Disney Cars Birthday Cakes
Make a Disney Pixar Cars Birthday Cake!
Cars is one of the most popular birthday party themes for little boys right now. My little boy had a Disney Cars birthday party for his fourth birthday party. We bought our cake at the grocery store, but you can make your own Cars cake at home too.
There are plenty of reasons why you might want to make a Disney Cars birthday cake at home. Perhaps you want to have a special flavor, or you want to use only fresh, organic ingredients. Maybe you like cooking, or you want a special shape (most store-bought cakes are square). Whatever your reasons for making your own Cars birthday cake, you might want to get some of these Cars birthday cake supplies to help you out.
McQueen and Mater Cake Topper
My little boy had these cake toppers for his fourth birthday party. You can get them on grocery store cakes, but if you bake at home, you can have them too. They're very cute, and they are toys that your child can play with after the party.

If you're not very good at cake decorating, then you could always bake a cake and use this Cars candle, or you can buy a store-bought plain cake and top it with a Cars candle.
Use a Crumb Coat to Make Decorating Go More Smoothly
When I was a kid, I used to decorate cakes at my Grandmother's house. When I started making cakes for my kids' birthdays, I thought everything would go smoothly. Unfortunately, whenever I decorated my cakes, I would always get crumbs on the cake. After a couple of cake mistakes, I gave up. I didn't know how to make a nice looking cake; I guess I'd leave the baking to the professionals at my local bakery.
Then I learned about the crumb coat.
Basically, a crumb coat is a thin layer of frosting that you put on the cake so that the crumbs will not be on the outside of the cake. You'll want to thin the icing for the crumb coat a little. Wait for the cake to cool, and then spread on the crumb coat. Next, wait for the crumb coat to dry. You might want to put the cake in the refrigerator overnight; at least wait a couple of hours for the coat to harden. Before you move on, the crumb coat should be dry. Next, you can frost with your normal frosting. Don't worry if there are crumbs in the crumb coat, the crumb coat acts like a glue, holding the crumbs in place. Your cake should look better! Wilton has more information about the crumb coat on their web site.
