Homemade Loom Afghan

This is so worth the time and yarn invested. Knit in one piece, so it's very stretchy.

Lion Brand Homespun Yarn (185 yds per skein) Amount needed (12) Skeins includes (2) skeins used for fringe.

Approximate Finished Size:

44" wide X 70" long or 8' with fringe.

28" Knitting Board set at mid spacing of 1" with 4" bolts.

Knit hook and crochet hook. Gauge is 2.3 sts=1" 2.5 rows=1"

Cast On 84 Stitches (full 28" board) Place anchor yarn. (contrasting color, thick yarn.)

Work entire afghan in Stockinette Stitch for a total of 200 rows or until afghan is the size you want. Be sure to save (2) skeins of yarn for the fringe.

Bind Off very loosely:

Start at end opposite the yarn attachment. With crochet hook, lift (2) loops alternating from one board to the other. Pull the loop closest to hook thru the other loop. Pick up one additional loop from opposite board. Pull (1) loop thru the other on crochet hook. Continue this across the board until only one loop remains. Pull yarn tail thru last loop for a knot. The yarn tail will be worked into the fringe.

Do same Bind Off at anchor yarn starting at end opposite the yarn tail.

Prepare the fringe from (2) skeins of yarn. Wrap yarn around a box or trash can that measures approximately 24" around. Wrap entire skein of yarn. Cut, so that you have strands approximately 24" long. Place piece of tape around one end of strands. You can pull from it as you work the fringe.

Each fringe is (2) strands of yarn. Place crochet hook into edge stitch at one end. Fold (2) strands so that they are not even. Fold in half and with crochet hook, pull the folded loops thru the edge stitch on knitting. Pull the strands of yarn (4 once folded) thru the loop. This will knot the fringe onto the afghan. Insert the crochet hook into next edge stitch. Proceed across the end of afghan for about 1/3 of the edge. Move to opposite edge and work back to meet the other completed fringe. The result will be extremely thick and luxurious. Work opposite end of afghan with 2nd skein of yarn.

Knifty Knitter Shawl Xmas Idea

  • Knifty Knitter X-large Round Loom (yellow)

  • Knifty Knitter Pom-Pom Maker

  • Loom hook

  • Yarn needle

  • 2 skeins of Lion Brand Yarn - Color Waves (Mai Tai)

  • 2 skeins of Lion Brand Yarn - Micro Spun (Mocha)

Step 1: Hold one strand of each yarn together (treating them as one strand) to knit project.

Step 2: Using the yellow Long Loom, wrap every other peg until you have gone all the way around the loom. You will be knitting on these pegs for the entire project.

Step 3: Put the second row of stitches on and knit to the end. Wind the yarn back 3 stitches and knit these (this will hold the yarn so it does not come undone). Now take the turning peg loop and put it on the peg next to the end peg. Knit the bottom loop over it. This is the decrease stitch. Note: The pattern is knit in a slant by decreasing on one side and adding a stitch on the other side.

Step 4: Wrap the rest of the row. When you have returned to the beginning end, wrap the last stitch and skip the next peg. Turn around the peg that was deleted at the first of the row. This is the increase stitch.

Step 5: Continue knitting, decreasing on the one end and increasing on the other, for 45 rows. Place a marker here on both ends. You can use knitting stitch markers or safety pins, or tie a piece of contrasting yarn.

Step 6: Knit even on the stitches for 22 rows. Put markers on both of these ends.

Step 7: Starting on row 23, knit the first 3 stitches and decrease the first stitch. Knit to the end of this row, and wrap and add onto the peg that you decreased off at the beginning of row. Continue knitting, increasing and decreasing, for 45 rows.

Step 8: Take the project from the loom by using a crochet hook and single crocheting the loops from the pegs.

Step 9: Make 6 tassels using the Pom-Pom Maker. Place the pegs in the two holes that are the farthest apart. Wrap the pegs 20 times using the Micro Spun yarn. Tie the tassel and sew to the 6 x marks on the diagram.

Step 10: Throw over your shoulder and have a great Christmas present for cheap!

Homemade Christmas Jar Candle

...Perfect Gift Idea - Gift in a Jar

What you'll need:

  • jar and lid for the candle
  • wick material (available at craft stores)
  • new wax from a craft store
  • scissors
  • pencil
  • Bamboo skewer (or something else you don't mind getting covered in wax)
  • oil for scent (I used food grade almond oil)
  • sauce pan
  • old jar or can to melt the wax

1. Melt the wax using a double boiler. I used old candles that were either half melted or in a style I didn't like. Place the wax in an old jar or can and set in a sauce pan. Fill the sauce pan with water and bring to a boil. Stir the wax as it melts using a bamboo skewer.

2. Once the wax is melted, add your scent and stir with the skewer. Be sure to use an oil based scent not a water based scent so it will mix will the wax. I used a few drops of almont oil, though next time would add more to make it smell stronger.

3. Carefully pour the wax into your candle jar using a hot pad or oven mitt.

4. Immediately place the wick material in the wax and position it by wrapping around a pencil. Let wax harden overnight. Cut the wick down to a few centimeters above the wax.

Enjoy or give as a handmade gift or keep for yourself!

Best Christmas Present Ever!

What was the best present you ever got?
