Draw Cartoon Ghosts for Halloween or Anytime

Updated on October 8, 2015

Draw Goofy Ghosts: Fun for Kids and Any Age

Drawing is fun and ghosts make a great subject to draw. First of all, no one really knows what a ghost looks like, so you can make your ghost any way you want.

Here are some ideas of what you might want to put in your ghost drawing. Ghosts are pretty easy and today we are looking at drawing funny ghosts. You can draw your ghost to look goofy and silly.

Drawing a ghost for a Halloween invitation or for a poster is fun. Making the ghost have a goofy expression helps set the mood for a fun Halloween party. Here are my tips for making your ghost drawing.

Start Drawing Ghosts with a Simple Shape, Then Add a Face to It - Two eyes and a mouth makes a face. The nose is optional

A very simple ghost with big black eyes, a curvy smile and two slashes for eyebrows. Sometimes the ghost doesn't even have a mouth just the white shape with eyes.

Change the Ghost's Eyes in the Drawing for a Different Look

This ghost looks surprised but happy.

Experiment with different parts of the ghost's face. Change the smile to a frown. Change the mouth to make the ghost look angry or puzzled.

Change the Ghost Drawing by Adding Arms - This ghost even has fingers

The main part of the ghost is still the basic bump for the head and raggedy bottom like an old bed sheet.

Draw Ghosts to Display in Your Yard

The ghosts shown on this page are drawn on big, flat pieces of styrofoam. You find these in packing cases when you buy things. Usually they go right into the recycling bin.

I drew ghosts on them so I could put them in my yard for Halloween decorations.

WARNING: Do not cut the styrofoam sheets. I did and it was a mess. The little styrofoam beads get free and stick to everything. You will be picking them out of the carpet and off the walls for ages.

How fun, besides drawing ghosts, you can add goblins and witches to your Halloween sketches. Make lots of spooky pictures with this book to inspire you.

Make a Whole Family of Cartoon Ghosts

Here's a mama ghost and two little ghosties. The little ones turned out sort of like a tadpole with a big head and tapering off to a small tail.

Using Online Drawing Sites

I tried out an online drawing site called Draw Island and it was fun making ghosts there. You can save them to your computer.

Notice How Giving the Ghost Teeth Makes It Look Funny

I wouldn't expect a ghost to have teeth. Afterall, what does a ghost eat that it needs teeth? The teeth are just to make it look goofy.

Give Your Ghost a Goofy Expression

The toothy grin adds some fun to the picture. This ghost has skinny arms and almost has legs. How do you like his hat?

Erasable Colored Pencil Set

Prismacolor Col-Erase Erasable Colored Pencils, 12-Count

Since ghosts are usually white in color, all you need is a black pencil or marker to draw the outline and the face. These colored pencils come in handy if you want to draw a scene around the ghost like houses or trees and bushes or people.

I like this set because it is erasable.

Another Example of a Ghost Cartoon - Add some background to your ghost drawing

There are lots of Halloween creatures you could add, but I decided on making easy bats. A curving line makes a path so it looks like the ghost is fleeing from the bats.

I added pink for his tongue (do ghosts have tongues?). Some lines around the bats show movement and some lines behind the ghost are a way to make it look like it is going forward.

You can draw on almost anything. I used flat pieces of styrofoam for the ghosts on this page. You can use scrap paper like the backs of old envelopes or you can get some nice drawing paper like this.

Ideas for a Silly Ghost Drawing

Remember that you can make the ghost any shape you want. You can give it a pointed head or a rounded one. It can fly and has hands or leave off the hands.

When drawing a cartoon, make the eyes bigger than usual for the face. The same is true for the mouth. See how the ghosts on this page have more head than body? That gives it the cartoon look.

Add Words to Your Ghost Cartoon - A simple BOO will do or put something clever

You can add a talk bubble or give the ghost a sign to hold like this one.

Love those ghosts! I enjoy drawing too but don't do it nearly often enough. I'd love to find out about websites where you can create digital drawings you can then use on your websites (and hubs etc). Do you know anything like that?

      Thanks!

I would love to be able to draw, its always been something I've wanted to be good at. Unfortunately I think I could have all the training in the world and still only be able to draw stickmen.

Mind you judging by what passes for modern art these days, maybe I have a chance at a few styles after all...
