Golden Birthday Ideas

Updated on June 12, 2015

Golden Birthday Ideas

A unique event that occurs only once in any lifetime, a Golden Birthday occurs when the date you were born is the same as your age on that birthday. In other words, if you're born on the 12th, then the year you turn 12 would be your golden birthday. This rare joining of numbers is the perfect opportunity for a truly special celebration.

When it comes to golden birthdays, you may need ideas for a golden birthday party, a golden cake, or just golden gift ideas. Your imagination will quickly take flight once you begin considering all the possibilities for your own golden birthday ideas. So let's get started!

Golden Birthday Party Ideas

Golden Birthday Ideas fall into three main categories, based on the age of the lucky Golden Birthday "baby":

1. Birthday parties on dates between 1 and 10 should provide special kiddie fun with lots of treats, games, and colorful decorations. Popular golden birthday party themes for kids include Pirates of the Caribbean (golden treasure), Mother Goose (golden goose), and Willy Wonka (golden ticket, which we'll explore more below).

2. Those between 11 and 19 cover a wide range of tweens and teens, who may expect more trendy party themes, with music and plenty of nosh food. Think Solid Gold (rock n roll), Indiana Jones (golden Ark), Golden Globes (celebrities), or Golden Retrievers (for dog-lovers).

3. Planning a golden birthday for adults between 20 and 31? Look for chic, elegant, or interest-based party ideas. Depending on the guest list, your choices for this age group are wide open. King/Queen for a Day (golden crown), Gold Rush (gold miners), Golden Eye (James Bond), Hawaiian Paradise (golden pineapples), or even one of those listed above.

Be sure to explain the Golden Birthday idea to your guests so they can come prepared. You'll find some golden birthday gift ideas later on this page.

Willy Wonka Golden Ticket Birthday Party

Everyone wants to win a Golden Ticket! And a Willy Wonka party theme seems to transcend any age group (Katy Perry held one for her 25th birthday). You can create a golden ticket for the birthday girl/boy, or send golden tickets as invitations to your guests.

The video below provides many ideas for a Wonka Golden Birthday, including decorations, food, and party set up. You can't go over the top with this idea - remember this is every child's dream of unlimited fun and food. And the chocolate river is one element everyone remembers, so we'll focus on creating your own river of chocolate in the next section.

  1. One long table that's not too wide. You need space for all the goodies, plus a long table provides good traffic flow to the chocolate fountain. A square table will do, as long as everyone can reach the middle.

  2. One gold vinyl tablecloth that covers the entire table.

  3. Chocolate fountain (see below) with extension cord, if needed. Duct tape to secure fountain cord (brown or gold tape to match chocolate and/or tablecloth) and the extension cord if it's in a traffic area. Be sure to test the fountain several days before the party to be sure you know how to keep it running.

  4. Fondue chocolate to fill the fountain and keep it running for several hours. Consult the instructions that came with the fountain for tips on good performance.

  5. Several pounds of chocolate raisins or morsels, available in bulk bags, enough to create the chocolate river around the fountain and across the table.

  6. Goodies to dip in the chocolate fountain: marshmallows, rice crispy treats, fruit, candy, pretzels, etc., each in a separate container, plus dishes of frosting to top the chocolate treats.

  7. Skewers or forks for dipping, plates, napkins, and wet wipes (just in case!). Several tall glasses wrapped with gold wrapping or tissue paper to hold skewers/forks.

  8. Other table decorations as desired (lights, figurines, loose candy, etc.).

How to Assemble a Wonka Chocolate River

Set up your Golden Birthday chocolate river in a space that allows the guests to reach the food easily and appreciate all your hard work! You'll need access to electricity for the chocolate fountain, so keep that in mind.

Your biggest challenge will be keeping your helpers away from the chocolate fountain until the party starts!

  1. Set up the table, spread out the tablecloth, and secure as needed. If you place the table against a wall, guests can approach from either end. If the table is in the center of the room, guests can access it from all directions, but you'll need to secure the fountain cord to the table and the floor to prevent a tripping hazard.

  2. Place chocolate fountain in the middle of the table and plug into outlet. Tape down the cord from the fountain to the edge of the table (and across floor if needed).

  3. Fill chocolate fountain according to directions and turn it on to warm up.

  4. Spread chocolate raisins/morsels across the table and around the fountain to form a chocolate river. Cover the tape over the fountain cord if desired.

