Disneyland Halloween Tips & Tricks

Updated on October 4, 2012

Halloween Time at Disneyland

Disneyland has been letting the ghosts, spirits and villains out to run around the park during a special Halloween Time. It is a time when "the spirits of the season are everywhere."

During the Halloween Time at Disneyland guests are invited to dress up in costumes and even trick or treat during an evening of fun in the Disneyland Park. They treated to a Halloween-themed park with special decorations, Meet 'N' Greets with the Disney villains, a Halloween parade with Mikey, Halloween Scream Fireworks and Halloween transformed rides.

We've been several years during Christmas and I've wanted to do Disneyland at Halloween since I first heard about them decorating the park in a Halloween theme. This year looks to be the year we are going make it happen because of the extra incentive to see the Art of Frankenweenie exhibit.

I've shared our favorite Tips to Enjoy Disneyland at Christmas read on to discover our tips for spending Halloween in Disneyland from our first hand experiences this year. I'll be adding more after our visit.

P.S. If you don't get a chance to make it to Disneyland at Halloween, by visiting this lens and watching many of the video clips, you can take a virtual trip and feel like you were there.

Disney Providing Health Trick or Treats

One of the fun events that visitors to Halloween Time get to participate in is Trick or Treating throughout the park.

Special table (like the one pictured above) are set up for costumed trick or treaters. They promise, "Special trick-or-treat stations with candy and healthy goodies."

I wasn't sure about what the "healthy goodies might be, until I looked more closely at the photograph. In this photo from the 2011 Disneyland Halloween there are bags of baby carrots scattered with the bags of candy. I'm impressed.

We'll see what they are going to do for 2012.

Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy

Space Mountain on Halloween

For Halloween, Space Mountain gets a Halloween makeover as the ghosts turn it into Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy.

This is the one ride I am most concerned that will be the scariest (for me), since the holographic ghosts jump out at you as you go through the ride. I guess if you keep your eyes closed it should be o.k.

The ghost looks a bit like the Mummy movie from a few years back.

My youngest found several of the Halloween Space Mountain video clips. Thankfully she's watched them, so hopefully won't be shreaking our ears off with her screams.

From what I could find out about the ride by reading the Disneyland Blog this is what we have to anticipate:

  • Out of the darkness and swirling galaxies of Space Mountain, ghosts try to pluck riders from their seats as they speed through space. The drops and curves of the journey are even scarier with piercing screams and haunting music.
Those who might find ghosts popping out to be a bit too frightening can still enjoy the outside of Space Mountain. The exterior has been decorated to transform into a light and music show with eerie images.

Spoilers: Watch for ghosts popping out when the roller coaster drops and as you near the unloading area (as seen in the video feature clip).

Frankenweenie at Disneyland

Tim Burton on Frankenweenie Exhibit at Disneyland

Hear what Tim Burton has to say about the making of Frankenweenie and the exhibit on tour at Disneyland from DisneyParks.

Frankenweenie at Disneyland

Halloween seems to be Tim Burton's holiday. During Halloween the park is over run with characters from Nightmare Before Christmas as Jack Skelllington and his friends take over the Haunted Mansion.

The Art of Frankenweenie Exhibit is on display at Disneyland in Anaheim from September 14 through November 5, 2012. Part of this exhibit time coincides with the Halloween Time at Disneyland, since Halloween is coming early this year with the release of Frankenweenie.

This exhibit is a once-in-a-lifetime behind the scenes look at the making of Frankenweenie from the initial 2 dimensional sketches done by Tim Burton to the final 3 dimensional puppet models used in creating the stop motion film.

We are looking forward to being able to see the exhibit.

Dia de Los Muertos

Day of the Dead in Disneyland

Dia de los Muertos, also known as Day of the Dead is a Hispanic holiday that honors those who have died as a joyous occasion, not a sad one

This holiday is celebrated around the same time as Halloween, All Saints' Day (November 1) and All Souls' Day (November 2).

As part of their Halloween Time Disneyland has included a tribute area for Dia de los Muertos at Rancho del Zocalo in Frontierland.

Decorations include many of the traditional Dia de los Muertos tradition, with skeletons, sugar skulls, marigolds and papel picado which can all be seen in the image to the right along with a large Catrina or Katrina. Atars to honor the dead are decorated with candles, flowers, fruit, bread, photographs, favorite foods and treasured belongings.

Celebrations include traditional music and a face-painting booth.
