Sugar Skull Molds for Sugar Skulls
Make your own sugar skulls at home for holiday celebrations.
How to Make Sugar Skulls
To make these Halloween sugar skulls you will need some sugar skull molds. Using candy molds helps to ensure that you get just the right look and feel to the candy items you will make while using them. They come in quite handy, indeed.
You will also need some pieces of scrap cardboard or some clean dry Styrofoam platters that you get when you buy meat products. These pieces will need to be the same size of the sugar skull molds to fit along the back of the sugar skull once you have the sugar skull mixture in the mold.

Sugar Skull Recipe
Sugar Skull Ingredients
- 4 cups sugar
- 4 teaspoons meringue powder
- 12 teaspoons water
- food coloring
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup meringue powder
- 2 pounds powdered sugar
Sugar Skull Instructions
- Using a large mixing bowl you will ass the sugar, the meringue power and the water together and mix well. If the sugar mix seems to thin stir in just a little bit more of the meringue powder.
- Fill the sugar skull molds with the sugar skull mix. Lightly wipe off any excess sugar from the back of the skull and smooth it out evenly. Place the cardboard or Styrofoam pieces on top of the sugar skull mold and allow it to harden in a dry area. It may take anywhere from 6 to 8 hours for the sugar to dry hard enough to removed from the skull molds.
- After allowing the sugar skulls time to dry flip them over and the skulls should slide right out of the molds and onto the cardboard or Styrofoam.
- To make the royal icing for your Halloween sugar skulls you will need to mix the water and the meringue powder together in a large bowl and mix well with a hand mixer. Beat until foamy and then stir in the powdered sugar. Mix well to combine. Add food coloring to create the colors you want to use to decorate your Halloween party favors of skeleton skulls.
