Controller Free Video Games

Updated on September 6, 2013

3D Motion Controlled Video Games

Hands free motion controlled video games created an entirely new explosion in gaming during 2011. Wii first introduced the masses to motion-based gaming. Then Kinect for Xbox 360 took things another step and all but eliminated controllers. The video game industry continues to grow both in popularity and innovation, especially with motion advancements.

These motion-controlled games have become the hottest new video game innovation, especially with the Xbox 360 Kinect and the Wii. Now you can play video games in 3D with NO controllers.

The latest innovation in 2012 from Microsoft is an infrared tracker worn on the wrist. This could make gaming innovation controls even more popular than ever before. Here you'll find reviews of some of the latest in motion-controlled 3D video games for kids and adults.

See Kinect in Action!

This Kinect system is SO innovative and unique, far beyond the usual in video games. Created with unique laser technology, it provides full-body 3D motion capture, and is also capable of facial recognition and even voice recognition capabilities. This 3D game engine has been wildly popular since thes release of the Xbox Kinect 360.

Kinect Uses Sensors to Interpret 3D

Brilliant technology from Kinect using sensors and range cameras.

Kinect is based on software technology developed internally by Rare, a subsidiary of Microsoft Game Studios. The Kinect sensor is a horizontal bar connected to a small base with a motorized pivot. It is designed to be positioned either above or below the video display. It uses range camera technology which interprets 3D scene information from a continuously-projected infrared structured light.

Having played three titles (Kinect Adventures, Kinect Sports, and Your Shape) over a span of a couple of hours, I was amazed at the 3D experience of this Kinect system. It more than exceeded my expectations - couldn't be happier with the purchase. Folks all over will be thrilled about what Kinect means for the future of gaming.

Kinect Sensors Require Additional Power

About your power connection for the new Kinect Sensors

The Kinect sensor's motorized tilt mechanism requires more power than can be supplied via the Xbox 360's USB ports. So the Kinect sensor makes use of a proprietary connector combining USB communication with additional power.

These redesigned "Xbox 360 S" models include a special auxillary port for accommodating the connector. Older models require a special power supply cable & this is included with the sensor. That splits the connection into separate USB and power connections, and power is supplied by way of an AC adapter.

Kinect Game Reviews...

Review #1: Kinect "Adventures" Game

Kinect Adventures tracks every move you make!

Kinect Adventures comes with the Kinect system. It is similar to Wii, yet I found it to be SO much more fun than any Wii game. It can track your every move - hands, head, arms, feet, hips, EVERYTHING!

No controller can detect whether you're moving side-to-side, or backwards and forwards, or squatting or jumping while at the same time moving your arms and feet. It's just brilliant how well Kinect works.

One game in particular really shows the potential of this unique Kinect game system. You're in an underwater tank and crazy fish keep poking holes in the glass. You have to plug these holes to keep the water from coming in and sometimes I had to use both hands, both feet, and my head to plug all of the holes - all at the same time.

Review #2 - Kinect "Your Shape" Game - Kinect Your Shape is a Fitness FAVORITE!!!

Your Shape Fitness Evolved - Xbox 360
Your Shape Fitness Evolved - Xbox 360

Your Shape really highlights just what this Kinect system is capable of. In this game, you are an infrared replication of yourself on the screen. The shape of my body was precise, and it even picked up the logo on the t-shirt I was wearing. There are several exercises you can do and you follow along with an instructor. You have to stay in sync with the instructor to earn points and to advance to higher levels. The Kinect system does an amazing job of following your every movement and comparing it to the instructor. Not spreading your feet far enough apart? It'll tell you. Not keeping the right rhythm? It'll tell you. It's so much more immersive than anything I've played on the Wii. I can now actually see myself doing Your Shape instead of going to the gym.

We just broke down and bought the Wii last year. Now you really make me want to go get the Kinect especially for that dance game. Nice job!

The first time I saw this advertisement I was sold. The advancement over the other gaming systems is almost unreal. I would definitely opt for this system over the other one.

I've seen this advertised, but never in person. Looks pretty neat. I still am partial to my Wii and my Wii fit, so I wouldn't add another gaming system. Great lens!
