Clever Costumes Based on Puns

Updated on January 11, 2015

Very Punny Costumes Any Time

If you're looking for some clever Halloween costumes, I've come up with a few based on puns. Shoot, these costumes based on puns would also work for all sorts of other occasions when a bit of levity is in order.

Puns are jokes that are a play on words. The words that make up the pun can have more than one meaning or take advantage of another meaning for the same words.

An example is the costume shown here. Give this guy a gun or other weapon and this Halloween costume becomes "A Salt with a Deadly Weapon."

In case these puns make no sense, I've briefly explained them. I hope you get them, and yes, please feel free to groan.

Return a Dress

Clever Costumes Based on Puns - Return A Dress

For the "Return a Dress" costume, wear a slip, like this one, and carry an old ugly dress on a hanger with a price tag dangling from the sleeve. Another option is to carry a shopping bag with the dress you're returning falling out the side.

The pun: Return Address (like you write on an envelope)

You can return a dress in just your slip but since you can't go return a dress without a purse and shoes, here are some options to keep you covered.

Planet of the Grapes

Planet of the Grapes - For When You're Feeling Fruity and Fun

For the Planet of the Grapes costume, start with a basic purple canvas like the purple pajamas or sweats shown below. Add some grapes and planets here and there. Off you go!

The Pun: Planet of the Apes

You'll need some planets and purple background clothing to pull of this outta this world costume.

A Salt with a Deadly Weapon

A Salt With a Deadly Weapon - Punny and Funny

This salt shaker costume just needs a toy gun to complete it. Wear this clever Halloween costume and listen to the groans. I just love puns!

The pun: Assault with a Deadly Weapon

And to complete this costume, "deadly" weapons. Be sure to keep it fun for this one.

Pun: the usually humorous use of a word in such a way as to suggest two or more of its meanings or the meaning of another word similar in sound

Agent Orange

Agent Orange - Agent Orange Is His Name, Subtle is NOT His Game

Agent Orange is a crime-fighting Fed. His suit may be gaudy but he gets noticed. Whether that's good or bad is beside the point. He's Agent Orange.

The pun: Agent Orange was a chemical used in the Vietnam War, which is not at all funny.

Even Agent Orange needs a little help. Make sure to carry some helpful accessories for when you spot a crime.

Iron Man

Iron Man -- Getting the Ironing Done One Shirt at a Time - He's Neat, He's Tidy, He's Iron Man

Iron Man is a super hero. He irons! Iron Man can iron pleats, starch a shirt, and put a crease in slacks you could cut butter with. Be a hit with the ladies. Be Iron Man.

The pun: Iron Man is well, Iron Man. This Iron Man carries a big iron and helps with the laundry.

Start your ensemble with a neutral background like a plain colored sweat suit, then walk softly and carry a big iron. Just don't plug it in. Hangers and spray starch are optional, but recommended!

Hairy Houdini

Amazing Hairy Houdini

Hairy Houdini is an amazing magician, but he's not such a great escape artist. He (or she) can untangle his (or her) hair like nobody's business, if he (or she) could just get out of this darned straight jacket.

The pun: Harry Houdini was a magician and escape artist extraordinaire.

The straightjacket is key to this fun outfit. And do not forget your hair dryer or pick. for Hairy's hair.

Cereal Killer

Cereal Killer - Walk Softly and Carry a Big Spoon

A cereal killer obviously kills breakfast food. How? Well, he carries a toy gun or knife and of course, a spoon. The toy knife or gun may be a moot point. You can just eat the cereal and it'll be dead, right?

The pun: Serial Killer

More Fun and Easy Ideas for Dress Up

Freudian Slip

Wear a slip and pencil on a goatee. Voila! A Freudian slip.

The pun: A Freudian slip is a slip of tongue, saying something that you may subconsciously or unconsciously be thinking.

Buck An Ear

For the minimalist who wants to be clever but do so in an oh-so-subtle way, wear a dollar bill on each ear. When asked what you are, say "I'm a pirate. A buck-an-ear."

The pun: A buccaneer is a specific type of pirate but is now a synonym for pirate.

Thanks to MiddleSister for these great ideas!

Absolutely adorable Halloween pun costumes. I never would have thought of these although, one year, I rounded up another Jewish friend for a Halloween party. We wore cardboard cutouts of apples and had big jewish stars on. Our costume? Apple Jews!

I love puns. Most of the Zazzle products that I create are punny. I'm very big on Gnome puns, since we have had many gnome figurines at home. Love the puns!

Very clever ... I remember the Freudian Slip costume Meg Ryan wore in "D.O.A." with Dennis Quaid. I also had a teacher friend who dressed in an elf costume and called it a Subordinate Claus. Cereal Killer is pretty funny too. Boo-lessed!

Agent Orange is pretty great, but A Salt with a Deadly Weapon takes the cake for me. I'm a pun lover (some say I'm a pun abuser, and threaten punitive action), and would absolutely rock any of these costumes for Halloween.
