5 Unique Christmas Photo Ideas for Your Family Holiday Card

Looking for an unusual family photo for your annual holiday card? Take a look at these 5 funny Christmas photo ideas for some inspiration. These are some of the funniest ideas from around the web. Each one includes a few tips on how to create a photo similar to the one you see here, as well as some ideas how might use the idea to create a slightly different photo based on the same concept. The hardest thing might be deciding which funny Christmas photo idea to use!

Funny Christmas Photo Idea #1

Dear Santa, we can explain...

I love this family photo from Summertime Designs. Apparently this photo has become quite popular after being pinned on Pinterest (which is where I found it), and the mother has been inundated with emails about how she did it. She provides a brief overview of the Photoshop tricks she used and then offers a look at the unretouched "before" shot of the family on this page.

Even if you're not proficient in Photoshop, you'll want to check our her blog for more information. Then take a look at the untouched image for some ideas. You could create a similar background effect by using adhesive numbers on a wall similar to the one they used. To finish the card, you could upload the image to a site such as Zazzle and create your own card by using their tools to add the "Dear Santa" text.

Another idea is to go with the "We can explain" theme and show everyone in handcuffs, in front of the police station, etc.

JOY to the world

What I like about this image from Coolest Christmas Holidays is that you don't need any special editing skills to create the effect. All you need is four people and some flexibility.

To make the images more striking, you might want to have everyone in the family wear the same colors (for instance, red or green shirt with jeans) or you might want to get a holiday-themed sheet or blanket and lay it on the floor before you take your photos.

Then all you need to do is find a site that offers cards with 3-photo layouts that will work for your JOY message.

Get all wrapped up

Here's another funny photo idea that anyone could do. Simply get some boxes, wrap them in Christmas paper and put them on.

For a bit of variation, you could have one giant box in front that the parents could be unwrapping as the kids pop out. Or if you want to add some costumes, you could have everyone in gift boxes with one person dressed as up as Santa Claus or an elf.

I saw this photo at several sites around the web, but believe the original photo was taken by and is copyright by krup1000 on Flickr.

Texting family

How many of us could send Christmas cards this year with a photo like this?? I laughed when I saw this image because there are definitely times during the day when my family looks pretty darn close to what you see in this photo.

If your family is addicted to electronics, you could stage a similar photo with everyone holding their cell phone, tablet, laptop or whatever devices you can't live without.

I tracked this photo back to Huffington Post, who credits it to a file uploaded on Reddit. Comments say the card was created by Bill Lobley of www.crazydinnerparty.com.

Funny Christmas Photo Ideas #5

Reflection in an ornament

This awesome example of a creative family photo comes from a whole page of creative Christmas photo ideas on CameraSim.

The page shows 11 years of one family's fun holiday cards. Some of them would require more Photoshop skills than many people probably possess, but a few - like this one from Christmas 2002 - should provide inspiration for fun photos that you anyone could create without too many special skills required. The author indicates this photo was actually taken with good ol' fashioned film and the only Photoshop work was to remove the camera from the image.

To shoot a photo like this, you can place your camera on a tripod behind everyone one and then set the timer so you can get in the frame and hold the ornament facing the camera.

Photoshop Elements - Photo editing software for your holiday cards

If you want to attempt to create a photo like some of those shown here, Photoshop Elements can help. This is the consumer-level version of the extremely popular (and expensive) Photoshop program used by professionals. Elements is easy to learn and to use, and can help make all of your pictures look better.

Lots of great ideas. I like the Brady Bunch idea when you can't get all the family together for a photo.

Idea #4 made me laugh out loud! And Photoshop (not Elements) is my favorite software, hands down! Fun lens. Thanks.

@Frischy: You're right - you could definitely do it with two people. I never thought of that!

I love the JOY card, with the family forming the letters with their bodies. It could be done with only two people as well. Would be great for newlyweds!
