus (Polish Christmas carol) - Sleep Infant Jesus - Frederyk Chopin

Lulajze, Jezuniu a Polish lullaby, is one of the most touching tunes in the world. It is sung here by the world-famous Song and Dance Ensemble, "MAZOWSZE" ('Mazovia"). The women wear traditional folk costumes from Kocierzew, near Lowicz in the Mazovia region.

A hauntingly beautiful Christmas hymn sung by a world-renowned dance and singing Polish company.

Mormon Tabernacle Choir - Always a listening experience.

#12 - Mormon Tabernacle Choir - Hallelujah, Christmas 2010

I finish this musical gift of one dozen musical videos with one of my favorite and most majestic renditions of the Handel's Hallelujah Chorus.

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir sings the classical and beloved Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah at Tabernacle Square, Salt Lake City, UT.

But, please, continue on with this HubPage for one bonus selection!
