Top Construction-Site Toys

Updated on March 8, 2017

Dump Trucks, Bulldozers, and Cranes

I have done the research for the best toys for my little boys. My Grandsons love trucks, bulldozers, cranes--any vehicle you see on a construction site! I have spent many hours researching the best construction site toys. All the toys I have listed here are highly rated by users.

This particular gift guide is a spin off from my page Top Ride On Toys for Three Year Old Boys. I have three grandsons who inspire my search for toys. I also have four grand-daughthers who are always giving me ideas, as well.

The top toys you find here, as stated before, are highly recommended.

I have also found two brands of toys that are eco-friendly (Wow and Plan Toys).

Original image of the little boy and the dump truck is from Flickr user Olaf using Creative Commons.

Dump Trucks:

WOW Dump Truck Toys made the cut for my gift toy guide! - Recommended for children 18 months to 5 years of age.

Eco-friendly toys! They sound wonderful! From WOW. Really. Go check them out on Amazon by using the links below. If you buy one, let me know what you think of these environmentally friendly "construction" toys.

This is one of the best selling brands on this page!

My grand-daughter (yes, a girl likes construction toys) is three years old and has several of these WOW toys. They are definitely sturdy and are just the right size for indoor or out door play. These toys are very well made and I could not find any fault with this brand. They will be handed down many times over.

WOW Dump Truck gets rave reviews on Amazon!

WOW Dudley Dump Truck - Construction (7 Piece Set)
WOW Dudley Dump Truck - Construction (7 Piece Set)

Removable pieces for creative play. This toy rates 5 stars on Amazon.

CAT 3in1 Ride On Dump Truck - For ages 1 year and up.

Below you will see the newest version of the CAT Ride On Dump Truck. I purchased one for my grandsons several years ago and it was a favorite for both of them. This CAT dump truck is extremely durable.

Three in one means that the dump truck is 1) a ride on 2) a push toy 3) a toy truck with a tilting bed.

Few toys are suitable for toddlers; this is one that I know (from personal experience) toddlers love.

Perfect Dump Truck Gift Book - "If I could drive a dump truck!" A paperback book from Tonka

The reviews are good for this paperback book. Yes, it is a paperback and not a board book so be forewarned.

Tonka: If I Could Drive A Dump Truck
Tonka: If I Could Drive A Dump Truck

Big pictures and a story to go with them. As you child grows, the story will become more interesting. For younger children, big pictures are a plus.

Bulldozers:

(aka "front-loader")

Bulldozer Construction Toys from Plan Toys and CAT - Add on the book "If I could drive a bulldozer!" for ages 3+

This bulldozer comes with its own driver! Looks like a winning toy to me.

Plan Toys are made by one of the best companies around. This company is committed to maintaining the highest standard of ethics while creating innovative educational toys for every developmental stage of childhood. Their toys are "green" "safe." and "smart"! (information found on the Plan Toys website)

Tonka: If I Could Drive A Bulldozer
Tonka: If I Could Drive A Bulldozer

You will need a "manual" for using this bulldozer, so check out this one from Tonka.

Backhoes and Diggers:

Bruder Toys Caterpillar Excavator - CAT Digger Recommended for ages 36 months to 8 years

Great digger for indoors or out. Made of fade resistant ABS (visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acrylonitrile_butadiene_styreneplastic to learn about it) with no screws.

Bruder Mack has received high marks from Amazon customers.

Toy Cranes:

Boys (and girls!) Need Space to Play

Stake out a little plot of land that they can use as their own construction yard where the toy Dump Trucks and construction site toy equipment are kept. Let your children build their own dream system of roads, bridges and tunnels. Then just sit back and watch the fun! If you designate a spot where kids can dig and build, you will be a happy parent.

Click Tonka Toughest Mighty Crane to purchase this crane from Amazon.

Construction-workers-in-training can move big loads with this real-looking crane! The boom rotates a full 360 degrees. Use the crane to hook, lift and dump objects and debris onto the dump bed. Constructed from steel and highly durable plastic, this awesome crane is guaranteed for life by Tonka! This toy crane would definitely keep my boys occupied for several dirt-digging hours. This toy deserves to be one of my best toys for Ages 3 and up.

A Whole Construction Site:

LEGO City Construction Site: - For children ages 6 years to 12

Includes and entire city construction site! Wow. This could be the only gift you have to give your child. I know that my grandsons love Lego toys and this one looks like a winner. Yes, the price is hefty, but so much is included including instruction booklets that one reviewer said were very easy to follow for the 5 year old who was lucky enough to receive the Lego City Construction Site!

One of the cons with Lego toys is that they are constantly falling apart and have to be reassembled. Well, yes, this is has been happening for many decades, but the blocks are still a perennial favorite toy.

A good suggestion is to buy or have on hand plastic boxes for storing the building pieces. One reviewer suggested a "brownie pan" sized box and maybe some plastic covered bowls for the little pieces. I like plastic shoe boxes, too.

I have a grandson who is in the first grade and absolutely adores LEGO construction blocks. He might have trouble with building stuff, but he does not get frustrated. Who knows why? All I know is that he is occupied for hours on end.

Construction Site books: - Check out these books on Amazon!

Books are compact and will engage your child for a long time. Perfect for travel. These construction site books are highly rated by customers on Amazon. I have added my own opinion about these books, too. Click on each link to find out more about the books and read the reviews.

A Year at a Construction Site (Time Goes by)
A Year at a Construction Site (Time Goes by)

I know that my grandchildren love to scour images in books trying to find the tiniest details, so I know that they would just devour this book.

Who Made This Cake?
Who Made This Cake?

Wonderfully detailed drawings of machines on a contruction site. Yes, the title implies the book is about making a cake--and it is--but it shows how children make a GIANT cake using trucks, cranes, etc...on a building site.

I love feedback. Let me know about your experience with these construction site "best toys" I have selected.

Thanks for visiting!

This really is the coolest lens I have come across so far. What little boy doesn't like construction toys and what man doesn't have fond memories of them as a kid. Good job and thank you!

My sister has two of them (boys, not the toys), and they adore this type of play and games. The bigger is also an aspiring carpenter:)

@anonymous: I found a vintage Tonka Steamroller and Drill on eBay and put it on this site. If you come back today, you will see it above. Good luck and I hope this helps.

Have you ever taken your grandsons to Lowes or Home Depot. They have craft time for kids. My kids made binoculars. They had hammers and nails with their little aprons on. It was so fun.

@amkatee: Bass Pro Shops also have some interesting workshops for kids, too. My grandsons made a birdhouse. That would be considered "construction" wouldn't it?
