Best Gifts for 13 Year Old Boys

Updated on December 22, 2015

What to Buy a 13 Year Old Boy?

13 year old teenage boys can be difficult to buy for. I should know, I have two teenage cousins I buy gifts for every year and when I think about what to get, it seems like a long time ago when I was a 13 year old boy myself. So I've done some research into what they might like as well as paid attention to what they have asked for and played with at Christmas and on birthdays. And below is a gift guide based on my findings.

Obviously what you buy a 13 year old boy will vary greatly depending on what they're interested in. Therefore, you might not agree with all of them but I'm sure there will be something the 13 year old you know would want on this list somewhere! You could even just let them pick...

I've tried to keep in mind that different budgets will be reading this so I'll include a spectrum of different costs so hopefully there be something for everybody.

Tech and Gadget Gifts

If you have quite a big budget and they haven't already got one, an ipad is a gift that most 13 year old boys will not be disappointed with. If an ipad is a bit out of your price range, consider a mini ipad or other tablet instead. 7 inch tablets are extremely portable too, so great for taking to friends and relative houses or on your travels to entertain a teenager

There are also lots of other tech gifts that may appeal, some a lot cheaper. Check out a couple of ideas below.

Boogie Board 8.5-Inch LCD Writing Tablet, Cyan (PT01085CYAA0002)
Boogie Board 8.5-Inch LCD Writing Tablet, Cyan (PT01085CYAA0002)

The boogie board is a writing tablet. You can use it to write lists, workout homework questions, leave messages, doodle and more! You erase your image with the touch of a button. Great for replacing paper and post it notes etc. It's extremely thin (1/8") so portable. It could be taken in a backpack to school, used in the car, used to help with homework at home or doodle!

GoPro HERO
GoPro HERO

The Go Pro hero is a really cool video camera that's great for filming action and adventure as well as everyday life.

It's waterproof and durable so it can be used to film when going swimming and snorkelling. It can be used with a headstrap to film adventures when going skateboarding, cycling, hiking or for more extreme adventures or sports.

The Go Pro Hero is the least expensive and earliest edition in their product range. If you have a bigger budget, it's also worth checking out the Go Pro 4. This is the latest Go Pro camera which also features wifi and bluetooth.

Music Gifts

If the 13 year old boy you know likes music there are lots of great gift ideas. They range from tickets to see their favorite band, itunes vouchers, headphones, speakers for their room, or bluetooth speakers. If they like to play music you can get them song sheets with music to play from their favorite artists. You can also get beginner DJ sets or beginner guitar sets with everything you need to play music.

Check out the bluetooth speakers featured below.

Bose SoundLink Color Bluetooth Speaker (Blue)
Bose SoundLink Color Bluetooth Speaker (Blue)

If they really love listening to music and would appreciate a speaker which gives high quality sound than consider getting a Bose bluetooth speaker.

It will stream music from a smartphone, tablet or other bluetooth device. It's great to listening to music in a bedroom but is super portable so can easily be taken to other areas of the house, to a friend's house or anywhere where he will take care of it and wants to listen to music.

A charge will last up to 8 hours.

The Bose speaker offers really high quality sound and is at the higher end of the market for bluetooth speakers. You can get bluetooth speakers from as little a $20 if you would rather not spend too much.

Fun Books for 13 Year Old Boys

Many people would rule out buying a book for a teenage boy but think a little outside the box and there are lots of books that will appeal. My wife used to work in a library with teenagers and many of the teenage boys would pick up visual, fun and factual books. They loved graphic novels, manga and books on sports were also popular. Check out the Encycopeida of Immaturity below which appeals to a teens sense of humor (and some adults as well!)

Not every 13 year old boy likes to read but many do. If you're looking for books, you could also check out this article on best books for teenage boys or the best books for 13 year olds.

Football, soccer, skateboard, basketball hoops and balls, scooters and the ripstik castor board below.

Cool retro 70s style penny boards are also popular with kids who like skating at the moment.

Or what about a starter bow and arrow kit.

Paintball Guns

Some people my argue with Paintball guns as a choice of gift for a 13th year old but statistically the chances of injury are low and the majority of them are injuries that you would associate with any contact sport. Played within a trusted and well run site paint-balling can be extremely fun and a great way to keep fit. Kids just loves it and it gets them out in the fresh air and exercising. Paint-balling can also be very sociable and you probably know already if any of his friends are doing it. Or you can check out this site that reviews paint balling sites across America USA Paintball Fields

Games

As well as video games, don't rule out other board, electronic and puzzle games. They can be fun to do on your own and share with others.

It's quite addictive and great for travel - you can easily take it anywhere.

Stuff for Their Room

It's very likely that teenage boys will spend a lot of time in their room.

Things that they can use to personalize their environment (lamps, pictures, posters, etc) will often make appreciated gifts. Other ideas are practical gifts such as alarm clocks and desk lamps or what about a mini fridge? Have your own personal fridge in your room! It's great for when friends come round and you can hand out the cold drinks. Great for storing your supplies when you are studying too.

