The Candy Cauldron is a popular piece for collectors.

A Halloween Village

Department 56 is a division of Enesco Gifts. The company began in 1976 when the new company produced a small group of hand-painted ceramic lighted Christmas cottages. A holiday tradition for many families that began with the inexpensive paper decorated Putz houses and villages.

In 1998, the company manufactured a Halloween line and it became very popular with lovers of trick-or-treat, haunted houses, spider webs, spooky trees and ghosts. For many of us we are just nostalgic for this fun October holiday and the Halloween village reminds us of our childhood.

This collection of creepy houses and accessories replicate a small town that is decorated for the October holiday. I spent many an evening when I worked at the mall looking into the glass cases and imaging putting together my haunted town. These collectibles are hand painted and include charming details including pumpkins on the porches and leaves on the tiny roofs.

As the popularity of the first line of haunted houses rose, the company manufactured different lines of villages to reach more collectors. Now the Snow Village Halloween line includes

  • Haunted Rails: As the name suggests a haunted railway station and all of the expected finds
  • Ghost Town: Western themed Halloween village
  • Halloween Carnival: Imagine what would happen if your favorite Halloween characters took over a carnival, expect to find clowns
  • Zombie Pub Crawl: The walking dead crawl through a village
  • Witch Hollow: Witches hats themed homes
  • Trick-or-Treat Lane: Traditional Halloween houses and accessories

Halloween Family Traditions

Creating your own eerie village can become a fun tradition for you and your kids. And can become a focal point for your Halloween party or trick-or-treaters.

Consider gifting your children with an accessory or a coveted piece for their October birthday. Or chose one as a family. Their favorite buildings and accessories will become treasured family heirlooms.

Accessories and new pieces add to your collection

The original collection includes: lighted houses, accessories, and fun new pieces every year. Serious collectors buy pieces every year to make their little town complete. Many pieces are "retired" every year so many collectors buy as soon as the pieces are released or they look for retired pieces on online auction sites.
