Halloween & Fall Decoration Ideas 2015
It's that time of year again!
Fall & Halloween!
Let's decorate the porch, the yard, the house - outside, as well as in. This article will highlight some great decorating tips & ideas for Fall & Halloween. I'll show you some great ways to decorate your railings, windows, doors, the lawn, and any room in your house, even the bathroom. Whether you want some scary, cool, creepy décor or some beautiful fall colors with leaves, pumpkins or scarecrows, I've got you covered with some great ideas!
My Family & I love decorating for all the holidays and I thought I'd share some of our decorating tips & ideas with everyone, for Halloween & Fall. I hope you enjoy the wonderful pictures & ideas - maybe they'll inspire some really great ideas that you'd like to do when you decorate this year or next!
The next great big holiday to decorate for, after Halloween, Fall & Thanksgiving....Christmas! & Winter!
*That's a picture of our side porch, last Fall/Halloween.
*All the pictures on this page are mine, unless otherwise stated.
They are pictures I took of our house, decorated for Fall & Halloween.
The Fall Season! - This picture was taken at a nearby pumpkin patch. Can you see all the pumpkins?
Ah yes! The changing seasons! Cooler weather, bringing about Winter.
What do you think of... when you hear "Fall"?
Amidst the cool crisp air, I'm reminded of changing leaves, apple picking, apple cider, pumpkin patches(like the picture up above) & their respective carvings, hayrides, bundling up in warmer clothes, a nice campfire or fireplace fire, and yes of course - Halloween!!!
Every year, my family & I decorate for Fall first, before Halloween.
For as long as I can remember, my mom has always decorated for every season. All the traditional colors and themes are always present, for each holiday & season. Whether it's Easter Bunny and fresh flower themes related to Spring, or Christmas themed plates & nutcrackers along the shelves & counters, my mom has always decorated so beautifully. What a great feeling and ambiance each holiday & season has been, with those reinforcements of décor.
Time To Decorate! - *A Nice Fall Scenic Drive Picture*
The time-frames we end up decorating for Fall & Halloween are:
We Decorate For Fall: Late August - Early September
We Decorate For Halloween: Late September - Early October
We decorate for Fall first and then, not too long after, we decorate for Halloween.
When it comes time for the Halloween decorating - You can either choose to keep the Fall decorations up, and just put the Halloween themed decorations with them, or even remove some Fall items that you feel are too overbearing for the Halloween theme. We keep pretty much everything up because it all works together. The fall decorations can fit right in with Halloween and even can stay right up until Christmas decorating because of Thanksgiving's theme. It all goes together with the Fall items like leaves and anything harvest themed. The only time we might remove some items is if both the Fall & Halloween items can't fit in that general area or if it's too cluttered with all the elements together.
The time-frames we end up taking down the decorations are:
We take down our Halloween Decorations before we take down the Fall decorations because the fall decorations easily blend together with the Thanksgiving themed decorations for November.
We take down Halloween Decorations within a week or so after Halloween is over & then add Thanksgiving decorations maybe a week later or sooner.
We take down the Fall & Thanksgiving decorations within a week after Thanksgiving and start putting up Christmas Decorations!
Sometimes we take the decorations down as soon as possible, right after the holiday is over, so that way we can already get started on the next holiday's decorating.
We loveee Christmas!!!
If you're already dreaming of Christmas and want to read something Christmas:
Do You Decorate For Fall?
Make It Fun!!!
Fall Decoration Ideas
As you can see by my outside porch pictures we have some really cool ideas for Fall Decorating.
Orange leaves made of special material.
Orange colored, Christmas type, lights.
There are even orange, & other fall themed, colored flowers in flower boxes. (All of the flowers are fake. The temperature can get cold up here in New York, so the flowers wouldn't last if they were real.)
Halloween themed wreaths with same themed colors.
On the front door of our house(Not seen in this picture) we have an orange blanket, kind of like fleece or felt material, for some more orange color feel.
Different Houses Same Themes
My family & I have moved a lot in my life, but every house we move into we decorate it every fall! A lot of the pictures on this page will feature different places we've lived and the different decorating we did. I hope you enjoy them!
Scarecrows are a great Fall and Halloween decoration.
They're generally made of corn stalks and they have the word "Scare" in their names, they're synonymous with this time of year.
You can use rope, wire or maybe a staple gun and stick them where you want them.... on the poles of your house, tied to a tree or some of them even come with poles themselves, so you can stake them in the ground easily enough.
You could even make your own scarecrow with old clothes by filling them with leaves, after you rake them up and are done jumping in them of course. Stick the leaf-filled scarecrow on the front porch in a wicker, or any other kind of, chair.
