Origin Of Easter Bunny & Easter Traditions

Updated on September 3, 2013

What Is The Origin of Easter Bunny

It's one of the most oft asked questions as people seek to find out the origin of Easter Bunny and the traditions of Easter that many cultures have.

We all love Easter. Its an opportunity for families to spend time together, for kids to have fun searching for hidden eggs and candy bunnies. Families spend time coloring Easter eggs, creating baskets and other Easter crafts, and of course enjoying a large family meal. As adults we know the true meaning of Easter and that it has its roots based in the rising of Jesus Christ 3 days after his death by crucifixion. Many religions celebrate Easter, and many of those who don't also celebrate Easter in one form or another, even if just a joyful time for their children.

But more to the point of this article, how did the holiday known as Easter come to have association with bunnies, eggs and gift baskets? Of course much of what we now know of the holiday has been driven by commercial interests, but indeed children love the special time that Easter brings to their lives once a year.

The egg almost certainly became an icon of this holiday for its symbolism of new life, of life within even when something seems dormant and innate. Ancient texts and inscriptions reveal that as far back as 2,500 years people painted or decorated eggs to present to their King or ruler, as a form of tribute. But what, pray tell, does that have to do with rabbits!? The Easter Bunny? According to Wikipedia, Easter bunnies came about through the confusion created by folklore being handed down hundreds of years. They write "There are good grounds for the association between hares (later termed Easter bunnies) and eggs, through folklore confusion between hares' forms (where they raise their young) and plovers' nests." Apparently at some point there was confusion about the eggs these birds laid and the nearby hares. In this article we'll look deeper into the Origin of Easter Bunny.

The Easter Basket - A Tradition That Lives On

Easter Bunny Lays Eggs?

According to the earliest legends surrounding the Easter Basket and eggs, young German children would make a "nest" in their clothing, or hat, the night before Easter and the "Osterhas" (literally Easter Hare), a.k.a. Easter Bunny, would bring good children gifts and/or treats, often colored or candied eggs and place them in the nest. Earlier traditions have, for various reasons from religious to superstition, local peoples making colored eggs. Some to usher in a bountiful new season of crops as the egg represents fertility, and others to pay homage their King or ruler with the beautifully decorated eggs. Easter bunnies are a relatively modern addition to the historical celebration of the Christian Easter Sunday.

Regardless of the folklore surrounding the tradition, for us all that matters is that we do it. Most of us had our share of Easter baskets and they always range in size, material (plastic and wood), color and contents. Traditional Easter baskets are nice, for sure, but I also like the nostalgia of the old time Easter gifts, candies and boxes. Do you remember candy that you ate when you were a kid, candy like Wax Lips, Ice Cube Chocolates, Bonomo's Turkish Taffy, Candy Buttons on paper tape, Wax Syrup Bottles, Sky Bars, Zagnut, Necco Wafers, Teaberry Gum, or Chick-o-Sticks? A company called Old Time Candy has those and many more, and offers Free Shipping to APO, FPO boxes".

While I love Old Time Candy all the time, they make a really cool and memorable Easter Basket in a Box, and my favorite, the Easter Decade Boxes. Of course they have Easter Gift Baskets, candies and other really cool items. But the Easter Decade

Boxes steal the show. You can get a 2 or 4 lbs box of Easter treats from the 1950's, 60s, 70s, 80s or All Decades. The 4 lb decade box is jammed with over 70 of your old time favorites. And you can get the box personalized with a background you select and a personal message, both printed on card stock and attached to the gift box.

Easter Traditions

For many people Easter is a very spiritual time, and for others is merely a fun-filled holiday with Easter Bunnies, candy, food and fun! Around the globe there are many traditions, for example in many towns across Colombia they celebrate with the Procession with "El Resucitado" (The Risen Lord) in which the locals carry statues of various biblical figures through the streets with fireworks, marching bands and people singing, all giving praise for the resurrection. Whatever Easter means to you, I'm sure you have some family traditions that you really look forward to. For me, the great gathering that our family always has on Easter is really special... hiding the Easter eggs for the children to search for, a large meal and fun and games with lots of laughter.

If your family is religious or you would like to make the Easter celebration more traditional you may try creating a special time with your family by planting trees to celebrate new life and a new beginning, or make up some other way to pay tribute to the special gift of life that Easter represents to Christians. Some people celebrate Palm Sunday (the week before Easter) in a special way like this. Palm Sunday represents the week before Jesus was crucified, when he entered Jerusalem.
