Cuddlekins Bears for Loving

Updated on November 23, 2013

A huge bear like this cuddly one will make a memory for the whole family.

My son had a huge stuffed chimp and i'm here to tell you about the effect this critter had on us all.

He suffered from severe asthma attacks that came on as suddenly as a thunderbolt during the middle of a Winter's night. From several hours of happy calm sleep he and I would waken to horrible wracking coughs that truly sounded like thunder cracking.

My remedy of choice was to carry

the little tot to the back bathroom. It was small enough that I could turn it into a steam chamber by running the shower full tilt on hottest hot.

I held my son in my arms and stood outside the shower, facing him towards the steam that poured into the room. Really, it was no larger than a closet, so that was easy.

After fifteen minutes of steaming heat

we were both ready for a cool down. If the treatment worked we then moved to the kitchen for a cup of cocoa or some warm tea. (I hadn't yet learned that milk could aggravate such conditions, and it felt soothing to him.)

Still, when I put him back in bed he was worn out and often felt sad from all the exertion. One holiday season hubby and I found the solution to the return to a cold bed after an asthma attack.

We found Chubby and took him home

and wrapped him up for a gift. It was a challenge to keep a damper on our excitement, but we were all lucky that our dear little boy had no more asthma attacks before the big day when he received the stuffed animal.

Now he had a companion waiting

for him in bed after subsequent asthma attacks. Occasionally the steam wasn't sufficient to break up the congestion and I'd strap my son into the car and whisk him to the ER for medical treatment, but always, waiting back at home was his faithful companion, the big fat stuffed animal.

May your children be free of asthma and may they enjoy the soft and cuddly company of their own big fat stuffed bear!

A bear, a chimp, a wolf or a tiger - any of them could bring joy and companionship to a child, and a peaceful return to bed after waking in the night.

Tough as they are in the wild, a tiger in the home and be as cuddly as a teddy bear.

Did or do your children have special big stuffed toys or do you want them to have one? Do you have any stuffed animal tales to tell?

@PaigSr: Isn't that fun. Kids seem to especially like it when they can really get their arms around a big bear.

Not sure who made the bear but it is big and cuddly and the youngest still has it on his bed.

@sousababy: Especially because my son occasionally had sleeping trouble not caused by asthma, it was such a comfort for him to have his Chubby.

My daughter has more than one "stuffy friend" and she chooses a different one to cuddle every night. I had a pink teddy bear with blue eyes, as a child. They really DO comfort children (and adults).
