How To Dress Like Penelope
Chic and Pretty
Anyone who has seen the movie Penelope starring Christina Ricci as Penelope Wilhern the sweetheart blue blood woman who is cursed with the face of a pig, until someone of her own kind will love her faithfully. She is a shut in and as one I get the feeling she makes much of her clothes. She has the European boutique layered look that is just darling.
I've been dressing like the character Penelope for years, long before the movie was released anyway, except she is a bit more chic. Dressing in this way is not just for Halloween, this modest modern style is pretty, famine and even comfortable. I will show you how to get this unique and chic style for yourself.
I think that many of you have items like what she has and it can be a quick and easy costume for Halloween. The one year I went as her, all I had to do is find my old pig nose. This year I made a big fancy mask and I am going as Penelope, going as Red Ridding Hood to a Costume Party.
This drawing is one of my own.
I don't want to give you one simple look, so I'm giving you five looks. I'm going to give some complete outfits and go step by step into creating her main look, which is her in a pretty dress, under a trench coat. She also wore blue polka dotted stockings and vintage green high heels and a very cute scarf wrapped around her pig nose.
In this they changed the color of her vibrant green shoes to blue.
Blue Dress Up
If you want to look pretty, while wearing the nose of a pig like Christina Ricci does in this role, you should wear a pretty, chic, classic and fun dress under your jacket or trench coat like this dresses. knee length or a tad longer would work just a bit better.
Pair this polka dot tights or leggings and 1940s style strappy heals. Irregular Choice shoes have some of the same style shoes, except they are paired with dramatic bows and flowers.
Don't Watch It
Don't watch if you haven't seen the movie, this music video is basically the entire movie in only a few minutes, it is also a very good song. It also showcases all of the outfits I have featured, plus a few more.
The feature song "outside your window" by Kessler does not actually go to the movie. However this song that came out two years after the movie was released goes along with the movie and clips shown seamlessly.
I love this music video, and song is perfect for the movie, even though this song has nothing to do with the original movie. But the video creator knew that this movie and music would be the best pairing.
Penelope wore something much like this while arguing with her mother, telling her that she doesn't want to meet another blood blue boy, but Max might change her mind about love. I love this top, the skirt is sexy and modest, the stockings are cute and the shoes are just plain sexy.
I love this 11 dollar top so much, I bought my own from Amazon. The shirt runs a little big.
Before A Wedding
This is in a style that is much like the wedding dress that Penelope wore in the movie, that can be seen in the trailer of the movie. Her big day was truly magical.
There is one more thing that you should remember about recreating her look. Penelope add buttons to her tops, flowers and jewels. She also changed all of buttons on her trench coat, they didn't match, but they went very well together.
By the end of the film she is wearing store bought clothes, they are less odd, but still as chic as before.
This movie is now well over 10 years old, coming out on DVD the day before my birthday, 2006, it arrived from Netflix on DVD, the day before my birthday, the day it was released, but I refused to watch it, until my birthday because I knew I was going to love it. And I still love it to this day.
Another look you could consider. Penelope's mother thought about running away to France. This is what, she thought Penelope might wear. A red Beret, long black sleeved shirt, black knee length skirt, patterned leggings or stockings and cute classic red high heel shoes.
