Harry Potter Costumes for Kids

Updated on February 23, 2012

Whether you're attending a Harry Potter party, movie premier or just tired of the same old Halloween outfits each year, help your child create their own special Halloween costume based on their favorite character from the Harry Potter books by J. K. Rowling. Animal lovers may enjoy dressing as Hedwig or Hagrid. Future librarians may rock a Hermione costume. Mini bad boy (or girl)? Go for Draco Malfoy or his Aunt Bellatrix! Children need only be limited by their imaginations.

Bellatrix Lestrange was one of the most feared Death Eaters and aunt to Draco Malfoy. Costume includes the black dress with attached hood, cummerbund and Death Eater mask. Pair with black shoes.

The most recognized of J. K. Rowling's magical creatures, Dobby was a house elf owned by the Malfoys until Harry tricked Lucius Malfoy into giving Dobby his freedom. For a super easy Dobby costume, dye a length of muslin (or old bed sheet) with tea so it appears soiled and drape around your child toga style. Fold in half length wise and cut a hole for your child's head. Tie a knot in the material at each shoulder. Sew or hot glue seams along the side of the costume leaving enough rooms to put the arms through. The hem should hit your child slightly above the knee. Pair with the Dobby mask.

Gryffindor Robe

Pair the Gryffindor robe with a red and gold striped tie, white button down shirt, black pair of shoes, black slacks or shirt and black or grey vest. Add details to become various characters. For Harry, add the lightning bolt forehead scar with a eyeliner pencil and black glasses. Hermione needs a mousy brown frizzy wig, pile of books and a necklace with an hourglass charm. For Ron, add a red wig, freckles, rumpled clothes and a broken wand pieced together with tape.

Many happy reviews said the robe is made out of warm material perfect for a cold Halloween night and children were able to use the Gryffindor robe as a bathrobe after Halloween to get maximum bang for the buck.

Available sizes S-M-L

Are you an animal lover? Hagrid's costume includes a brown coat, shirt and belt. Pair with a long black beard, wig and hand held lantern.

Harry Potter

If your child wants to be Harry Potter himself, add a short black wig, wire rimmed glasses (with tape on the bridge), a broom, a wand and maroon and gold scarf to the Gryffindor robe. A lightning bolt scar on the forehead can be added with an eyeliner pencil.

If you have a very trick-or-treater accompanying an older brother or sister dressed as Harry, dress the younger child as Harry's pet owl Hedwig.

Lord Voldemort's costume can be simply made at home using a black graduation gown, black shoes, a stick wand and a bald cap. Use Halloween makeup to paint the face white..

Quidditch Player

Pair this quidditch costume with an old-fashioned stick broom, goggles, black pants and black shoes to magically turn your child into their favorite Gryffindor quidditch player. Parent reviews claim the costume is made of thick material and perfect for colder Halloween nights.

Professor McGonagall

Who doesn't like Professor McGonagall? Pair a black witch's gown (or black graduation gown) with a black turtle neck, black pointed witches hat, grey wig made into a bun, wire rimmed glasses, and a choker-style necklace with a silver ring adornment. Attach a 9-12" brown feather to the witch's hat.

Slytherin Robe

Add a green and grey striped tie, white button down shirt, black slacks and black shoes to perfect this costume. Additional details can be added to turn this Slytherin costume into your favorite character from Slytherin House.

House Patches

Want to make your own witches robes to make sure they fit your child? Or use already owned witches' robes or black graduation gowns? Add these house patches from Gryffendor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff for a more authentic look.

It's good to see more of the characters available as costumes and not just Harry.
