Pumpkin Decorations, Designs and Art for Fall and Halloween

Updated on September 27, 2012

Halloween and Fall Pumpkin Art and Decorations

Autumn is a fantastic time of year to experience and view, as the summer ends and begins to transition to winter, as the fall season displays all the color and elements that make it such a wonderful time of the year.

That also means Halloween is just around the corner, and pumpkins are getting ready to be picked and displayed as part of our inside house décor and outside yard decorations.

Pumpkins are very versatile in their use, and come in a range of sizes, and of course shapes, depending on how they grow and the particular type of pumpkin you planted.

The smaller varieties can be used to complement their larger cousins, or as their own in numerous displays and scenes. They also can be carved or painted as the larger pumpkins can be.

Also fantastic for this time of year is to use other objects associated with the fall alongside of pumpkins; for example straw, corn, corn stalks, winter squash, gourds, pine cones, nuts, and colorful leaves, among other things

This is why it's so fun to use pumpkins as the center of a design, as there are so many other fantastic things to use to make a fantastic scene and/or display.

We'll look at a variety of these autumn and Halloween themes using pumpkins as the main attraction.

Decorating with Pumpkins, Corn Stalks, Hay and Corn

Here is a great example of using a variety of fall objects to create a wonderful scene.

You have the terrific pumpkins scattered about; a bail of hay to center and support the objects; colored corn; corn stalks; gourds; and cat tails. For flowers and additional color there are the "mum" plants.

What's nice about a setup like this is it not only looks fantastic, but it is relatively easy to put together once you have all the objects you are going to use.

And while this is a very traditional fall or Halloween decoration idea, the quality of the look shows why it's such a popular choice year after year. You can't go wrong with this one.

Pumpkin Decorations

Using Pumpkin as Flower Vase

Here is a fantastic way to use a pumpkin for decorative purposes, this time as a vase for beautiful flowers.

This particular pumpkin had paint added to it to smooth out the edges while retaining its orange, traditional color.

You could paint the pumpkin any color you want. If the decision is made to do that, be sure to do it in a way in which the pumpkin lines are easily seen, or otherwise using a pumpkin wouldn't make a lot of sense.

This is why orange works good if it will go with the flowers okay. Of course if you get a good looking pumpkin, you can always leave it its natural color and display the flowers that way.

Carved Pumpkins for Halloween and Fall Decorations

For those of you who love to do some pumpkin carving, it's an amazingly terrific way to delight family and friends who visit during the season, as they can be made to reflect any number of themes while retaining a seasonal look, as you can see below.

So if you're ambitious enough, you could carve out some regular jack-o-lantern pumpkin faces for normal decorative accents, and maybe have one or two carved out for those with specific interests, such as a merry-go-round or other theme.

These of course can be placed inside or outside, although you would want to watch the weather with the more complex pumpkin carving design patterns.

Since pumpkins are such a versatile prop to use for Halloween and fall decorating, only the imagination one has can hold back the ways they can be used in a variety of decorative scenes; whether it's indoors or outdoors you're placing them.

Now we'll look at a number of videos showing you everything from the basics of pumpkin carving to a large number of ways you can use a pumpkin to decorate your yard or house.

Pumpkins can be used as heads for figures in the yard, centerpieces in the home, or works of art to show off your skill.

Pumpkin Doctor Figure

Speaking of being creative with your pumpkins, below is a wonderful example of simply taking a white coat like a doctor would wear and placing a pumpkin head on it; adding some straw to fill out the body; and then completely the humorous look with a pair of goggles. How funny and entertaining to look at.

Did you notice the surgical gloves to the right as you look at the picture? It shows how a few simple accessories can make for a great outdoor Halloween or fall decoration scene using a pumpkin.

Also look at how easy it would be to make the face of the pumpkin stand out. Here it was a simple set of eyes; a cork for a nose; and a line for the mouth.

You could take any type of clothes and make whatever type of scenario you want, using pumpkins as the head to create a fantastic face to complement the particular theme you choose.

Placing Colorful Suckers in Pumpkin

Isn't this a great idea for Halloween? All you have to do is have a good-sized pumpkin and push the suckers into it to create the colorful design; one that all the children will be able to come up to and pull out for their Halloween treat. How cool is that? It also adds color to wherever you decide to place it.

This is an easy, quick and practical solution for a creative way to use a pumpkin to decorate and offer candy to children. You know this would be a great hit for all to enjoy.

Candy Corn Pumpkin Painting

This sure brings back memories of the days when as children I would grab a big handful of candy corn to satisfy my sweet tooth. It's a really fun design that could be extended through the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays if the pumpkins can last that long.

But for a nice looking an colorful addition to your fall or Halloween décor, these work great, as they include some of the colors we always associate with the season.

Here you would use a pumpkin with the correct shape, as seen with the one on the left, and probably a gourd with the corn shape that is pretty true to the tiny candy's shape.

I really like the way the detail stands out on the outside of the fruit.

There can be no doubt that pumpkins are the star attraction for the Halloween and fall season, and after seeing all the ways you can use them in the photos and videos above, you should be able to easily come up with some ideas to decorate your yard or house with.

Many people will take certain parts of their home and yard and use the pumpkins differently to match the particular display they want to present to family, friends or visitors.

Whether it's carving a pumpkin from an awesome pattern, painting a pumpkin, or adding accessories or complementary elements, using pumpkins in your Halloween and fall design scheme are a sure way to have a lot of fun and delight those fortunate enough to see them.
