Clean up your room day - May 10th
This is an actual photo of my child's room
Clean up your room day is May 10th!
While some might this that is directed only at children, I know some adults who also need to clean their rooms. So in fairness, let's embrace this holiday and make it a family day. Even if your room is clean I bet you have a junk drawer that could use some help.
How to clean your room
The first step in the book is "Always wait until your mother hollers, "GET UP THERE AND CLEAN YOUR ROOM-NOW!" using all three of your names. Once she does, you'd better get moving."
I am definitely buying this book. It will appeal to my 11-yr-old who always does better with a bit of humor.
Lockers are great for a kid's room
Before the kids can clean their rooms, what is valuable must be determined. Behind those closed doors are treasures that he refuses to part with. Some of the is our fault because when we adopted him (our grandson), the treasures were all he had from his past.
If a child hangs onto something that you consider to be junk, it is time to talk about it. We have allowed a couple of pieces to stay while removing most of the others. Now that he is older, he is willing to let some of it go without a fight but now he has to tell us the memory associated with it before it can stay.
Lockers are a great storage idea - just don't open them!
Need some ideas to get started?
I love "Fly Lady". This is a great site for total house cleaning with no guilt. One of the things that I found to be helpful is the "31 Beginner BabySteps". The first day is shine your sink. In 31 days, all the rooms in the house can be clean including the kids. I actually joined the website because there is so much wonderful information and I am "Flying".

Flylady, net shares this simple philosophy. "The voices that you hear in your head keep telling you that you are behind and you have to get it all done now. We are going to quiet those negative voices that are beating you up constantly and replace the
Here are two storage items that make it easier for our child
Even with the lockers, storage is still an issue. He has electronic stuff that gets scattered all over the room. We like the Sterlite products and use them in other rooms too. We also appreciate that they are made in America.
We had the one shelf and the rod running the length of the closet. Doesn't work so we have replaced it with a closet organizer. This is much less expensive than a custom closet organizer and the dust that might collect on the shelves is non-existent. At least he doesn't have to dust here.
Unscientific cleaning poll
Do you have a designated day to do deep cleaning in any of your rooms?
Get a handle on the dirty clothes
Every room must have a hamper. The issue here is that the clothes get piled on the hamper and never make it inside. Like us, we have no hampers with lids. Better chance for the clothes to get inside. Still, there are some with lids here if you are organized enough to open and close them.
Make it fun
There are some children who have clean rooms. My husband was one of them but he is outnumbered here.
This is a one day event. We do the surface cleaning on a regular basis but seldom attack the closet or the lockers. Clean your room day involves bigger tasks like pulling out the bed to see what has made it way to out-of-sight, out-of mind. It takes longer to move the furniture to vacuum.
We are usually tired when we are done and make a point of doing something fun. One year we went for ice cream. As he gets older, we find other things that he enjoys. Good behavior deserves a reward. After cleaning the locker, we all deserve something special.
