Family Costumes for Halloween

Updated on July 2, 2014

Red Riding Hood Characters for the Whole Family

Involve the whole family in a theme costumed event this Halloween, grandparents included.

A fun activity like dressing up together creates a strong memory in even the smallest child and all the family will treasure this special time.

Whether the costumes are cheap or costly, purchased or homemade, simple or sophisticated, dressing up as a family is an experience everyone will remember long after the last apple has been bobbed.

A great way to cover family members of any age (or of any shape) is to choose costumes that tell a story. Pick a fairy tale and have kids, parents and grandparents dress up as different characters from the fairy story.

One popular fairy tale is Little Red Riding Hood, even the smallest child knows that story.

Make the Costumes at Home

Dressing up the whole family as characters from Red Riding Hood can be done by using clothing you already have, or purchasing a few items at a second hand store.

Grandma wears a long flannelette or heavy cotton nightdress with a mob cap. Female adult characters wear long skirts and shawls with caps and buckled shoes.

The woodcutter and any other adult male characters wear long sleeved shirts, pants tucked into woolen socks and buckles on their shoes.

Make shoe buckles out of cardboard. Cut the cardboard into squares, cut out square centres and wrap the remaining frames in tin foil.

Basic Costume for Little Red Riding Hood

Little Red Riding Hood is defined by her cape, so you have a wide range of options for the rest of her costume.

She wears a knee-length smock type dress or a knee length flared skirt. Usually her skirt is red, or a red gingham print.

You can quickly run up a skirt from a circular tablecloth by cutting a hole in the centre for the waist and threading elastic through.

Her blouse is a standard white, if possible with puffy sleeves. A broad belt separates the blouse from the skirt.

Finish with black or white tights.

Don't forget the basket! She is carrying some goodies for her grandmother in a small basket.

Many of her costume ideas are fine for the various characters in Little Red Riding Hood.

You can always buy costumes

Making the costumes as a family is a wonderful activity but it's not always possible.

If you don't have the time to make the costumes at home, there's a wide range of ready-made costumes you can purchase.

Nice lens. Unfortunately I think the days of fairy tale Halloween costumes are fading and being replaced with odd stuff I can't even identify!
