Gifts for Geek Girls

Updated on November 29, 2013

Top 10 Gifts for the Geek Girl on Your List

It's that time of year again when we put on our shopping faces, venture out into the world of malls, websites, and little stores no one has heard of, stand in lines, face rain, snow and sleet, and risk carpel tunnel syndrome, all on the quest to find that perfect gift. This can be a difficult enough task at the best of times, but if you have a Geek Girl on your list, you may find completing your quest even more of a challenge. While gift cards are a good fall back plan for almost anyone, if you're looking for something a little more personal and thoughtful for the Geek Girl on your list, you've come to the right place.

Welcome to my list of the Top 10 Gifts for the Geek Girls!

1. A T-Shirt - Geek Girls like t-shirts too!

Pretty much every fandom has its t-shirts, and Geek Girls do like t-shirts too! Have a wander through the t-shirts available for your Geek Girl's fandom, and pick the one that you know she'll love!

2. An eReader

If your Geek Girl is an avid reader, consider getting her a dedicated eReader. No distractions from email chimes or other notifications, a gentle on the eyes e-ink display, weeks of battery-life instead of hours and no issues with reading in the sunlight! I have both an eReader and a tablet, and while the page turning graphics on my tablet are nifty, I prefer my eReader when settling in to read a book. The Kindle Paperwhite 3G also includes FREE 3G access to browse, buy and download books from just about anywhere!

NOTE though! If your Geek Girl is a reader of graphic novels, then you'll want a tablet - e-ink is black and white and not suitable for graphic novels. If this is your case, try the Kindle fire instead.

3. A Battery Backup Charger - If James Bond were a Geek Girl, he'd totally have this...

A 3000mAh portable external battery backup charger the size of lipstick! The Anker® Astro Mini 3000mAh Portable External Battery Backup Charger is a great size for keeping in a purse or even a pocket. Great for charging up your iPhone or similar sized phone when its running low. Apparently, it can provide ~1.5 charges to a hungry iPhone. I have an older Samsung Galaxy Ace and am very curious how my phone would fare with this charger. So curious in fact that this is now on my own Christmas wish list!

If the Geek Girl on your list is not a fan of pink, you'll be glad to know the charger comes in a few other colors too; blue, silver, black. There are a couple of similar products out there but with slightly less power, and they're not as pretty either.. not that I'm influenced by shiny surfaces or pretty colors .. nope, not me, got my feet firmly planted on the groun... oooooh look, shiny!

4. Doctor Who Anything

There is a ton of fantastic and fun Doctor Who stuff out there! From t-shirts and lamps, to cookie jars and a floating TARDIS! If your Geek Girl is a Doctor Who fan, she'll love just about anything Doctor Who related. Take note though - many Geek Girls have a favourite Doctor, so you might want to check on that before getting anything Doctor specific. When in doubt though, go for #10. Or socks.

5. A Phone Wristlet - Everything a Geek Girl on the go needs!

Honestly, I think I could become as obsessed with phone wristlets and wallets as other folks are with shoes. Or I could if I owned an iPhone... there are a lot fewer options for my old Samsung Galaxy Ace than there are for iPhones, thank-goodness. If I owned an iPhone, I'd probably be off perusing the sites and picking up new wristlets and wallets every month, if not every week! The fact that these wristlets and wallets are amazingly affordable would certainly be no help staving off my obsession!

I love the idea of having my phone, ID, credit/debit card and a little cash all together, ready to grab and go. It's so much more convenient to just grab the wristlet for those quick trips to the store. And at the same time, it's compact enough to easily toss into a purse whenever necessary. I keep business cards and my phone in a wristlet now, but it's just a small zippered wristlet - no pockets or holder for the phone - and I often spill out my business cards when I go to grab the phone. A wristlet made specifically for the phone would be so much easier! So.. ya.. I guess this is going on my own Christmas wish list too - my options may be fewer but there are still some really nice phone wallets and wristlets out there even for my old phone.

My favourite wristlet (today) of all wristlets - not just those for my phone - is the ECO-FUSED Bling Floral Interior Leather Case Cover for Apple iPhone 4G/4S with inner Flora print. In purple. I like how it's all business on the outside and all fun and bling on the inside! It also comes with a hand strap, two screen protectors, and two purple stylus!

