Downton Abbey Seasons Including 3 & 4

Updated on November 18, 2013

Downton Abbey the Third Series of the Popular UK TV Period Drama - A Great Gift for the Lady in Your Life

If you watch UK TV or PBS in the USA then you will be well aware that the third series of the period drama Downton Abbey has started. The First World War has finished and a good proportion of the older generation both upstairs and downstairs would like to see things revert to the way they were before the war. Unfortunately for them, that will never be, life in the big house has changed for ever and everyone now has to get used to new modern ways of behaving. The engagement between Matthew and Mary is on, but all is not peaceful at Downton Abbey. The usual stock of dramatic social changes, romantic intrigues, and personal crises are set to grip the Yorkshire country estate for what looks like a third and even more thrilling season than the previous two.

Social orders are changing in England following the war and many of the great houses are set to face an uphill battle to survive both socially and financially. Robert, Earl of Grantham, tries to stick to his duty to maintain Downton following the traditions he has learnt and maintained over many years, but Matthew, destined to marry Lady Mary, has different ideas and brings a middle classes attitude to estate management. Noses are set to be firmly pushed out of place as the beloved Downton enters into a battle of the classes, changing social standards and evolution into a modern entity that can exist and prosper in the changing times of the post war period.

Downton Abbey has won numerous awards since it's production - these include a Golden Globe Award and a Primetime Emmy Award. It was also recognized by Guinness World Records for being amongst the most critically acclaimed English television series for 2011. With 27 Primetime Emmy nominations it can claim the highest number of nominations in the history of the Awards for an international television program. It also has the highest viewing figures for a television series on both the British ITV channel and the American PBS channel, this makes it the most popular British costume drama series since the previous and highly rated series of Brideshead Revisited; which was another UK TV classic.

It is definitely the best I have ever seen. I enjoyed all the Jane Austen movies...but i have never followed a Masterpiece series like this one.

It is very good but doesn't beat the Thorn Birds if that counts as a period drama of course

@ReviewsfromSandy: It really is an excellent drama series, but it has now finished in the UK which is a bit of a double edged sword. On the good side, the DVD is now available, but on the bad side my wife hasn't quite got over it.

Interesting to think about how people in that time were on the cusp of so much change. As we are today. Some people embrace or accept change. And some resist.
