Free Printable Halloween Word Search Puzzles for Kids and Adults

Updated on September 5, 2014

Free printable Halloween word searches are fun for the entire family!

When I was a child, one of my preferred pass-times was to sit down with my word search and crossword puzzle book and whittle away the hours, searching for the terms. Those days have long gone, but I still enjoy doing and creating a good word puzzle every now and then, especially since I have begun teaching young children and adults English as a second language. Some of the most popular word search puzzles out there are built around a holiday theme such as Christmas, Halloween or Thanksgiving. In this article, I'd like to share with you a number of free printable Halloween word searches for people of all ages. For easy browsing, I have divided the word searches into three sections: word searches for young kids, older kids and adults. I have even created three word searches myself which you can download and use yourself, with your kids, or in the classroom.

Word Searches for Young Kids

What are the benefits of word searches for young children?

Word searches for young children are a wonderful way of providing kids with the incentive to read new words. They can improve a child's literacy skills while increasing his or her vocabulary. The best thing about word searches is that children regard them as a game as opposed to work. By doing a word search, they are expanding their knowledge without realising it, and having fun all the while. If your child has only just begun reading, you will want to start him or her off with a very simple word search consisting of a handful of easy words. The word search itself should be no larger than 10 by 10 letters. As your child gains more confidence in reading, you can gradually introduce more challenging word searches consisting of a mix of new and old words.

Word Searches for Older Kids

What are the benefits of word searches for older children?

Word searches for older children are just as beneficial as they are for young children for the same reasons explained above. While your child may already be quite a fluent reader, he will never stop learning new words. Word searches are a fun and easy way to foster a growing vocabulary, not only in kids but in any age group. Moreover, word searches will help your growing child confront difficult spellings. Just think of Halloween words with irregular spellings such as tombstone and werewolf. With the help of word searches, you child will grow familiar with the many ways of spelling out the same sound.

Word Searches for Adults

What are the benefits of word searches for adults?

Interestingly, word searches are seen very much as word games for children. Adults may not feel that they are as challenging as a crossword or a game of Scrabble. However, this is a mistaken way of approaching word searches. Indeed, they can often be quite stimulating for the mind if designed in the right way. The best kind of word search for adults will include many difficult words that the adult player may have to look up in the dictionary. It will have words that appear in all directions, not just horizontally and vertically. There should also be a number of 'trick words' present - that is, a succession of 2-4 letters that appear to compose the beginning of one of the vocabulary items but is not the actual word. For adult English as a second language learners, on the other hand, the word search should contain a large variety of vocabulary items at the level of the learner's English. In a beginner's word search, you should not include difficult words like "ghastly" and "spine-tingling" just as you would avoid putting in too many words like "cat" and "bat" in an advanced learner's word search.

I tried to print out the word search to use for a classroom Halloween party activity - and the banner ads with sexy girls printed out. So I tried to print without, and it was very tiny. Never mind, I'll find them on another site!!!