  5. Fill dishes with dipping goodies and frosting, and arrange dishes around the river of chocolate.

  6. Place a container of skewers/forks beside each group of goodies.

  7. Arrange plates, napkins, and wet wipes at both ends of table.

  8. Complete your set up with other decorations as desired.

Chocolate Fountain Ideas

Nostalgia Electrics 3-Tier Chocolate Fountain

Chocolate fountains are great ideas - and not just for Golden Birthday parties! You'll find plenty of uses for this appliance, and your guests will have lots of fun dipping everything possible into this fountain. It's fondue, but in a cascading sheet of luscious chocolate. Let your imagination run wild with chocolate fountain ideas.

This fondue fountain by Nostalgia is a best-seller for good reasons. Crafted with a plastic tower and stainless steel base for easy clean-up, this fountain works with a more reliable auger system rather than a pump. Separate heat and motor controls allow you to melt the chocolate first, saving time and mess. And the generous three-pound capacity means you fill it less often.

Reviewers found this item easy to use, easy to clean, reliable, and a value for price paid. Some had performance issues.

Golden Birthday Cake Ideas

Depending on your choice of party theme, your Golden Birthday cake can take many forms. You might make a treasure chest for a pirate theme, build an excavator for gold mining, or a golden egg for Mother Goose. Another popular golden birthday cake idea is to mold the cake in the shape of the special birthday number (a seven, for example, for a seven year golden birthday). Any yellow cake and/or gold frosting decorated with the party theme is always appropriate. And if you like cupcakes, you'll love the recipe below!

Golden Oreo Apricot Fluff Birthday Cupcakes

These delicious cupcakes are easy to make and create a tempting display when piled on a cupcake stand. You can add your own special touches, like gold cupcake liners, gold glitter sprinkles, or even sparklers.

Or use a contrasting cupcake liner (purple, green, silver, and black are good choices). You can always change the color and/or flavor of the icing, too.

Be sure to make plenty, as they'll go fast!

  4. 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter at room temperature

Instructions for Golden Birthday Cupcakes

Word to the wise: Always test a new recipe ahead of time to avoid unpleasant surprises.

You may already know how to make cupcakes, and these aren't that complicated. But adding the cookie in the middle can pose some problems. Check your test batch often as you get close to the stated baking time. Your oven may need more (or less) time to produce the best golden birthday cupcake.

Note: Unfrosted cupcakes can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days.

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

  2. Line standard muffin pan with cupcake liners.

  3. Follow directions on box to prepare yellow cake batter.

  4. Spoon one tablespoon of cake batter into each muffin cup.

  5. Place one cookie in top of cake batter in each cup.

  6. Top each cookie with another tablespoon of cake batter.

  7. Place muffin pan in oven and bake until cupcakes are puffed and set, about 15 minutes. Rotate the pan halfway through (around seven - eight minutes).

  8. Remove from oven and let cupcakes cool in the pan on a wire rack.

  9. Using electric mixer and large mixing bowl, beat one cup butter with apricot jam on medium-high setting until smooth. Add marshmallow topping and confectioners sugar and beat until smooth and fluffy, about three minutes. Adjust color with food coloring if desired.

  10. Spoon frosting into decorating bag (if using zip-top bag, snip a half-inch off one corner). Pipe frosting onto cooled cupcakes in a large swirl, from outside in, ending with a curl on top.

  11. Decorate cupcakes as desired, and arrange around tower to serve.

Best Stand Mixer You'll Ever Own - ...and the last one you'll ever buy!

KitchenAid Artisan Series 5-Quart Mixer

You won't find a better kitchen stand mixer than the KitchenAid Artisan Series 5-Quart Mixer. Not only is it easy to use, with attachments galore, it comes in nearly every color imaginable, it's incredibly reliable, and it's exactly the perfect size for your home kitchen.

The secret to this mixer's success is in the way the head rocks back away from the bowl. This action is far superior to a bowl that moves down away from the head, giving you complete access to the inside of the bowl without working around the beaters. The bowl is the perfect size, easy to lift with the convenient handle or with both hands if filled with heavy dough. With this strong 10-speed motor, you'll be making bread, cookies, whip cream, mousse, and more with almost no effort. It's a dream to use and even easier to clean. No wonder this is a best-seller!

Reviewers found this product to be attractive, easy to use, and reliable. A few had quality control issues.

Golden Birthday Gift Ideas

Choosing the perfect gift is always a challenge. For this special event, you and your guests may need some Golden Birthday gift ideas.

Because a golden birthday has a special number associated with the date, consider gifts that can be grouped into a set of that number. Be sure to keep the recipient in mind, however. Two dozen roses may be lovely for a lady turning 24, but a dozen roses for a twelve-year old may not be the best gift idea. How about a set of twelve bracelets? Or a gold bracelet with twelve charms?

