"Igor is a lighthearted and kid friendly movie in the style of The Nightmare before Christmas, the movie sits somewhere between the G and PG rating."

-- Michael, It's Childsplay Blog

Igor's Story And A Discussion of Some Of the Other Characters In the Movie

Igor the movie was released in North American movie markets on September 19th, 2008 and is rated PG for some thematic elements, scary images, action and mild language and the reviews I have read that is not appopriate for young children, not because it is scary but rather because it has some inappropriate content. It runs for 1 hour and 26 minutes.

Are you somebody or nobody? In Malaria, where Igor takes place, there are important evil scientists and there are unimportant hunchbacked assistants.

Meet Igor, an unusual inventor who sets out to prove himself at the annual Evil Science Fair. He enlists the help of two friends -- Scamper (a rabbit from the lab) and Brain (who actually is not all that brainy.) His plan? To create the greatest invention (better than anything that has been done before) and take the top prize.

Of course, someone has to get in the way. Enter Dr. Schadenfreude. His plan? To steal Igor's invention and conquer Malaria. Naturally, it will be up to Igor and his friends to stop him.

A funny, animated story of unlikely heroes! Looking for a Halloween movie to watch with your family? This one is going to be fun and perfectly timed for Halloween viewing this year!

Igor Characters

Igor - Gifted and brilliant born hunchbacked in Malaria and, therefore, forced to become an Igor. Igor creates his best creation - an evil monster but unfortunately the monster does not want to be evil! She actually wants to act! Igor's voice was supplied by John Cusack.

Scamper - is a 'road kill' rabbit that Igor restored to life giving him both super-intelligence and immortality but Scamper doesn't want to live! Scamper's voice was provided by Steve Buscemi.

Brain - was also invented by Igor. He is a 'brain-in-a-jar' that is not quite all there -- he wants to help but isn't quite able to. His voice was supplied by Sean Hayes.

Eva - built by Igor as his entry into the Evil Science fair, she isn't, unfortunately, evil and she actually wants to be an acress. Voice supplied by Molly Shannon.

Jaclyn - is Dr. Schadenfreude's hot girlfriend who wants to get to Evil Street and isn't against using her beguiling ways to steal inventions. She is both confidante and thorn to Dr. Schadenfreude. Voice supplied by Jennifer Coolidge.

Dr. Glickenstein is a cruel and evil scientist and is Igor's master. Naturally, he treats Igor very poorly. When he finds out that Igor has been making his own inventions, he is less than pleased! Dr. Glickenstein voice is provided by John Cleese. Voice provided by John Cleese.

King Malbert is the King of Malaria and is both just and wise or maybe then again he isn't. He pretends to be your friend and to care but he doesn't. This politician doesn't always tell the truth. Jay Leno provides King Malbert's voice. Voice supplied by Jay Leno.

Dr. Schadenfreude is Malaria’s top evil scientist and has won at the Annual Evil Science Fair the last 17 times. However, he really is not responsible for his inventions and every one that has won him the prize was stolen. Dr. Schadenfreude's voice is provided by Eddie Izzard. Voice provided by Eddie Izzard.

Igor Movie Reviews

"If you're looking for something to appease both sexes, Igor has both action for the man, and romance for the lady." - Student Impact Blog

"Loved this film. What a great ensemble cast. I loved everyone! Steve Buscemi did a great job as a suicidal rabbit and had great chemistry with the "slow" Brain (Sean Hayes). John Cusack was as adorable as ever. Eddie Izzard was a hoot and Arsenio Hall was HILARIOUS! Welcome back Arsenio. Jennifer Coolidge is a favorite of mine and she did a great job with her characters. Go see it. It is a really nice surprise. Oh, and great music." - Movie Reviewed by abbybi

"If you like your humor on the crispy side, you'll probably enjoy this quick zing of animated spunk. Full of pitch-black jokes, it's sort of like The Nightmare Before Christmas's quirkier, less popular baby brother." - B. Alan Orange

Igor Was Written By Chris McKenna

Who used his love of Frankenstein to create this movie.

Traditionally, Igor (sometimes spelled Ygor) refers to a hunch-backed assistant or butler to a villain like Dracula or a mad scientist. We are perhaps most familiar with Igor from Frankenstein and Van Helsing.

