How to Throw a Saturday Night Fever Party

Updated on September 14, 2014

Disco Party

Saturday Night Fever disco party ideas including music, decorating ideas, food and activities.

John Travolta became the king of the disco floor when this movie blockbuster hit the screens.

The Bee Gees became the band associated with disco and young people became a party of a whole new dance craze.

Enjoy some music while you're here and learn how to do a line dance, while you check out costumes. You'll find lots of ideas to put together a great disco party.

Start with invitations. I don't know of any invitations that have images of this movie, but you could always find some pictures online and make your own.

Now, let's move on to some decorating ideas. If possible, a disco ball is a must! This will really help create the feeling of being in a disco back in the 1970s.

Have some old 45s lying around? You could hang them from the ceiling. You might look into purchasing a poster of the movie as well. Music was huge in this movie, so you could opt for music note decorations.

Want to have dancing, but don't a floor to dance on? You can always rent one. Keep in mind that those wild dance moves took place in a disco, (aka bar,) so might do additional decorations accordingly and keep in mind not to have the party location too bright.

As far as food goes, I would recommend a variety of horderves including cheese fondue, cocktail weenies, mini meatballs and veggie platter with Ranch dressing. Don't forget the chips and dip!

Saturday Night Fever Costumes

A fun idea is to have guests come dressed in disco attire. For guys, leisure suits were quite popular. They should have their shirts opened up a bit showing part of their chests and then accessorize with gold chains.

For gals, think wrap around skirts, halter jumpsuits and platform shoes. Oh, and don't forget the glitter. Hair was big back in those days, so think fluffy hairstyles.

A fun activity could be to have a costume contest. You can have a prize for the best male and female costume.

Disco Party Music

If you're throwing a Saturday Night Fever party, then of course you'll need the soundtrack from the movie. Party goers will surely love to dance to hits like Night Fever, You Should be Dancing and Boogie Shoes.

Of course, most likely you will some additional music. Here are some additional suggestions:

  • I Will Survive
  • YMCA
  • Le Freak
  • That's the Way I Like It
  • Celebration
  • Hot Stuff
  • Last Dance
  • Don't Leave Me this Way
  • Turn the Beat Around
  • Boogie Oogie Oogie

Of course there are many others, but these should get you started. If you don't want to go through the hassle of getting a bunch of different music, but still want more tunes, I would recommend a greatest hits album by K C and the Sunshine Band. They had a slew of hits during the disco days and their music is fun to dance to. (Also one of my personal favorite bands from that music genre.)

On the top of the list is dancing and it would be fun to have a dance contest. Let people show off their best disco moves.

Speaking of dancing, how about learning the famous line dance to Night Fever and teaching it to your guests? I went on YouTube and found an instructional video for you. I have it below for you.

Will there be many fans of the movie attending? If so, play a trivia game. Prepare a list of questions about the movie and the person who answers the most questions correctly wins. If you want to give out prizes, you could give the winner a cd of the movie's soundtrack.

I loved disco when I was younger, in fact, In my early 20s I worked in a disco, the largest in Scotland at that time, as a barman. It was all there - the glitter ball, the flashing strobe lights, the girls dressed as Stephanie look-a-likes and all the guys practicing their disco moves - brilliant fun. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
