Halloween Party Ideas

How to Have a Family Focused Halloween Party

It's almost here - Halloween! Why not plan a family friendly Halloween party that everyone can enjoy! I will take you through top to bottom how I am planning a Halloween family friendly party - from decorations, food, drink, music, costumes, and games. It is all here to give you ideas and maybe inspire you to host your own family friendly Halloween Party!

Halloween Decorations

There are a couple of themes I want to follow when I am creating a family friendly Halloween event. I want it to be cheap and not too scary! I remember being a kid and being scared of just about everything!

One of the things I'm going to use to decorate is crepe paper. It's cheap and easy to find and you can do a lot with it. You can hang it from the ceiling, twist it around the room, lay pieces of it on the table to create table decorations! You could add confetti to your table top to complete your table decoration.

Gauzy Ghosts: You can create guazy ghosts cheap! You need, cheesecloth, liquid starch, and something to drape the cheesecloth over to create the shape. FamilyFun has the directions for this cool table decoration. I have included the link below.

Another dual purpose table decoration is to take lollipops (like blo-pops or tootsie roll pops) cover them with tissue paper (white for a ghost or orange for a pumpkin). Create a face on the tissue paper and stick the lollipops into a vase or Styrofoam and you have a centerpiece that the attendees can take home with them!

At this time of year you can find a lot of orange and purple lights to hang around the room to create a magical glow.

Halloween Food

With food we really need to keep is simple (and cheap) because kids are picky eaters! Spaghetti and meatballs is a great food to serve for Halloween. Spaghetti is quick and cheap to make and you can call them "brains". Meatballs can be bought already made and ready to cook and you can all them "eyeballs"!

I found two great recipes at FamilyFun.com that I will be trying for my party: Monster Toes uses cocktail wieners and tortillas and of course a little ketchup! Bat Chips also uses flour tortilla and cookie cutters in Halloween shapes. Those should be really fun!

Halloween Drinks

For family friendly Halloween party, drinks are super simple and cheap to do. Mix up some grape and orange unsweetened powdered drink mix with the appropriate amounts of water add some ginger ale and you've got black Halloween punch.

You can add a floating frozen hand to your punch bowl. Take a clear plastic glove (wash it with warm soapy water throughly) add you favorite drink (sugar-free liquid freezes better) and place in a freezer. Directions for this are available on Halloweenishere.com.

You can also add dry ice around your punch bowl (be careful to keep the children away from dry ice) to create a spooky effect. Or you could put glow sticks under an elevated punch bowl to create a spooky effect.

Halloween Costumes

We are encouraging everyone in the family to dress up in costumes for our party. I believe that adults can enjoy dressing up just as much as the kids can. It can be a way that the family dresses as a "theme" or everyone does their own thing! You could have a costume contest by age groups, just make sure that in the end there is something for everyone!

Halloween Music

Halloween music can range from ultra scary to just plain silly. For our party, we will be sticking to the silly songs - Purple People Eater, Monster Mash, Spiders and Snakes, etc. You can buy CD's with Halloween music or you can create your own unique CD.

Halloween Games

I am going to keep the games simple and cheap! I don't know the exact age of everyone attending (we could have anywhere from 3 yrs - 16yrs) so we will need to keep our games simple but fun for everyone in the family.

One game that we will do will be the Mummy Wrap. Every family will be given a roll of TP (not the 1000 sheet kind, something cheap!). They are to take the roll of TP and wrap one member of the family - mummy style. You could add some variations that they then have to "walk" across a finish line and the first family to complete wins.

Another game involves using 2 liter bottles (empty, but filled with sand or rocks for weight) painted white. You will need 10 of them and a small ball. Set the bottles up bowling style and bowl over the "ghosts".

A variation on musical chairs (which can be dangerous if the children get aggressive!) is to have the children sit down in a circle and pass pumpkins around while the music plays. There is one less pumpkin than children, so the child that doesn't have a pumpkin when the music stops is out.

The mummy wrap sounds fun! We used to bob for apples...nobody cared about germs back then, I guess! Your ideas sound much better, though.

There are some really great ideas here for childrens parties! It looks like it could be a lot more fun for the adults also since there won't be as much headache without frightened children. Love it!
