Glass Ball Ornaments

Updated on December 21, 2014

More Than Just Your Basic Baubles

Glass ball ornaments have a long tradition and have adorned Christmas trees for generations. Originally known as baubles, these festive ornaments have been produced since the mid 1800s. Traditional designs include brightly-colored solid balls which may be either plain, as shown here, or painted with various Christmas-themed images such as snowflakes, candy canes, snowmen, angels, Nativity scenes, or pictures of Santa Claus. Nowadays, glass ball Christmas ornaments not only come in these more familiar traditional forms but also in some newer styles you may have never seen before.

If you are looking for something different with which to decorate your Christmas tree this year, check out my gallery of really eclectic (and sometimes downright quirky!) glass ball ornaments. Whether you are artistic, a sports fanatic, an Elvis fan, more traditional, a bit eccentric, or just looking for decorating ideas, I have something here for just about everyone.

My Top Glass Ornament Pick

Although this decoration doesn't quite fall into the glass ball category of ornaments featured on this page, when I came across this unusual item on, I could not pass it up. This cupcake ornament by Old World, which is made mostly of glass and silver, almost looks good enough to eat. Baby's First Christmas Glass Ball Ornaments

Hand Blown Glass Ball Ornaments By Kitras On eBay

These colorful and stunningly beautiful hand blown art glass ornaments by Kitras make wonderful collectibles. These one-of-a-kind decorations are each around 5 to 5.5" in diameter and may be hung on your Christmas tree or outside to catch the light. They are available in a wide variety of colors and the selection shown below is only a small sampling.

Frosted Glass Ball Ornaments

For a less glittery, more translucent look, frosted ornaments add a more traditional and elegant touch to your Christmas tree. You can mix and match them very nicely with some of your more glitzy ornaments. My favorites are the frosted white ones because they remind me of a white Christmas.

Glass Ball Ornaments With Snowflake Designs

If you live in an area that does not get many white Christmases, these colorful ornaments with intricate snowflake designs should help to get you in the Christmas spirit.

Hand Painted Glass Ball Ornaments By G. Debrekht

Hand painted ornaments are one-of-a-kind items that also lend a certain elegance to any Christmas tree. These intricate Christmas-themed designs by G. Debrekht will become prized collectors' items that you will pass down proudly to the next generation. (The beautiful owl design shown below is a small sampling of Debrekht's many offerings.)

Elvis Presley Glass Ball Ornaments

For all you Elvis fans, you can hang an ornament of The King from your Christmas tree! Here's a really handsome one that caught my eye.

A Really Silly Ornament

Nothing says silly quite like the "Me Likey" glass ball ornament shown below. (I once heard this annoying but kind of funny expression on "Sex And The City" used by some highfalutin fashion designer, but does anyone in real life actually have the temerity to utter it out loud?) Anyway, picturing this goofy ornament on a beautifully decorated Christmas tree amidst many other more traditional ornaments struck me as being really funny for some reason.

This black glass ornament with pink and gold shoes, diamonds, and purses is a fun decoration for anyone who has ever watched "Sex And The City." And it's actually kind of pretty.

More Goofy Ornaments

If you were to slip one of these ornaments onto the family Christmas tree, how long do you think it would take before anyone would notice?

Clear Glass Ball Ornaments

If you enjoy making your own Christmas tree decorations, the products shown below are ideal for when you need hollow glass spheres for your various glass ball ornaments crafts projects. Clear glass balls can be personalized in various ways, e.g., by painting or etching, and some of the ones shown below can also be filled.

I like a mixture of Christmas ornaments, but always include lots of plain-colored glass ball ornaments.

This is a really nice lens, you need a great job covering Christmas balls - which I think are essential for every Christmas tree. I preferred the angel ball by Debrekht and the cupcake. Pinned to my Christmas board, and blessed.
