About the Hobbit

The Hobbit stories that are the basis of the films were written and illustrated by Tolkien for his own children and published in 1937. The Hobbit trilogy is the prequel to the Lord of the Rings.

The trilogy of Hobbit films began with the 2012 release of An Unexpected Journey. The Desolation of Smaug followed on the 13th of December, 2013, with the third and final of the Hobbit stories, There and Back Again, released in 2014.

The leading role is played by Martin Freeman. (He also plays Watson on the BBC series, Sherlock, which also stars Benedict Cumberbatch (the voice of Smaug in the Hobbit films) in the title role.)

The Art of the Hobbit

J.R.R. Tolkien's complete artwork for The Hobbit, published in celebration of the 75th anniversary. The Hobbit as first printed had ten black-and-white pictures, two maps, and binding and dust jacket designs by its author. Later, Tolkien also painted five scenes for color plates, which comprise some of his best work. His illustrations for The Hobbit add an extra dimension to that remarkable book, and have long influenced how readers imagine Bilbo Baggins and his world. Written and edited by leading Tolkien experts Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull, The Art of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien showcases the complete artwork created by the author for his story including more than one hundred illustrations.