I can remember making scarecrows when I was a kid. I even did it sometimes to surprise my mom or other family members, because it's funny... it looks like someone is just hanging out on your porch. I'd be like "Mom...There's someone sitting on our porch!" LoL
Here are some Scarecrow Making Articles on How To Make Your Own:
How To Make A Scarecrow On Youtube
Scarecrows are synonymous with Fall and cornfields, representing the harvest. They are a great decorating idea! Scarecrows are all around fun pieces to have adorning your yard or house and if you really wanted to get dark with them you could make them scary looking for Halloween!
Why buy a scarecrow when you can make your own out of old clothes and leaves? There are some other ways to make one and helpful hints how to, on Youtube. Youtube has quite the resource of tutorials for just about any project you can think of.
eBay is also another place to look for decorating pieces, like scarecrows....
Orange Leaves & Lights
Leaves change colors and fall off the trees, in Fall. "That's right captain obvious!" lol
Yeah but did you know you can buy fake leaves to decorate the inside & outside of your house? They look great by themselves or with some cornucopias and other seasonal trinkets. As you can see by the picture, we like to wrap them around the railings & columns of the porch. You can keep them in place by using a staplegun. We use a staple gun a lot!
Same goes for orange, Christmas type, lights. You can wrap them right along with the leaves or on their own, and then staple them in place. Make sure you get some outdoor weather extension cords to reach. Another great invention available is an adapter that screws into a lightbulb socket and has power socket holes for cords built into the adapter. So you can reach your cords, instead of running them out of your house if you don't have an outside power socket. Here's an example of what I'm talking about: Light Bulb Socket To Power Outlet Adapter
Leaves & Lights
The typical lights coined as "Christmas Lights" can be used for Fall if they're orange, yellow, red colors only. The only other neutral decorating lights that can be used are white ones. We keep white ones up for longer and as an all year round set of lights, to illuminate areas showcasing decorations or for seeing - like our back porch or our front.
These are some really cool lights! They're a nice change from having to deal with tangled up strands of lights.
The lights are in a solid tube that you hang up with the supplied screws and mounts. No more worrying about accidentally staple gunning the wires. I can't even tell you how many strands of lights in my years, that I've accidentally slipped and stapled the wire and then had to pull the whole section down to throw it away - what a waste of time & money that is!
You won't have those problems with these cool tubes of lights. They even sell them in Christmas colors too. Definitely check them out!
Fall Flowers & Wreaths
They sell a great deal of fake flowers at crafts store, of a wide variety of colors. They also sell empty wreaths that can be decorated. Join the two together and you have a Fall/Halloween Wreath.
Also, you can use your old pots that you would house your warmer weather plants, and put in some real soil or even use styrofoam blocks to stick your fake flowers into. If you have the pots or even window pots then fill them up with some Fall festive colors. Oranges, to yellows to reds, etc.
Here are some lists of Fall Flowers:
One of the many wreaths around our home...
A Really Great Fall Wreath!
Wreaths can be expensive! That one pictured above and linked to below, is kind of expensive, but it's a great wreath. It's got all the color and vegetation of Fall and the welcome of Apple Cider!
There are a lot of different wreaths to choose from, on Amazon, as well as eBay(listed below). Check the prices, read the reviews and have some fun doing some Holiday decorating & shopping!
This wreath is uber-expensive but from the reviews it's top notch. This Nearly Natural wreath looks splendiforous with its abundance of gourds and sprigs.
Made in U.S.A.
(try finding that label on anything you own!)
Fall Wreaths on eBay
You can either make your own wreaths or buy some absolutely beautiful ones online, like on eBay! Make sure you get them before they're gone! They are a hot commodity & they sell rather quickly....and for a good amount of money, I might add!
Usually, the wreaths that are sold on eBay are rare because certain designers only make a limited quantity and even when they're made, each one is unique and different than the last one because of each of the pieces used to make them, they are shorter or longer, or bigger or smaller than each of the other pieces - hence each wreath is different, if only by a little bit.
Pumpkins - *That's A Big Plastic Pumpkin In The Window. An Electronic Candle & Leaves In The Other
Carved, non-carved or even fake ones will work just fine for decorating the inside, as well as the outside of your house. But hey, why not carve them, it's fun...it gets your brain and body working. Why not use those pumpkin seeds from the inside to make a tasty snack!
You can even buy some fake corn & some cornucopias to decorate your house with. Think pilgrims! It's only a month or two before Thanksgiving! They're a fall theme.... harvests and all that jazz!
Here are some pumpkin carving articles to check out:

How To Carve A Pumpkin On Youtube
There are loads of Youtube videos in the topic of pumpkin carving. Here are just a few of them. If you're looking for specific ideas, it's best to search Youtube for them, you never know, they might just have the instructional videos you're looking for, to carve the perfect pumpkin this year!
