Day of the Dead Sugar Skull Costumes

Updated on February 2, 2017

Day of the Dead

Are you looking for day of the dead/sugar skull costume ideas and inspiration? Then this page is for you! Lots of ideas, inspiration and places to buy day of the dead items online! It's all here!!

I created this page because I have a fascination with day of the dead, it's traditions, it's meanings, it's custom and especially it's art and creativity.

Since having a severe family loss in my life... I think it's extremely important to have traditions or customs whereby you remember those loved now lost!!

I quite look up to the Mexicans/Latin Americans for their wonderful tradition... I think it's quite healthy... I think the western world has turned death into a taboo that everyone likes to pretend isn't the central core of almost everything and the only real definite we have in our lives... that we're all eventually going to die and no one really likes to talk directly about it. I understand why... as there's a fear and an uncomfortableness about the subject... but not talking about it and pretending it's not there just makes the fear and awkwardness worse I believe.

I don't necessarily believe that the deceased person comes back to visit... but I definitely believe that the whole process, tradition and actions are extremely healthy and beneficial to the family members still among the living.

Hence why I love El Dia de los Muertos... I believe it takes the seriousness away of such a morbid subject and makes it more lighthearted... so everyone can have a laugh and enjoy the festivities of such a serious subject. Through their tears comes joy and laughter through community festivity and support! And having it happen once a year helps to take the taboo away as well as giving those grieving a very good opportunity to grieve in a healthy manner, making grieving a more open and acceptable practice which helps the whole community!

So here's my page for those who wish to dress up in the traditional costume and face paint / make up. I've added plenty of different face paint ideas below to give you ideas of what you'd like to do.

I've also included lots of mexican/fiesta themed party decorations and wares for you to hold a fabulous Day of the Dead Party should you want to!! And why not even consider taking a leaf out of the Mexican book and creating a shrine of your own for your lost loved ones too?

Keep an eye out for my other Day of the Dead pages too.

Enjoy.

I've seen this style of costume before, but didn't realize it had a name. My niece would love this for next Halloween, since she loves applying makeup in unique ways. Loved the mariachi figures.

Growing up in San Antonio I saw a lot of Day of the Dead... but it took years for me to begin to understand it. I agree with you, I think it's a healthy way to deal with death as a real part of life. Great Lens! Squid Angel blessed.
