How to Have a Fun Hippie Themed Party
Are You Looking for Hippie Party Ideas?
In this article you will find ideas for a fun hippie themed party, including decorating, favors, and cool birthday cakes. A Hippie party is one of my favorite themes and one of the most popular for teens and adults. It's easy to have a groovy time by using lots of tie dye, peace signs, and 60's music.
A fellow blogger, Terra Heck, recently had a hippie theme party for two of her children and she allowed me to use some of the photos of their party.
I hope these ideas will help you when planning your hippie party!
In your invitations, encourgage your guest to wear their hippie type clothes.
Decorating Ideas for a Hippie Party
It's easy to decorate for a Hippie themed party. Use lots of bright red, blue, green, and yellow balloons and streamers. Add in a few tie dye balloons. You can also hang a few hippie sayings signs on the wall. The daisy and peace signs were popular icons of the 60's, so anything that you can display having to do with those would be great.

- Red, blue, green, yellow balloons
- Red, blue, green, yellow streamers
- Hippie cut-outs and signs
- Hippie bus
- Peace signs
- Tie Dye party supplies
Terra Heck's birthday party was at a campground. She hung hippie signs on her camper. (see pic below) Don't they look groovy?
Decorate with Cut-Outs and Signs
Use decorations that represent the 60s, such as the Volkswagen hippie bus, peace signs, and daisy flowers. You can use cut-outs, tin signs, and even your birthday cake to bring the theme out in your room.
Decorate With Tie Dye Party Supplies
Use tie dye party supplies as part of your decorations. These are easy to find in your local party store or online at Amazon. Usually, you can find the plates, napkins and cups, plus decorations in one kit. This is what Terra used at her party. I love the tie dye design, it's says "hippie"!
This kit includes plates, napkins, cups, and cutlery for 8 people. This is the updated version of the kit Terra used for her party. Groovy man!

I suggest browsing Pinterest to get great ideas and find your favorite.
Love Bug Cake Topper
The VW Bug is an icon of the 60's. This is such a fun idea, and easy to do yourself. I made lots of these when I was a cake decorator for Kroger. It was one of the most popular cakes.
The Love Bug Birthday Cake
I can't tell you how many of these Love Bug birthday cakes that I made when I worked for Kroger as a cake decorator. They were one of our most popular cakes. You can buy the kit and make it yourself with no problem. We used an air gun to spray on the colors, but you can just use colored icing. Green for the grass and blue for the small pond. Just rough up the icing a little bit to make it look like water. Use a star tip (use this same tip for the border) to make the daisies. You don't have to make them exactly like you see here. You can make smaller daisies or use flower candles or sprinkles.
Note: The video below shows how to make daisies with icing and a simple star decorator tip. You can use this method for the daisies on your Love Bug cake or make a cake with just different color daisies.

A Daisy Cake
A daisy shaped cake would be perfect for a Hippie themed party. In the video below, you will see how to make your own, by using a Wilton shaped cake pan (I love these pans!) and the star decorating tip to star in the icing. You can make the icing for the petals any color you want. For a hippie party, you might like to use bright colors, like yellow and hot pink.
I made a daisy cake with this pan for a friend. It holds one box of cake mix.

Tie Dye Birthday Cake
Another great idea for a Hippie themed birthday cake is Tie Dye. It's easier than you think to make one! In the video below, you will see that even a kid can do it! This is a quick video that shows how easy it is, using a box of white cake mix, food coloring, white icing, and colorful sprinkles.

Tie Dyed Birthday Cookies
Terra chose to have tie dyed cookies at her picnic party, instead of a cake. Her mom made the sugar cookies herself, iced them with vanilla candy melt, then added a little food dye and swirled it in with toothpicks to give them a tie-dyed look. You can add colored sugar and flower candies to complete the look. This is a great idea for an outside party, since these are much easier to keep fresh and to serve.
Peace Sign Birthday Cake
I found this colorful and fun Peace Sign Birthday Cake on The Party Animal Blog. The fun part is that the inside of this cake is tie dyed! How groovy is that? The blog includes step-by-step instructions for making this cake along with lots of pictures.
Tie Dye Cookie Pops
I love these fun and unique cookie pops! They will make a groovy and yummy idea for your hippie party favors! All of your guest will love 'em!
Nicole has step-by-step directions (and lots of pictures) for making these tie dyed cookies on ThePartyAnimalBlog.org. They're so easy to do, using only refrigerated cookie dough, food coloring, and cookie pop sticks.
Birthday Cake Tip
Make your own cake. It's so much more fun!
But, if you don't, be sure and order it early!
In this article, I have given ideas for a hippie themed party, using party supplies, decorations, and the birthday cake to bring out the theme. I hope these ideas have helped you plan your party.
I'd like to thank Terra Heck for the great review she gave PartyPantry.com and for giving me permission to use the photos of her party. :)
