The History Of Valentine's Day

And Gifts As Romantic gestures

According to Wikipedia, Valentine's Day Gifts (or the notion of sharing love on this day) may have its origin in 1380's England when Geoffrey Chaucer (the Father of English Literature) produced the first recorded association between Valentine's Day and romantic love. In 1382 Chaucer wrote his "Parlement of Foules," in which he penned:

"For this was on seynt Volantynys day

Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese his make."

Why Valentine ever became associated with love and romance is not really known, and while most people know of Saint Valentine, what most don't know is that there were in fact 14 Saints named Valentine. The name "Valentine", which means worthy, strong, or powerful, was quite popular just prior to the Middle Ages and there are no records to indicate which of the Saints was meant to be celebrated on February 14th.

The Church, however, recognizes Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni, both Christian martyrs, as being honored on February 14th. But as an official day of recognition the feast day of Saint Valentine on February 14 was removed from the General Roman Calendar in 1969; of course millions of Catholics and other religions still celebrate the holiday. It was removed, according to the Church, because "Though the memorial of Saint Valentine is ancient, it is left to particular calendars, since, apart from his name, nothing is known of Saint Valentine except that he was buried on the Via Flaminia on February 14.

While sending Valentine's cards and letters was popular 100 years earlier in England, in the United States it was the 1800's that saw the rise of Valentine's Day as a national sensation. An article in Graham's American Monthly observed in 1849, that "Saint Valentine's Day... is becoming, nay it has become, a national holyday." While romantic gestures have likely always been associated with love, it wasn't until the 1940s or 1950s that people began widely practicing the act of gift giving in association with Valentine's Day, more similar to the holiday as we now know it.

Greatest Love Story Of All Time - Eternal Lovers Abelard and Heloise

Abelard and Heloise were young lovers in 12th century France whose paths were forged by destiny and for which fate would hold some cruel and painful tribulations in which the pair would cement their unyielding love for one another by refusing to surrender that love. In a book, The Letters of Abelard and Heloise, the love letters between the pair are presented to not just merely chronicle their love, but to enshrine and highlight the notion of enduring love.

Heloise was a brilliant scholar with a reputation for intelligence and insight. She was the niece of Notre Dame's Canon Fulbert and driven by an incessant pursuit of knowledge and truth truth, of wisdom. Her uncle, in an effort to aid her pursuits and education, hired noted teacher Pierre Abelard to tutor and mentor the young Heloise.

Abelard was a well known and cited philosopher, theologian and preeminent logician some 20 years older than the young Heloise. While extraordinarily devoted to his career and intellectual pursuits, Abelard quickly finds himself enthralled by the young lady and a romantic relationship ensues, out of which a baby is born. While the exact events aren't certain, it is held that Abelard chose to have a "secret" wedding to protect his career.

Fulbert, not happy with the love affair and how it affected his niece, openly divulged the secret marriage to the world. This act would be the beginning of the tragic events that would put Abelard and Heloise on the romantic map.

Heloise, perhaps driven by the shame of a secret wedding (which must look to 12th century France as if something shameful had happened to require it) denied that she had married Abelard. Embarrassed by the whole ordeal, both Abelard and Heloise agreed that Heloise should retreat to a convent (Argenteuil). Fulbert became incensed at what he believed was Abelard's attempt to be rid of the young mother so he arranged to have Abelard beaten and castrated (likely by local thugs).

Both Heloise and Abelard agree that for everyone involved it was best that they retreat to religious professions and Heloise would become a Nun (apparently reluctantly) and Abelard a monk. Heloise wrote to Abelard that she couldn't understand why she should live out her life in a religious role for which she had no calling. She was also tragically forced to give up her child to adoption.

The pair began a long journey of separation and torment, but over the course of many years would express their love for one another via their letters. While hundreds of years may have erased some facts from this true tale, The Letters of Abelard and Heloise is an accurate and real expression of their love. If you're touched by their story and would like to indulge in a fictional spin on their tale, there is a great novel titled "Stealing Heaven: The Love Story of Heloise and Abelard" which adds a fictional spin to this true love story for modern readers looking for more.

Most Romantic Poem Of All Time

If you want to impress the one you love, share or write a poem.

You were born together, and together you shall be forever more.

You shall be together when the white wings of death scatter your days.

Ay, you shall be together even in the silent memory of God.

But let there be spaces in your togetherness,

And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.

Love one another, but make not a bond of love:

Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.

Fill each others cup, but drink not from one cup.

Give one another of your bread, but eat not from the same loaf.

Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each of you be alone,

Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.

Give your hearts, but not into each others keeping.

For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts.

And stand together yet not too near together:

For the pillars of the temple stand apart,

And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each others shadow.

Found in Kahlil Gibran's book, "The Prophet".

Whether on Valentine's Day or another special day, do you struggle each year when trying to find the perfect special gift for your loved one, or do you always know what to get?

Travel Somewhere Exotic

There's something special about rescuing the one you love from the hassle of the daily grind and do more than just take some time off, but immerse together in a truly special and memorable adventure of the sort from which lifelong memories are made. There are many places around the world which would easily meet your goal of a great adventure, but few places equal the untouched beauty and natural marvel that South America can offer. If you can dream it you can live it in South America.

Why do romantic getaways appeal to so many lovers? There are many reasons, but here are a couple. First, you both are in a new environment, one which you've never experienced separately. This allows you to build totally new and unique memories and feelings that will forever be associated with one another. Secondly, when you escape with the one you love to a place totally removed from your normal environment you remove many (if not most) of the daily stress that often times get in the way of passion and romance. Finally, the romantic gesture associated with such a unique getaway sends a strong message about how much you value and appreciate the one you love, about how important it is for you to spend time together.

Whether you take a South American adventure, travel somewhere else, give a unique gift or do something entirely different, as you search for good ideas for Valentines Day or another special occasion always remember that the point is to make obvious and subtle gestures that they are special to you and that their happiness is important to you.

There are of course many ways to do that and not all of them require you to spend money. After all, money isn't an indicator of love. How you treat someone, daily, has more to do with true love than anything you'll ever buy them. But once in a while we all want to do something special with our significant other and I hope this article has given you some good ideas.

Chris Medina Knows What Love Is

Valentines Day is about love, not gifts. Though we do use gifts to express our love, and that's great, we can show it much more by how we actually love. I hope this inspires you.

If you don't know, Chris was an American Idol contestant. During the show it was learned that he's been taking care of his fiancé who was severely injured in a car accident, suffering brain damage. They were just months away from their wedding at the time of the accident, but showing what true love is, he stayed with her and now spends every day by her side. He wrote this song for her. This article talks more about the story of Chris Medina.
