Doctor Who Costume: The Eleventh Dr. Jacket and Accessories

Updated on January 12, 2016

The Eleventh Doctor's Tweed Jacket: 5th and 6th Seasons

Are you putting together a Doctor Who Eleventh Doctor costume for Halloween or cosplay? Do you want to know how to find the best tweed jacket to replicate Matt Smith's young professorial-but-hip look as he plays the Doctor?

Doctor Who, the popular BBC television show which first premiered in 1963, has had twelve doctors to date, and each one with his own unique style of dressing. The Eleventh Doctor, played by Matt Smith, is no exception. His trademark look in the 5th and 6th seasons includes a tweed jacket, button-down shirt, skinny black pants or denim jeans, black boots, a red or blue bow tie, and matching suspenders.

If you're assembling a Doctor Who costume, here are some ideas for finding a tweed jacket like the Eleventh Doctor wears.

What Kind of Tweed Jacket Does the Doctor Wear?

During the 5th and 6th seasons, the Doctor wears three different tweed jackets. For three episodes in Season 5 (the two-parter Time of Angels and Victory of the Daleks), he wears a brown or fawn-colored Harris tweed jacket, and for the rest of the 5th season he wears a darker brown Donegal tweed jacket. Both are single-breasted with two-button closure.

During Season 6, the Doctor wears a single-breasted brown check or Shetland tweed jacket with three-button closure.

Most of the time, his jackets have brown leather elbow patches. He also wears a pair of red suspenders (or braces, if you're British).

Replica of Fifth and Sixth Season Doctor Who Jacket

Officially-Licenced Replica of Doctor Who Eleventh Doctor's Jacket

The easiest (although not cheapest) route for finding a good jacket would be to buy this officially-licensed BBC costume replica. Currently only a couple of sizes are offered, but check back to see if other sizes come back in stock again.

This jacket is perfect for anyone wanting to dress like the Doctor. Its wool fabric plaid pattern is unique to the 6th season.

Quality craftsmanship went into this jacket, which is...

  • fully lined
  • with functional outside and inside pockets (well, no, it's not bigger on the inside than the outside)
  • made with a nice back kick pleat
  • includes real leather elbow patches.

It's something that would be perfectly acceptable to wear for other occasions too (the Doctor suggests wearing it out on first dates or to job interviews, but I'll let you use your own judgement on that!). And it looks great with suspenders and bow tie!

Finding an Inexpensive Tweed Jacket for Your Doctor Who Costume

If you want something less expensive than the "official Doctor Who Jacket" but better quality than the inexpensive costumes you can find on Amazon, you may be able to find a suitable tweed jacket at a thrift shop or online.

Have images of the jacket on hand as you browse. You'll have to be patient as you look for the right style, color, and size, but you could be very pleased with what you find!

Searching for the Perfect Jacket at Thrift Stores or Online

During three episodes of the fifth series, the Doctor wears a fawn-colored Harris tweed jacket that's single breasted, with two-button closure and two flapped side pockets. When browsing online, these search terms (alone or used together) might return good results and help you refine your search:

  • "Tweed": Harris Tweed, Donegal Tweed, Shetland Tweed, or Bladen Tweed
  • "Herringbone" or "Wool"
  • "Blazer," "Sport Coat", or "Jacket"
  • Single-Breasted

Leather Elbow Patches for Your Doctor Who Jacket

You can add your own elbow patches to the tweed jacket. The Doctor's are brown leather, but you could also use faux-suede elbow patches.

Check out fabric and sewing stores in your area (support local businesses! And you can get your patches more quickly). But Amazon also has some good options.

And of Course You Need a Bow Tie!

Bow ties are cool with your tweed jacket!

This Doctor Who 11th Doctor's Bow Tie is the officially licensed bow tie replica from the show. It's adjustable for neck sizes 15 - 20", and it comes pre-tied, but with instructions for how to tie it if you want to adjust it for size. This high quality bow tie costs $26.99 from

You'll be very cool wearing this burgundy bow tie with your tweed jacket! You can still be cool, but wear a cheaper bow tie though.

Visit Bow Ties are Cool—Doctor Who Fashion for more ideas, and also for fezzes and stetsons (yes, the Doctor is also cool in a hat, and you can be too!).

A Simpler Solution: All-in-One Costume

If you don't have the time or inclination to search out a nifty jacket for your Doctor Who costume, and you just want something simple to pull together, you'll be able to find the whole costume on Amazon. It includes a tan and brown plaid jacket with elbow patches, white button shirt with black stripes, burgundy bow tie, and red suspenders. You add the jeans and the boots.

Of course you might as well add a sonic screwdriver while you're at it, and you're good to go.

Need a Fez and Bow Tie to Go With Your Jacket?

I've been enjoying the Doctor's quirky sense of fashion, and I think he's especially cool wearing his fez with his trademark bow tie. You can get your own Doctor Who Fez and Bowtie set, and wear them with your Eleventh Doctor jacket. The red fez looks just like the one The 11th Doctor wore, and the red bow tie is good quality.

One size fits most Whovians. Made of polyester. Gently spot clean these costume items.

Keeping It Simple with a Clever T-Shirt

What if you don't want the fuss of finding all the parts separately? Here's a casual, quick, and easy solution—a tee shirt with dress shirt, bow tie, and jacket printed on it. Just slip it on, grab your sonic screwdriver, and you're on your way! What a clever boy (or gal)!

Just think of the looks you'll get when you're out and about wearing your Doctor Who costume tee shirt! You know you want one!

@Fiorenza: I'll have to check out some of the older Doctor Who series -- I only started watching the newer series a few years ago. It seems that Tom Baker is a favorite of many Doctor Who fans. I hear less about Patrick Troughton, but I want to watch his incarnation of DW also.

@anonymous: Saks Fifth Avenue has something, but it's pricey...

I remember spending a long time sewing costumes for my kids :-) I hope your mother-in-law is successful :-) Best wishes!

@KarenHC: Thanks. I have looked at a few stores nothing yet. My mother in law is working on making one but I am not sure how it will turn out lol. Thanks for your help!

@anonymous: I wish I could help you out! I was reading online (after reading your comment) that the jacket is the hardest to find for a child's Doctor Who costume. Have you searched second hand clothing stores and eBay? (You probably have...) Best of luck! If you find a jacket, and feel like posting a photo of your son, I'd love to see it.

As I have a whole account dedicated to The Doctor this page really caught my eye. It's strange to think that the Tweed Jackets of my youth are now so popular again!

If you crochet or knit or sew well, or know someone who does, you can always see if they they will make you one. I made my red bow tie and am currently working on the fez. When I finish that, I'll make my blue bowtie. I mite even make my own suspenders if I can find suspended clips that I can use with crocheting...

      @anonymous: Hi Alex,

You could try on Amazon -- they're much cheaper there then at ThinkGeek, although not the "official" Doctor Who Bowtie. eBay might have something. Or if you have a decent menswear store nearby, like Men's Wearhouse, you might find something there.