It was from Frankenstein that Chris McKenna took his inspiration for Igor. He decided to turn things around with the hunchbacked lab assistant the brilliant one and a fake evil genius.

Igor the Movie Credits

Voices include John Cusack, Steve Buscemi, John Cleese, Jennifer Coolidge, Arsenio Hall, Sean Hayes, Eddie Izzard, Jay Leno, James Lipton, Molly Shannon and Christian Slater. Directed by Tony Leondis of Lilo & Stitch 2 fame and written by Chris McKenna of American Dad fame. Produced by Exodus Film Group CEO John D. Eraklis and president Max Howard of Lion King, Aladdin, Space Jam and the Iron Giant Fame.

The Movie Mom Gives Igor The Movie A Nice Big 'B'

The Movie Mom gives this movie a B and recommends it (and this is the important part) for children in grades four to six. It is rated PG for some thematic elements, scary images, action and mild language. The Movie Mom goes further to explain the elements as follows.

In terms of profanity, she says there is mild schoolyard language. In terms of nudity and or sexual elements, there are some kisses and some manipulatively seductive behavior. There is no drug or alcohol content. Finally, in terms of violence and scariness, she says that there is "macabre humor involving evil scientists, 'comic' suicide attempts by immortal character and humorous but scary and grotesque images."

I think her review sounds good, although I have yet to see the movie. She goes a little further to explain the situations that many other reviewers have only eluded to. If you are a parent often looking for movie advice, consider using the Movie Mom's reviews.

The Movie Mom always recommends discussion points from every movie she recommends. In this case, she suggests:

Why did these characters want to be evil?

Why did Eva want to be an actress?

Do you think everyone has a 'bad bone?'

Talk about what the name Schadenfreude means.

She also always recommends other movies that you and your family will enjoy if you like this one. In this case, she recommends 'Sky High,' 'The Nightmare Before Christmas,' 'Monster House,' and 'Shrek'

If you are a parent and you are looking to read an excellent review, I highly recommend the Movie Mom's. Find her reviews at The Movie Mom and her Igor review at Movie Mom's Igor Review .

Is Igor Too Funny To Be Scary?

Igor is a comedy filmed in the horror genre. The creators, Chris Mckenna and Tony Leondis struggled to keep the balance at times they found that they had too much comedy and other times too much horror. This movie was fun to make and is a "a conventional scary movie with comedic elements."

To view the exclusive interview, visit We Ask Tony Leondis and Chris McKenna: Is Igor Too Funny To Be Scary.

Comedy Movie? Horror Movie? Campy Movie?

Hmmm...what exactly is this movie? A Comedy? A horror? A campy movie? (Campy being definted as deliberately outrageous.) A few other movies that can be called both comic and horror themed are Frankenweenie, Nightmare Before Christmas, The Corpse Bride, Edward Scissorhands, Sweeney Todd, Shaun of the Dead, Rocky Horror Picture Show and so on. Have you seen this movie? What do you think would you call it a horror, a comedy or a campy movie?

This is a great movie. We all loved it. We have watched it again and caught funny things we missed the first time around. Not too scary for small children, not really scary at all. Highly recommended. We are disappointed that there are no toys, my daughter would love them.

It looks like a cute movie and you did a great job on the lens. Since I retired from the school system, I don't get to see all the neat kid movies until they come on TV!

We enjoyed the movie, it's definitely one that can be enjoyed on several levels. Perhaps a little scary for very young children though, but lots of satire and nods to horror films and recent big box office animated movies - but these can only be appreciated if you've seen the other films, of course. Politically minded adults might, as I did, see it as a comedic allegory: a country called Malaria, climate change, a ruler who aimed to keep his subjects under control through fear, a down-trodden working class, known as Igors....(remind you of anywhere?) It's zany and funny, in a darkish kind of way, not in the same league as other recent animations but still very enjoyable. The cast did an excellent job, especially Steve Buscemi, as Scamper, I thought. The movie is visually interesting, musically quirky and eclectic. Great information here, by the way Brenda - everything anyone needs to know about Igor!
