Ideas For Fashionable Womens Halloween Costumes

Updated on September 11, 2014

Can Costumes Be Fashionable?

It seems quite a common misconception that Halloween costumes are either expensive or unfashionable. This really isn't the case. Certainly in my time working within the party industry I have found fashions and trends have changed vastly. In my eleven years of working within the costume industry here in the UK I have had the opportunity to attend the Halloween and party expo in the States and really get to discover the crux of the market and have viewed first hand how much more fashionable Halloween costumes are today than say, a decade ago.

In this country, one of the biggest Halloween outfit suppliers is Smiffy's of Gainsbrough. They really have transformed themselves from a novelty outlet that tended to offer items such as fun snaps and exploding cigarettes, not to mention their somewhat dowdy in appearance nurses costumes and really grown to offer the consumer luxurious and fashionable outfits for Halloween. In particular, the female gender has benefited most because of Smiffy's transformation, as they have filled a gap in the UK market and begun to create some truly inspirational costumes for the gals to throw on come Halloween.

Over in America, the market leaders of women's fashionable Halloween costumes is still Leg Avenue. Although, in recent years, I have noticed that their crown has been questioned since the bar has been raised by the likes of Be Wicked, Party King and Forplay costumes. All of which I consider to be above and beyond the competition.

Back home, a new manufacturer called Orion costumes has began to attempt to do something a little different. Are they creating cheap yet fashionable products? You can be the judge. Is the UK behind America as far as fashionable fancy dress is concerned, I'd say yes, but only just at this stage.

In this lens I'm going to take a look at costumes ideas and suggestions that are both fashionable and fun to wear come October.

Your budget affecting how fashionable you're going to look? You can usually find a bargain or two on eBay.

Browse For Fashionable Costumes

Browse, browse, browse!

There are plenty of costumes available that will complement your body shape and size it's just a matter of discovering them. If you are the type of person that doesn't have hours to invest in creating your own Halloween costumes or you simply can't handle your way around a sowing machine, your best option is to find yourself a nice costume. Here's some tips for getting the best deal:

1. Shop off season. Okay, I know that this isn't the most realistic expectation, but, if you were to select your Halloween costume just after Halloween or at the start of the year you may well find that many online costume retailer have sales and offers. Check in the UK and in the States. Both tend to have big sales.

2. Buy early. Do not leave it until the last minute. It's the worst thing that you can do. Stock levels will be dwindling and you may not be able to have your first choice of costume. Be prepared, get in early and you be will happy. Think of what you could have the first week of October compared to two days before Halloween!

3. Don't panic buy. Stop and consider if this costume that you like is the best for you. Check the sizing and shop around. Can you get a better price? Check shops both offline and on. Again, it all falls down to being prepared.

Ideas For Unique Outfits - For when you're dress shopping

  • Devil - If you find wearing classic style outfits not to be very appealing why not pick out either a smart red dress that you already own or splash out on something that would make you feel comfortable? I find sequins and pleated skirts make a superb substitute. All you need to do is accessorize to make your red dress into a devil outfit. Add a set of devil horns and a trident and you have effectively made yourself into a chic devil. The sizing of your dress will be better and you can reuse it again and again for dinner parties and nights out.
  • Mummy - A spooky mummy on Halloween is a great idea, it's a deviation away from your usual vampires and ghouls. Again, dodge the costume shops and head out to your favourite store and select yourself a nice short white or cream coloured dress. I have to confess I have a mesh bandage dress style in mind. You can take something as simple as a couple of bandages and make yourself a ties that can adorn your arms, hanging down to give you a truly unique, yet classy look. Consider using an 'Eye of Horus' style makeup when doing your eyes, it'll look awesome! See the Amazon window below for examples of bandage dress that are readily available.
  • Witch - Black is a very slimming colour, this is a rudimentary fashion tip that you'll pick up watching Gok Wan or who ever is on TV that week. I find, that a simple black dress with perhaps a pencil skirt and a Basque or bodice with halter-neck top can look amazing. If you think about it, with the addition of the correct makeup and a witches hat you will blow away anyone that has purchased a prepared costume. In the UK House Of Fraser and Dorothy Perkins have perfect items to pull off this look. You just need to start looking at dresses with a different eye. Imagine the hat on top, perhaps with a thick black belt. Admittedly, you're going to be paying a bit more but you will be in vogue, fact.

Potential Costume Dresses From Amazon

I've taken a look to find which dresses match the criteria mentioned in my previous list. Here's one dress for each of the devil, mummy and witch suggestions. Close your eyes and picture what you would look like in each with accessories. Your imagination is they key. You can be more fashionable come Halloween night!
