Kaylee Halloween Costume
Kaylee is one of my very favorite characters ever on TV
She is known for being bright, enthusiastic, kind, and bubbly while also being brilliant at mechanics. She keeps the spaceship Serenity flying and she does so with the brightest smile anyone's ever seen.
From the Pilot episode of Firefly:
Jayne: Captain, can you stop her from bein' cheerful, please?
Mal: I don't believe there's a power in the 'verse can stop Kaylee from bein' cheerful. Sometimes you just wanna duct-tape her mouth and dump her in the hold for a month.

I really relate to Kaylee right down to her wishing she were more elegant than she is!
Here's my Kaylee costume for Halloween....
Me on Halloween 2005
The hardest thing to find is the jumpsuit
It took me a long time of searching before I found the perfect mechanic's jump suit that was fitted to a girl but wasn't super sexy looking. I think the one I got was a home run! (It's still a little sexy, because I got some very flirty attention when I wore it back in 2005).
This one could probably be modified to work.
Stalking Ebay is probably your best bet
The selection will be spotty, so keep checking every day or two so you can snag the perfect jumpsuit. Don't be afraid to look at men's jumpsuits too. You could use a belt to feminize it a little.
Once you have the jumpsuit - you're going to need some patches!
Kaylee's suit has been personalized by her with patches of butterflies and teddy bears. It's hard to see them on the online pictures of hers, but if you look at the episodes you'll see them! I used a combination of patches and markers to draw hearts and other girly shapes. It's a very Kaylee thing to do to add very feminine touches to her masculine work outfit. As good as she is at fixing machines and being messy, a part of her wishes she could be a fancy lady.
Great Kaylee Moments
If you haven't seen this show yet, you should really check it out. It's quite a unique story with really interesting and well-developed characters!
The undershirt is another key to this look
Kaylee has various colorful (often flowered) shirts that she wears under her jumpsuits. It's another way that she makes her look her own and adds her own personality to her job. I got mine from TJ Maxx.
Another popular look of hers
is this one from the Pilot
Here she has on her jumpsuit with the legs rolled up, but she also has a Chinese-style jacket and a colorful parasol, with her hair up in two buns. You'll see this one a lot when people dress up as Kaylee for cosplay!
Check out these cosplayers! - Lots of inspiration.
Lots of people have made incredible Kaylee costumes, take a look...
Consider a Wig
The years that I've dressed as Kaylee, the one thing that made people not sure who I was supposed to be (hello, jumpsuit with hearts on it?!) was my hair.
I have very long, black hair, so it doesn't look much like her. It's too long to put up in the two cute little buns, so I just tied it up, but it confused people.
One of these wigs could be styled to look more like her hair...
Did You Know...?
- Actress Jewel Staite was required to gain weight to play this roll
- Many names of minor characters are drawn from science fiction writers. Such as Bester, Brennert, and Ellison.
- The characters often use Chinese phrases or words. In the world of the show it is because in the past America and China combined into one superpower, but it has the added benefits of getting around censor rules about swearing!
- The TV show was cancelled after only 13 episodes, but the DVD sales were so amazing and the fans so enthusiastic, that the movie Serenity was made based on the characters.
(This is the one costume where I don't worry about doing any makeup!)
Ready to go!
This is my favorite costume!
Ever since I saw Firefly in 2004, I've been doing Kaylee for Halloween nearly every year. She is one of my very favorite characters in fiction. I really relate to her. I have that same irrepressible optimism and enthusiasm for new experiences and people. I too sometimes wish I were more refined and elegant than I am, too.