Other golden birthday gift ideas work for any occasion, but a little effort can make them as special as the celebration. A set of gold picture frames with photos of family, friends, and pets is always nice. Girls of all ages will appreciate a piece of jewelry with birthstones in the golden birthday number. A CD or MP3 collection works for both guys and gals, or consider a set of lessons, a book of movie tickets, or even a golden egg with a special treasure inside.

If you're really stuck - buy a gold gift card in a suitable denomination (or multiple thereof)!

Golden Birthday Gift Balloons

The video below presents an inventive way to create a nifty set of balloons that works for any Golden Birthday. While the balloons themselves may not be enough to gift by themselves, consider using a wrapped gift as the anchor for the balloons. Or use these balloons as centerpieces and weight them down with bricks sprayed with metallic gold. You might even put the gift inside one of the balloons!

Supplies for Twelve Birthday Balloons

These directions are for a golden birthday of twelve, but you can create a set of balloons in nearly any number. Even if you have to divide the inner balloons unequally, you can still make this work. In this example, we're making three large balloons with four small balloons in each one, with a flower base on a stick.

Note: If you're using helium to fill the balloons, you can use balloon weights in place of the sticks. Also consider that air-filled balloons last for weeks, but helium balloons last only 16 - 24 hours.

  1. Balloons: four small, and three large (optional: three flower balloons)

  2. Balloon pump (or helium tank with nozzle)

  3. Three balloon sticks (or curling ribbon & weights if using helium)

  4. One pencil with eraser, at least as long as a small balloon

  5. Scissors

Instructions for Twelve Birthday Balloons - Follow video through these steps:

  1. Place small balloon over the eraser end of a pencil. Insert into large balloon, pulling the open end out beyond the large balloon opening.

  2. Insert nozzle of pump into large balloon, past the small balloon. Pump large balloon until it begins to expand.

  3. Holding both balloon ends in your fingers, insert nozzle of pump into small balloon. Pump small balloon to desired size. Tie off end of small balloon. Cut off excess.

  4. Pump large balloon bigger, then hold end tightly in fingers.

  5. Repeat steps #1 through #4 for three more small balloons, until you have four inflated balloons inside the large balloon. Tie off large balloon.

  6. [Skip portion of video with long blue balloon.]
Inflate one flower balloon and tie off.

  7. Insert end of large balloon through hole in flower balloon.

    [Stop video here.]

  8. Tie end of large balloon to stick. [If using helium-filled balloon, tie curling ribbon to end of large balloon and balloon weight.]

  9. Repeat steps 1 through 8 for two remaining large balloons.

Golden Birthday Party Favor Ideas

Anytime you throw a party, it's nice to give the guests something to take home. But if you're holding a Golden Birthday, you may need some ideas for party favors. Obviously, you should start with your party theme. Just in case, here are some generic golden birthday ideas to get you started:

Gold...coins (chocolate or bubble gum), costume jewelry, bags or boxes of gold fish crackers, bottles of bubbles, crowns, keychains, pom-poms, stickers...

Wow, this is an awesome lens. Sadly my golden birthday was 31 years ago.

I guess that means you can have only 31 golden birthdays. I have log passed that stage so I guess I will need to concentrate on the grandkids birthdays. Fantastic lens. I'm hungry.

I had never heard of Golden Birthdays before. Sadly mine was quite a while ago - when I was five. I will have to keep your fun ideas in mind for my kids though. My youngest one will have her golden birthday coming up in 2 1/2 years. Blessed.

I'm so jealous! I want a golden birthday! Mine would have been my 1st birthday so that's not going to happen. Same for hubby. I've missed my oldest son's. That leaves the two younger ones but - darn - they were born late in the month so I've got 13 years to go for the next opportunity. Shoot. These are some incredible ideas that I'm going to have to steal for just a regular birthday. ;)

Yes, it was a wonderful day. (Many years ago, but wonderful nonetheless.) I wish I would have had the recipe for Golden Oreo Apricot Fluff Birthday Cupcakes back then. Looks like I will have to make up for lost time. :)

I never heard of Golden Birthdays before. Mine would have been on my second birthday, a loooong time ago. The chocolate fountain would have been a favorite, I'm sure... Great lens!

This is a cool idea and a fun lens to read through. I wonder if anyone would want to receive flowers or a "golden" gift basket from a friend or relative who couldn't attend? I also think do-overs should be absolutely permitted. Why not?
