Updated on October 13, 2015

Birthday and Chirstmas Gift Ideas for 1st Graders

These 1st grade gift ideas are great for birthdays or Christmas. First graders and six year olds are explorers and are looking for toys to keep them busy. Their attention span is shorter and so toys that are colorful and with multiple things to do are best. If you don't find what you are looking for here, check out my 2nd Grade Gift Ideas.

As my four kids went into first grade and turned six, my wife and I were always looking for toys, books, and gifts that would encourage each child to learn and explore the world. And each child had a different interest, my youngest loves animals, my son loves sports, whereas my two oldest loved books.

What are you looking to buy a 1st grader?

Best Tablets for Six Year Olds

As tablets become more mainstream each year, six year olds are now interested in using and having a tablet. There are a few tablets for 1st graders that make sense. 1st graders are already past a tablet that looks like a toddler toy. So, finding a cheap tablet that they can call there own is a must. Look for something inexpensive but looks and functions like an Ipad.

Art and Craft Sets for first grade girls

I'm not sure about your house, but in my house, friendship bracelets are all the rage. On a rainy day break out the bead sets and let the girls make their own bracelets and necklaces. What type of beads should you buy? The shinier the better and beads with letters so you can write names and other sayings within the artwork.

And when they are done with the beads, art sets for creating that special note is always great. Whether they are drawing or creating birthday cards, 1st graders love being creative.

Rubber band bracelets have been hot lately, it seems everyone is making these friendship bracelets.

Gross Gift for a Six Year Old Boy - Minions and Ugglys

So I'm walking through a toy store the other day, and here these sounds coming from a stand in the middle of the isle. Gross sounds only a boy would love. Here it is the inappropriate toy, the Ugglys. You'll have to read the description for yourself, but I couldn't stop laughing for days as I thought of my nephew playing with this and my sister-in-law giving me dirty looks.

And if that doesn't drive her crazy, with the Minions from Despicable Me, and what would be better than Stuart with his fart dart launcher.

First Grade Girls Love Animal Toys

My daughter is an animal person, so any toy that deals with dogs, cats, or other animals is an instant hit in our house. When she was in 1st grade (and the years beyond), she loved the littlest Pet Shop is it included a lot of different kinds of animals.

HexBugs - Best Gift for Six Year Olds

Hexbugs come in many colors and types of bugs including crabs, nanos, ants, inchworm, and scarabs.

Legos for 1st grade Boys

Actually, these are great toys for both boys and girls. Building toys allow a child's imagination to create and explore. Legos are a great way to get a child to be patient and learn to read directions. And as they get good at building legos, there is always another bigger lego set out there.

Boxing Gloves for 1st Graders

Here's a new take on the jumbo boxing gloves inspired by the Disney movie Wreck It Ralph. Wreck It Ralph fists will be a hit at Christmas for your 1st grade boy and year 35 year old kid.

Educational Gifts for first graders

I put educational gifts at the top of the list as I love finding presents that allow children to learn and have fun at the same time. With the proliferation of electronic toys, it's not hard to find a math game for a computer, or an app for an ipad that allows growth in math, reading, history, or science.

I would stay away from any type of reading programs. To increase a child's reading ability, buy them a book.

Fijit Friends

Fijit Friends is the latest interactive toy. Fijit has four versions and are named Willa (mauve), Sage (yellow), Serafina (pink), and Logan (blue). Each friend also has an accessory pack. Fijit reacts to your voice, dances to music. and lights up.

Race Cars for Six Year Old Girls - Wreck It Ralph Racers

Here's a great toy based on the new Disney movie Wreck It Ralph. The 12 Sugar Rush Racers come in many colorful styles that are different than your classic race cars for boys.

Collect all 12: Vanellope Von Schweetz, King Candy, Gloyd Orangeboar, Taffyta Muttonfudge, Candle Head, Rancis Fluggerbutter, Snowanna Rainbeau, Minty Zaki, Swizzle "The Swizz" Malarkey, Jubileena Bing-Bing, Crumbelina DiCarmello, Adorabeezle Winterpop

Board Games for first graders

When picking a board game, it's a good idea to pick something that helps them think and complements school. Games with numbers or Games with money are great ways to get kids to relate the things they are learning in school. Strategy games are good for getting kids to start thinking logically.

Super Friends Imaginext for six year boys

With the release of Marvel's Avengers, the Super Friends are gaining speed again. And if you are an Imaginext fan, the Bat Cave is just up your alley. Not to mention Joker's hideout and all the different vehicles and figures including Batman and Robin and the Green Lantern. And let's not forget all the villans including Joker, Penguin, Two-Face, and Mr. Freeze.

What are you getting your six year old for their birthday or Christmas this year?
