Five Fun Retro Scooter Designs for Boys and Girls

Updated on August 30, 2017

Fun Retro Scooters for Boys and Girls

Did you love to play outside as child? I know I sure did. I loved to be outdoors riding bikes, scooters, big wheels, playing on the swingset, climbing name it. If the weather was nice, I was outside playing...(as long as I wasn't in school, of course).

These retro styled scooters bring back memories of my childhood, and they make perfect christmas gifts, birthday gifts, or for another special occasion.

The intro photo can be purchased from (see larger pic and link below).

A Brief History of Scooters

They've been around a while...

The first scooters were child's vehicles that have been dated before the 1920's. Although people could buy manufactured scooters for children in stores at the time, the first scooters were generally not something every child could afford. However, as we have seen many times, children were very resourceful and began to make their own scooters out of used or discarded items they found, such as old produce crates.

Today, with the manufacturing technology available, scooters are much more affordable and come in many styles and models.

Scooter Benefits

What is so great about having a retro scooter? Besides the cool styling, it has two back wheels which are great for little kids who are learning to be big kids. It is great exercise, and as long as your kids like to play outdoors, then this scooter should be a home run in the gift department!

The only trouble I would have is picking the color, because they come in so many outstanding and beautiful colors, (unlike when I was a child, almost everything seemed to be red)!

Scooter Safety

The Attorney General and Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) offer some safety guidelines to help keep children safe while riding their scooters.

  • Always wear a helmet with a tag that says it meets the CPSC safety standard, and don't forget to wear elbow and knee pads.
  • Only ride scooters on smooth, paved surfaces where there isn't any traffic, and be sure the area is free of debris such as rocks, sticks, etc., that could cause an accident.
  • Do not allow children to ride a scooter at night.
  • Replace a helmet if it has received a blow from a crash. The helmet may look ok on the outside, but the foam on the inside is only designed to protect one time. It may not protect in the event of a second crash.

Helmets are VERY Important!

Please measure!

It is very important to measure your child's head carefully when selecting a helmet, as proper fit is crucial to get the best protection, and always look for the CPSC sticker inside the helmet.

This helmet would be great for boys!

This pink helmet is perfect for girls, and it meets the CPSC safety standards as well.

Elbow and Knee Pads for Boys and Girls

These elbow and knee pads are like the ones my two oldest daughters used when they were little. They offered a lot of protection against skinned knees and scraped elbows! My daughters would fall a lot, and this safety gear was great for them.