Our House, Fall 2011, On Google Earth - Street View
These are only the Fall decorations shown on these Google map's pictures(The Halloween themed items haven't been added yet). These pictures say they are dated September 2011. It was still warm out too because our air conditioners are still in the windows, as well as our Solar Curtains upstairs. Solar Curtains work great by the way, for those hot summer sun blasting days! They also sell them on Amazon, which is where I bought my recent ones.
Our House, Last Fall, On Google Earth - Street View
On a side note, these pictures don't do the decorations justice. Sometimes seeing the decorations with your own eyes, they look better. Also, we eventually painted the porch with some fresh new red...so everything looks a lot better! Plus, this photo was taken before we filled in the decorations more.
Our House, Last Fall, On Google Earth - Street View
Did your street finally make it to the Google streetview availability?
Go here and type in your address: Google Maps and then when you get zoomed in close enough to see your street.....then click and hold that little yellow guy and move him over to your street and let him go and then your street should load in streetview mode unless yours isn't available yet. Eventually it will be, if yours isn't up yet.

Time For Halloween!
It's gonna be Spook-tacular! A Ghouled(good) time! lol
Let's face it, there are so many awesome decorating ideas for Halloween! You can basically do no wrong when decorating for Halloween. If it's a mess or not, it's still going to work.
Plus, who's going to know it's a mess?
There are so many areas of your house that you can decorate. Find out which ones you want decorated. Either the ones only people can see(the porch, living room, dining room etc.) or maybe ones that you also want to see, decorated for your own satisfaction(your bathroom, bedroom or any room you want).
Let's start outside......
Do You Decorate For Halloween?
Make It Scary!!!
Decorating Outside For Halloween - Decorating Your Porch
As far as outside goes, you've generally got the lawn, the porch & maybe some trees to play around with.
You can decorate the porch with a lot more functionality than the rest of the outside because of the structures available........
You could get a spiderweb going with some spiders in it.
You can hang a ghost that will sway in the wind.
You can hang a string of bats.
You can put up some witches.
You can stand some items on the porch, like a scary figure, like a witch or a zombie... or even yourself to scare the trick or treaters when they come calling for candy.
Amazon is your one stop shop when it comes to Halloween! They sell just about anything you could ever need for Halloween! Like this excellent flying bat!
This 8 inch long body, 17 inch wingspan electronic flapping wings bat is great for hanging from a tree, your porch or somewhere in your house. It even comes with the string to hang it.
This bat takes 2AA batteries(they're not included) to make it flap it's wings. Just be careful with the bat, it's somewhat fragile. If you think someone will get scared and hit it then pull it away fast so they don't break it in their scared frenzy lol
I highly recommend this bat. We also own one that has red light up eyes(this one doesn't have red light up eyes though).
Decorating Your Lawn
The Yard or Lawn:
There are so many great Halloween ideas for decorating your lawn.
You can set it up as a graveyard with people coming out of the ground.
Coffins or Tombstones and other macabre themed items.
Inflatable Halloween Decorations.
Electric &/or movable figures.
I've seen a lot of yards that are decked out with a lot of awesome stuff. We've used many lawn ornaments throughout the years. We've used an inflatable Frankenstein's Monster, a weird movable black creature(as seen in the picture) and many more. We've used a lot of inflatables for Christmas time too!
Halloween Lawn Decorations - Amazon
Sometimes just decorating your porch isn't enough. If you really want to impress people and yourself! Try decorating your lawn, if you have one! With many great inflatables to choose from on Amazon, here is 1 that I highly recommend!
Halloween Yard Decorations
How much you decorate your yard is up to you! Any left over decorations can be used in other areas of the house, outside, as well as in.
Decorating Your Trees
There are a couple of things that can be done with the trees, like with spiderwebs and hanging some characters from them.
You could use a witch or a ghost or something resembling a dead body.
Whether it's a smaller tree in the form of a bush or a big tree full of branches..... I'm sure you could use your imagination and come up with some great ideas on ways to decorate your trees.
Decorating Inside Your House For Halloween - Where To Start: The Door
Maybe there are a lot of rooms in your house and you don't know where to start.
Think about it this way.....When you think of going to someone's house....the first spot you arrive at is their front, side or backdoor. So why not decorate the door with some kind of electronic greeter, specialty doorbell or just a Halloween themed goodie!
Most people generally stick to decorating the outside of their house to the fullest and leave the inside of their house decorated with spread out pieces that depict Halloween themes. Trinkets, houses & figurines on shelves, tables, etc.
The next area you would then move onto decorating would be the room that is after that first door. Generally the next room in a persons house is a living room.
The living room and dining room share the same kinds of decorating ideas, almost as similar as the kitchen. Check out the Kitchen & Dining Room's.......
Decorating Your Kitchen For Halloween
As you can see by the picture that was taken in my mom's kitchen there are some good ideas for Halloween & Fall decorating.
She used leaves, pine cones and orange lights on the shelf above the sink.
A couple of scarecrows spread around.
