This cemetery is said to be the oldest cemetery in the Louisiana purchase and it is located in the oldest town in the Louisiana purchase. The oldest markers that are legible date back to 1797, but there are a lot of the markers that are no longer marked. It has even been said that St. Denis is buried in the cemetery. My grandfather and other family members are buried in the American Cemetery, and I can tell you that the cemetery is haunted!

Stories of The American Cemetery
From the time I was a little girl i heard so many haunting stories of the American Cemetery. I actually believed most of them, because I saw a lot of haunting things growing up in a 19th Century home. The most memorable to hear was a women hanging in amongst the trees in the cemetery. I never heard the story in great detail, but it was a frightening story to hear. There were also stories of a women killing an Ax murder in the cemetery, and it is said you can hear the man screaming at night.
This cemetery has stories for generations. There is a diverse group of people buried there, there was no segregation. I have heard of murders, robbers, politicians, wealthy, poor, black, white, creole, and more. You never know what to expect from such a diverse group, voo doo, witchcraft, revenge! When you visit at night you can feel the haunting spirits, as well as see and hear them!
Do I think it is Haunted?
YES! I have been in the American Cemetery at night, and you would be surprised at what you can see or hear. Even driving by the cemetery at night you can see figures walking through the graves, then they are suddenly gone. My grandfather is buried close to the entrance gate. On a couple of occasions I went there at night, just to get away. While sitting in the cemetery I would hear screaming, talking, laughing, and other strange noises. Some of these noises could be explained by people living close by, but others are so unusual that there is no way that they were made by any person. I have seen figures walking, then just disappearing into a grave or the figure sits by a grave then it goes away.

The home I grew up in until I was 12 has to be the most haunted place I have been, but I do not think my dad is up for visitors. It was an old hotel of some kind but the upstairs burned, so it became one story. Even though there is only a small loft area up the closed off stairs, you can hear people walking all the time. I have also seen a great aunt when I was little. She had a red dress, and was holding her head in her hands. Come to find out, she was decapitated years prior to me seeing her.
