Unique Gifts for Retirees
What gift is perfect for a retiree?
More Old Duffers will hit the retirement date this 2017. With so many gift choices for retirees nowadays, it is difficult to choose. Usually, a committee is formed of office colleagues and the poor wretch absent that day is elected to head of the retiree gift committee. If you are the one chosen, what gift will you propose for this new retiree?
What gifts will you give retirees?
Gifts Retirees will Appreciate
There are choices to make and ponder before we commit the full $12.56 collected from the 200 office mates to purchase a memento of respect and appreciation for the 35 years of plodding effort.
1. Make Retirees find an Exciting Life Ahead of them
Make retirement not only fun but supercharge it for your new retirees.
Retirement for many people is the end of work life that has given them meaning for years. Showing your appreciation for what they have done is always the right thing to do. At the same time, it is not the end.
Many retirees now are still young and, thus, are still able to enjoy many years that unless something engages them, life will not be the same. Think of gifts to encourage them to create a new adventure for themselves. This book is just what thy'll need to give them ideas and alternatives some of which they may thought but some may have escaped their imagination. Even if some of these things are not for them, it will still be a good read.
2. Gift your retiree fun
For those who have not yet retired, you may think retirement is rest. Forget it. When you sit in your homes, chances are your being free will not last long.
There are always people around who will look for something to engage you. So, help your friends about to retire.
Fun Books for Retirees
Make retirees laugh at their situation. You double the value of the gift when you add laughter to it. There are some books that will entertain them no end and which they can share with their retiree friends.
Here's a book retirees will have so much fun of. The surprise of retirement is often the realization that work is still there but it is more enjoyable. Or, you never know what each day will bring that often you have no choice but to laugh at it. Otherwise, you'll go crazy.
This book will help your friends find the humour in what they are going through. The transition can sometimes be difficult and stressful so this book will give them some laughs.
The Gift of Fun
3. Kindle retirees love for reading
If your retiree still doesn't have one, the Kindle is my top gift recommendation. My husband who just turned 70 really loves the Kindle Paperwhite. He used to have the first generation Kindle which just became too heavy. So, off we went to the store to check out and of all the recent Kindle offering this caught his fancy.
Having a Kindle is having your Library with you all the time. It's carrying so many books in a small wallet. Your retirees now can carry their books inside their purses or even put this inside their coat pocket.
If they already have a Kindle and you know how much they love it, you can upgrade what they have to something lighter and lighted. The Paper White is just that. It makes reading in bed a much more enjoyable experience as you don't get the moans of particular neighbours who can't sleep because of the light.
4. Pool your Money for a Worthwhile Retiree Gift
Does your retiree like hanging out in coffee shops? If so, get your retiree an iPad or any other e-tablet. He/She would have fun bringing this to the frequented coffee shop with WiFi access and enjoy the free online searches. They can use the IPad's camera to take pictures while they're hanging out with friends and laugh at these pictures. They can entertain themselves with brain games to exercise their mental faculties or just play with talking friends and have a good laugh.
If you do this, you don't have to give them an e-reader as the iPad has iBooks and you can also download the Kindle app and read all your Kindle books or get new ones in iBooks. Make sure you get them those screen protectors so they can immediately protect their new iPad screen. For a little over a dollar, you save the retiree from frustration.
I suppose it depends on who is retiring. If he is someone who has really helped you or close to you, then, you tend to give a better gift.
5. Give them the gift of wisdom
Make your retiree friends think of these years as their best ever. Why? They have years of experience and these have given them so much strength and wisdom to respond to life's challenges with more success. You don't want your friends whining to you about the lack of engagement or being caught up in engagement they don't enjoy.
Concerned about the price of retirees' gifts? - On average, how much do you usually spend on a retiree gift?
How much do you usually budget for a retirement gift for a colleague?
6. Gifts to enhance their home office
Even if the retirees in your gift list will not go for a second job, they often maintain a place they can keep their lives organized.
This will become more of their own nook in their home where they can do the things they like and meet with some of their friends and colleagues.
If they start exploring a new hobby or another job, this office will even be more useful to them.
Get gifts to make this place more useful and fun to them.
Give retirees something for their home
Here's one you can give your retiree, a fun gift for their seating area. Most retirees want to have fun things around them. This one is a conversation piece when visitors come.
This pillow might come in handy for those retirees who don't want to be bothered. They just can stuff this to family members who push them to do things they don't like. Not really a kind idea. Just use it for laughs.
7. Get them something special to add to their collection
For retirees who are avid collectors, this is worthwhile. We have a colleague who collected older blue vases so getting one of those made him really happy. The classic suitcase can work but put something funny in it.
See if the company is giving a gift or wants to match employee contributions. Some gift ideas are expensive so it is better to pool your money to buy one special item that would be hard for that person to get once the slippers are the main footwear.
For collectors, you can give the gift of experience. Give them a membership card in a museum close by.
9. Give retirees who love to cook a chef's hat or a smart oven
Here's a smart gift choice. Give them something they had been wanting to get. Some of these handy appliances are just so easy to use but most retirees would not dream of throwing out their old ones for something more practical. But if they are given such, they just love them.
The Gift of Travel
10. Give them the gift of travel
Introduce retirees to a new engagement. Retirees who travel often love to share their pictures and what better gift to give them than a camera they can start fiddling with, learn how to use and even take courses on photography.
Even for retirees who will not be on the road often, having a new engagement is so important. Picture your retiree having a great time taking pictures as he takes his walks in the morning for some Vitamin D from the sun. Watch them as they learn how to edit these and share them with family and friends.
Gardening for Retirees
11. Gifts to Make Gardening Easy and Fun
You can prepare a basket full of things they can use in their garden. They will love these especially when you choose baskets that they can use when gardening.
You can also make them take on projects in their garden. It is important to have a purpose and give your days some direction. So here are some good choices for these retirees:
12. The gift of golf
If it is, organize for your retiree to play in one of these places. Experience is always the best gift you can give someone.
