Gifts For Kids Going to College
Graduation and College Gifts Have Changed Over the Years
When I left for university my parents gave me a nice, shiny, brand new Timex watch. I was a lot simpler to shop for a teen going off to University back then.
I loved that watch so much I still have it. It looked very grown up and it made sure I got to all my classes on time, (Well, almost)
Last Christmas I asked my son if he wanted a watch for Christmas. He simply held up his cell phone and explained that was what he used to tell time. Apparently, only old people wear watches, unless the watches are equipped with a camera and a bunch of cool high tech options.
Obviously, I had a lot to learn before I chose my son's "Going off to College" gift. I asked my son and a bunch of his friends for their suggestions.
Here's the list. There's an added bonus. Ahead, I'll also tell you about a gift my parents sent me when I was in university that is still cool today. Here's a hint...It's not a watch.
Pick #1 College and Dorm Trunks
This is one of the most requested gifts for kids going into residence (dorms) or going into their first apartment. Even kids who are staying at home will appreciate a secure place to keep their stuff.
These trunks come in a huge variety of styles, colors and features.
You can get trunks that double as an added chair, store under the bed, have add on wheels for easy transport and are lockable.
There's a college or dorm trunk available for every student.

Large, with wheels.
Buy individually or as part of a set.
Holds two padlocks for extra security.
Fits under the bed for extra storage when space is tight.
Available in 18 colors.
Pick #2 Go High Tech
When the kids gave me these suggestions, I admit I went "Huh".
A lot of this stuff, I have never heard of.
iPods, cell phones, digital cameras, laptops..I use all of them every day, but these picks are newer and cooler.
Shopping for my "going to college" kid just got fun.
High Tech Gifts
Get a bunch of college students together and what do you get? Lots of noise.
These Bose headphones let you hear music like you've never heard before.
Connects to your iPhone with a click of a button.
Brand new and a great gift for a techie.
Don't bother lugging your laptop to lectures.
Record and download to your computer.
Pick #3 Go No Tech
It's nice to have some of the comforts of home, starting with good towels.
I recommend beach towels. No one every complained that a towel was too big. Add a few face clothes, but skip the hand towels.
We have a nice set of towels in our guest bathroom. The set includes a bath towel, a hand towel and face cloth.
I am pretty sure that my kids have never used a hand towel. They only go for the big stuff,
A nice comforter or quilt gives any dorm or new apartment a homey feel.
You can't tuck them in any more. but it's nice to know they are comfortable.
Towels and More
Big, thick and rich. Again, available in different colors and patterns.
Keeps you cool when it's hot. Keeps you warm when it's cold.
Make it your own with a duvet cover.
They will have to do laundry. Mom's not around any more.
A good laundry bag makes life easier. Throw in a roll of quarters or dollar bills.
Pick #4 Gift Cards
My kids are all on-line shoppers.
To tell the truth, they've got me a little hooked as well. It's fun seeing the delivery truck pull into the driveway.
Amazon gift cards are my favorite to give and to receive.
Check out the restaurants, gyms etc in the area where your kid is going to school.
Chances are, a gift card is just a mouse click away.
Gift Cards Galore!
A classic pack of Amazon Gift cards. Ten $25 gift cards. Good for just about anything!
Pick #5 The Gift My Parents Gave Me
Growing up, there was always soap in the soap dish.
There was always shampoo, conditioner, toilet paper and moisturizer in the bathroom.
There was always soap and dryer sheets in the laundry room.
Well...you get the idea. When i went to university it was a shock when I had to start buying all that stuff.
My parents sent me a care package with all the essentials. It was my favorite gift.
Here's a list for your care package. If you don't already have a dorm trunk, consider picking one up to ship all this great stuff.
- Shampoo and conditioner
- Toothpaste, mouthwash and extra toothbrushes
- Shaving cream and razors
- Combs and Brush
- Laundry soap and dryer sheets
