Having a Halloween Birthday

Updated on September 11, 2013

Having a Halloween Birthday

When people first find out my birthday is on Halloween, I usually get two reactions. The first is "Wow, that's cool." And the second is "Woah, does that make you a witch?"

First, ok, it is cool sometimes. But often, your party is combined with trick or treating when you're a kid. Sometimes you just want a regular birthday party. The bonus is that my birthday isn't on or around Christmas, because no matter what parents say, they do combine presents.

At the end of the day, I was usually really sugared out and didn't want my candy for a few days.

Secondly, no, being born on Halloween doesn't give me any special powers. Sorry.

The good news is I don't have to dress up for Halloween. When asked, I can just say "Oh, I'm 39 for Halloween." That usually gets some great looks.

And when I had a kid, I didn't get much chance to celebrate since I was usually focusing on her. So, that means I'm like 10 years younger, right? If I didn't have the birthday, it didn't age me. Or so I keep telling myself.

Interest in All Things Halloween

The Dark, Occult, and Weird

Since many people wanted to know if I was a witch, at some point, I thought I'd learn the tricks of the trade.

These included:

Scrying (yeah, I have a crystal ball. It's packed away carefully in the garage somewhere)

Tarot Cards

Rune Stones

Palm Reading

And that's when I figured out the secret of the gypsies. A lot can be picked up from someone's eyes, facial expressions and body temperature. The rest of it is smart guessing.

I tried creeping myself out with figuring out who died on Halloween (Houdini).

As teenagers, we would play around with Ouija Boards and try and find out who we were going to marry. Pity we didn't keep journals.

I have a love-hate relationship with the greeting card companies. For years, there were about four or five "So You Have A Halloween Birthday" cards and I'd get all five of them every year.

We were pretty limited in color choices. You had your black, orange and purple.

The worst birthday? Probably my 16th when I was grounded. But as an angst ridden teen, it did give me something to complain about.

The one I feel most guilty? My 25th. My now husband & a friend put together a surprise birthday party for me. I hated it and then felt guilty because they went to so much work. I so hated being the center of attention.

Maybe that's why I loved having my birthday on Halloween. It wasn't about me per se. It was just a lot of fun.

So I can have my cake and eat it too.

What is a Scorpio

Or how to understand and not murder us in our sleep

We Scorpios are the most misunderstood sign of the group. Ok, at least that's what we believe. But don't take my word for it. Read any Astrology book.

Scorpio is the 8th astrological sign of the Western zodiac. Those born around October 23 through November 22nd are Scorpios since the sun is in their house. The planets Mars and Pluto (Pluto is still a planet in my book) are the co-rulers of the sign.

It's a fixed water sign (as opposed to cardinal & mutable and fire, earth and air in case you were wondering)

Scorpio Strengths:

- Loyal

- Passionate

- Resourceful

- Observant

- Dynamic

Scorpio Weaknesses:

- Jealous

- Obsessive

- Suspicious

- Manipulative

- Unyielding

We Scorpios are fiercely independent and love to be in control. And the best way to sum up a friendship with a Scorpio is "It's complicated." But we are interesting, never dull, and very loyal. Heck, we'll go to bat for you if we think you're being slighted.

We have a long memory for kindness and slights. (and I'm thinking about a certain teacher during summer school when I was 6 who told me I had no talent for art)

Scorpio is the astrological sign of extremes and intensity. (I wonder if a Scorpio founded the X Games)

Scorpios are very deep, intense people, (Don't look me in the eye)

We present a cool, detached and unemotional air to the world yet lying underneath is tremendous power, extreme strength, intense passion and a strong will and a persistent drive. But don't tell me I'm a dormant volcano.

So to sum up, let me think I'm control and we'll be fine. Oh and no surprise parties.

And no matter what they say, there is no "Darien Thoms" (or however it's spelled), but it is funny.