6. A Towel - ... about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitch hiker can have.

Beard Oil, Moisturizing Oil for Beard, Essential / Beard Growth Accelerator, Moisturizes, Soothes, Stimulates the Shoot and Shines, For the Care and Care of Long and Short Beards, 30ml
Beard Oil, Moisturizing Oil for Beard, Essential / Beard Growth Accelerator, Moisturizes, Soothes, Stimulates the Shoot and Shines, For the Care and Care of Long and Short Beards, 30ml

... any man that can hitch the length and breadth of the Galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through and still know where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with.

- Douglas Adams

7. Dragon's Lure Wrap Earring

Is the Geek Girl on your list an AD&D player or a "Game of Thrones" fan? This earring is sure to appeal to fans of both the game and the books/show. In fact, I'm so sure that it will appeal to those fans that I'm getting one as gift for someone myself!

Of all the dragon wrap earrings I came across, I like the "Dragon's Lure" wrap earring the best. I like:

  1. that all you see is the dragon - any extra bits needed to keep it hanging on to the ear are not visible when it is worn
  2. the sleek wing design - I saw another dragon wrap earring that I liked, but the design had the wings rising above the ear; I could just imagine catching fingers or knocking the earring askew whenever sweeping hair back behind the ear.
  3. that the tail actually goes through the ear

8. A Tribble! - They're no trouble at at all.

Tribbles have a calming effect on humans and are terrific Klingon detectors! These small furry creatures would make great pets for Geek Girls.

9. A Smartpen - Make notes available here, there and everywhere!

This is a pretty cool bit of technology. It's a device that can record notes three ways:

  • with ink, on a piece of paper
  • with sound, making a recording
  • with data, digitizing your notes as you write them
Livescribe has a few smartpen offerings - which pen is the right choice for the Geek Girl on your list depends on how she likes to work, which devices she uses, and her access to internet connections:

  1. Echo:

Recordings and data are manually transferred via USB cable to the computer (running Windows or Mac OS), then can be shared from there. The Echo is the best choice for those with unreliable internet connections and those without an "unlimited" data plan. It's also the best choice for those who like to have local copies, or for those who would prefer working with a Mac or Windows PC/laptop versus working on a tablet

  2. Sky:

Transfers recordings and data via Wi-Fi (or USB cable) directly to an Evernote account on the cloud as the notes are written, or whenever Wi-Fi access is available. This is a good choice for those who are ALWAYS connected to the internet since there are no additional steps required to store your data, but a connection will also be necessary to review the captured notes. It is also a good choice for those who use tablets instead of Mac or Windows PCs/laptops since the Livescribe Desktop app doesn't run on tablets

  3. Livescribe 3:

Transfers data via Bluetooth directly to your mobile device - no Wi-Fi required - so long as your device runs iOS. It doesn't provide a recording function on the pen though - it uses your mobile device to do the recording so you'll need both the pen and your mobile device out for full functionality. This might be an option for Apple fans who always have their iPhone or iPad out anyway

Livescribe uses special paper with a micro-pattern on it so that the pen can determine where it is on the page, and know when to start and stop recordings and playback. You can purchase notebooks with the special paper, or you can print your own. For the pens themselves, you can choose to have 2 GB, 4 GB or 8 GB of on-board memory.

Livescribe takes your notes beyond the page they're written on and allows you to turn your handwritten notes into plain text and share them as documents, emails or messages. It can provide quick access to all of your notes via your favourite computing device, and also makes your notes searchable, something just not possible with paper and pen notes!

10. A Shiny! - It's a Swarovski crystal pendant! Or is it??

If you'd like to give your Geek Girl some sparkle and shine this Christmas, consider one of these two Swarovski crystal pendants from ZaNa Design. With 72 crystals in a hand-polished silver setting, these two pendants will definitely provide the sparkle and let your Geek Girl shine. And the bonus is that the pendants are also USB drives!

I've recently discovered ZaNa Design and love what they're doing with USB drives! These folks from Poland have the most unique USB designs I've ever seen - they are making truly beautiful tech! In this lens, I've featured their Swarovski crystal pendant designs for the bling factor, but I also like their fabric fob designs (with just one Swarovski crystal) and their wood usb designs! Actually, I'll include one of their fabric fob designs and one of their wood designs here too. I could go on about ZaNa's USB drives, but then this would turn into a ZaNa lens instead of a Gifts for Geek Girls lens!

As a 'girl' scientist, I think you have a some great selections. Some Star Trek goods might be order, and maybe a microscope, telescope, a handlens?

If you are shopping, by catering to your young lady's intelligence, you are doing a great thing for her!