A Halloween themed Barbie doll in the middle of the shelf display as well.
There are also glass containers filled with water and food coloring(used for color).
Halloween coffee mugs hanging up on cup rings, just below the cabinets.
A ghost hanging from the top of a doorway.
Decorating tables or counters with little trinkets or figurines is a splendid idea too! They sell little Halloween themed figurines - kind of like Christmas Village items but for Halloween. Little haunted houses, trick or treaters, monsters, etc.
Halloween Mugs & Plates
You are what you eat! Halloween plates, mugs, cups and just all around eating/drinking ware will get you & your visitors into the spirit of Halloween! Take this witch cupcake tray for instance......
Decorating Your Dining Room For Halloween
As you can see by the picture that was taken in my mom's dining room there are some good ideas for Halloween & Fall decorating.
She has a vase full of Fall/Halloween themed flowers with some cornucopias and fake berries.
Two specialty fake plants, full of red balls covered in some kind of clear plastic type glitter... in their own vases.
Red & orange candles.
Also, on the hutch there are more Fall colored leaves & Fall themed plates.
(She has plates for every season and every occasion.)
Recent Pictures Of Our Dining Room Table
Even when it's not Halloween, candles always seem to have a magical quality about them, be it spooky or just plain special. Turn your house into a Halloween house by placing little candles all around and enjoy the sea of flickering flames. Using real flame fire candles are a bad idea now that flameless candles are so easy to buy....
Decorating Your Bathroom
Don't forget to give your bathroom a little fall festive feel.
Make the whole house pop with fall colors & foliage.
Pumpkins, Leaves & More!
I really like this shower curtain! I've always loved pumpkins....ever since I was a little kid. They almost have the same feeling in my mind, like the way the cartoon pizzas looked in the old cartoon "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles". They always looked delicious! But, with pumpkins in general, they have a feeling of freshness because of the orange colors to them and you can't beat a smiling pumpkin!
Towels, Soap Dispensers & More
Halloween Door Decorations
If you won't want to put a Halloween wreath then the next best idea for a door decoration is a plastic or paper door picture making your entrance way really pop! Or you could just by a spooky door knocker that is electronic or not.
Who's that on the toilet? lol
The bathroom is pretty simple!
You can buy a special Halloween or Fall themed shower curtain.
Fall or Halloween themed toilet covers, rugs & bath mats.
You could buy some decals for your mirror.
Special containers for your shampoo, conditioner or soap holder.
Decorating Your Toilet
Halloween Bathroom Decorations
The bathroom is already a scary place full of gross things lol The movie "Psycho" scared us with that shower scene and I'm always conscious to make sure and check the toilet and hope nothing is in there, waiting to attack me when I'm sitting on the bowl. So, why not decorate the bathroom with nice Halloween themes like pumpkins or fall colors or you could always take it to a higher level with the horror factor, if you like that sort of thing! lol
Halloween Shower Curtains & Bathmats
We're vulnerable when we're in the shower. Our clothes are out of reach and we're slippery. No wonder the bathroom is the number one room in the house for accidents!
Decorating Your Bedroom For Fall & Halloween
One of the least decorated rooms for Fall & Halloween is the bedroom. There are a couple of ideas for decorating your bedroom with fall festive colors, as well as spooky Halloween ambiance.
The three simple ideas for you bedroom are:
#1. The bed. You can buy Fall or Halloween themed/colored sheets, pillowcases & blankets.
#2. Your nightstand/tables..... Fall & Halloween themed lamps.
#3. Don't forget the curtains! Obviously curtains can be used all over the house as well - In doorways or in the windows, your choice. So whether it's the colors of fall or a spooky looking curtain, there are plenty to choose from on Amazon! Just jump through any link on this page and you'll surely find some more great Halloween & Fall decorating ideas....
Now That You're All Decorated......... - *That's A Picture Of A Haunted House, Near Where I Live
Now that you're done decorating for Fall & Halloween all you have to do is get yourself, or your kids, a Halloween Costume and buy some candy for the trick or treaters. Don't forget to take part in some great Fall & Halloween festivities.

Make Your Own Haunted House?
How To Make Your Own Haunted House
Maybe instead of decorating for Halloween, for your own pleasure, maybe you want to make your home into a haunted house? If you're thinking about making your own abode into a haunted house then here are some helpful articles to point you in the right direction for tips and ideas.....
Opening up your house for visitors to walk through will surely be an experience for them and you. You'll be remembered if it's any good! You also have to decide what parts of the house that you want to have people allowed through and block off sections you don't. As well as move furniture, odds & ends into other unused rooms.
Usually when people make their own haunted house, they stick to the downstairs and have the main path lead from the front door to the side or back door. Also, some people in my area, where I live, have even made their haunted houses into paying ones. You might want to check with your local city hall etc. to see if you have to buy a permit for charging money.