Here is another practical gift for their bedroom.

My 13 year old son was a tough one this year! I don't know about the boys this was written for, but my son, as much as he loves to sit inside and play video games, he also likes to be out riding around on his long board with his friend. I gave him a credit at 'Bustin Boards' where he can design his own skateboard. Other family members did that as well because the deck the trucks, the bearings and the wheels can all be purchased separately so he can customize his own board. The staff at BC Surf and Sport were also helpful in purchasing extra parts and tools for working on his long board. Then I bought him a Kryptonics Fly Box which is a ramp for skateboards, bikes, etc. I also got him 'Beats' by Dr. Dre, but they are Very expensive. I gave him iTunes gift cards for his iPad and iPhone. There are also 'apptivity' things for these items i.e., I got him a remote controlled helicopter that he controls from his iPad. And the teens are right, MW3 is way out of date. COD Black Ops II or MW4. My son also graduated to his own t.v in his room so that when friends come over, they can take the xbox 360 into his room so they won't be bothered. Also, Turtle Beach makes headphones for the COD and MW that are a really cool gift idea... No 'groovy lava lamps'! Go for a black light and buy paint that will glow under it that is available at any 'home store' so that 13 year old can customize his space... And at 13, it's time to start learning that money management. I got my son one of those prepaid cards you can buy practically anywhere and they send him/her a 'debit card' with their name on it, but they can only spend what you put on it, i.e., allowances, birthdays, summer jobs, etc. And other people can load onto the card as well (out of town family- no more sending cash in a card), and they come with the same security if lost or stolen as most major credit cards. Just putting in my 2 cents. The 13 year old's will probably disagree with me too! ; )

@anonymous: I disagree strongy. I am 13 and I hate the systems that you listed as "Better". Parents, if you would Not want to degrade your childrens minds until there is nothing left but the games on these consoles, choose the Wii. Of course, there are certain kinds of kids. Some care for Wii games which focus on motion and color, while the PS3 and Xbox 360 focus on mind numbing games that focus on war with garbage sideplots. Both PS3 and Xbox 360's also require PAID feautures such as internet and points to buy certain games. Keep it simple parents, get your children a Wii for their special occasion.

Im 13 and i think if your kid is into COD or MW2 and still enjoys being out side, I think they will enjoy a BB gun. Im this way and i think it's a great way to have fun, and get outside. Also when im angry at my parents or my sister, its a great stress reliever. I have found that one of the best BB gun companies is Crosman. They have sturdy built guns with all the safety features that you parents like. So this year get your kid a BB gun.

Great list! Could you consider adding our new basketball product? It is called the iC3 Basketball Shot Trainer. It's the only at-home basketball trainer that combines high-reps with proper arc shooting for improved performance in the shortest amount of time. And, the kids love it! They get to shoot, shoot and keep shooting! Great gift idea for a 13 year old basketball kid!

Seriously kids need to get their freaking minds out of the gutter when it comes to games! CoD is so unoriginal and features the most overdone and pointless gameplay. Try games like Batman, Mario, Uncharted, and InFamous. If you like it, then it's fine, but don't go ripping on other games! After all, the whole point of gaming is to have FUN!

Yeah I'm 13 and some of these are way to young for 13 year olds the only good thing was the paintball. They should have skate boards and surfboards because that's what 13 year olds want!

I am 13 and one of the top things on my list is a penny board I would also say don't get a 13 year old a wii unless the ask for it. Similar to paintball airsoft is a very fun sport. For any 13 year olds with iPhones a pebble watch might be a good idea. Depending on the kid I nice pair of sunglasses might be a good idea I have recently taken up an obsession with oakleys.

I Am 13 and of all things the last thing i would be exited for is a flashing frisbee. get the kid some board games like catan or risk. maybe if they're mature enough some stephen king books. video games are also cool and i wouldn't shy away from the more intellectual ones even if they are more inappropriate. and if you are a good person never let your kids get COD.

I'm 13 and I am very artistic. I don't know many kids my age that would enjoy getting art supplies, but some really enjoy it. Chalk pastels are very fun to experiment with and i've always been a big fan of just the plain ol' crayon and marker.

Also I still like the Wii. It honestly depends on who you are buying for. I've never really enjoyed warfare games which are mostly on the Xbox 360 and Playstation3 not the wii. I've always liked Mario games such as Mario Party 8 and Mario Kart. I also still own the game cube which i play a lot. DON'T GET THAT FOR YOUR KIDS. I am a rare exception because I've played it since I was little and my 15 year old brother has too.

Im 13 and im very athletic and I love soccer. I really recommend a longboard or penny board to a boy or girl the age of 10-16. If your child likes to ride a bike or walk to a friends house, DEFINITELY get him/her an penny/long board.
